In the LA city schools in junior high print shop, we were taught to use the California Job Case to set type by hand just as he's doing. We also had a Linotype machine for larger jobs. They would have a sh**t hemorrhage if one of those were in a shop class today. It had a cauldron of molten lead that fed the machine to form type as you typed out the print you wanted. It would then be wiped clean and fed back into the cauldron for re-use.

The difference between typesetting and typing is that characters on stamp blocks are set in type, and typing requires tapping the keys on a typewriter, microcomputer, word processor, etc.

Am i understanding they needed to get letters for each sentance of a story. They had to use like 1000s of letters for each article? Must have taken them days to set up one story.
