We leave from Avigliana to visit the Sacra di San Michele. Avigliana is an Italian municipality of 12,284 inhabitants in the metropolitan city of Turin in Piedmont, and is located about twenty kilometers west of the Piedmontese capital, Turin. The municipality is located in a morainic amphitheater between Mount Pirchiriano, on which the Sacra di San Michele stands, and the Rivoli hill, in the final part of the Val di Susa. It is one of the most populated municipalities, together with Alpignano, and economically important in the entire Val di Susa. In Avigliana there are 2 lakes, the small lake and the large lake and they are of glacial origin, dating back to 120,000 years ago.
The Sacra di San Michele, or more properly the Abbey of San Michele della Chiusa del Piedmont, is an architectural complex perched on the summit of Mount Pirchiriano, at the entrance to the Val di Susa, in the metropolitan city of Turin, in Piedmont, in the territories of the municipalities of Sant'Ambrogio of Turin and of Chiusa di San Michele,
The Sacra di San Michele is the symbolic monument of Piedmont
The Sacra di San Michele can be reached on foot via two main routes: the first connects it to the town of Chiusa di San Michele, the other connects it to the town of Sant'Ambrogio via a wide mule track with stations of the Via Crucis : in both cases, the difference in altitude is approximately 600 m, with the mule tracks departing from the parish churches of the two respective villages.
There is, then, a third alternative, still hiking, but with a lower altitude difference: the Sentiero dei Principi starting from the Mortera village of Avigliana (630 m). This itinerary passes at the top of Punta dell'Ancoccia (896 m), a suggestive balcony over the Sacra and Bassa Valle, and then descends back to Colle della Croce Nera (872 m).
For mountaineering enthusiasts, the complex can also be reached via the Carlo Giorda via ferrata which starts from Sant'Ambrogio di Torino at the foot of Mount Pirchiriano.
The Abbey of San Michele is located on the sacred line of San Michele, which runs from Ireland to the Holy Land, and was traced, according to legend, by the sword blow that the Saint inflicted on the Devil to send him back to hell.
