We test our stark arrestor designs in the dark, and found that adding a solid plate on the top really helped the effectiveness. This stops the forced embers in the exhaust from being pushed thru the 1/8" metal mesh.

Something like a bird whistle. the valve was on the cab floor, with a trap below leading to the whistle. Water would collect in the pipe from the boiler to the valve, then be blown into the trap to gurgilate when I pushed the lever!

When I join this club, I'm gonna drive either a 4-8-4 Northern, a 4-6-4 Hudson, a Pacific Type 4-6-2, a Mountain Type 4-8-2, a Berkshire 2-8-4, or a 2-8-2 Mikado.

No, it was done off the plans for the Ken Schroeder Shay with the pull reversed to fit under the cab roof.

It sounded horrible until the valve was replaced. Much better now! :-)
