I agree entirely with you, far too often people are talking about general stuff before and after and even during the mass. They wouldn't dare talk as loud in a library but they treat God's house like a community centre

Spot on Fr. I have been going to the the Traditional Mass for the last 20 years. This morning l had to go to a family funeral. I was heartbroken for our dear Saviour. The babble, the sacrilegious communions by family members l know are not living the way the Church demands. The one chance these people had to hear about the 4 last things was lost. Instead it was a virtual canonisation. God help us all. Keep doing what your doing Fr.

100% correct Fr. I think you need to send this to your fellow priests and the bishops who permitted Nathan Carter and band to invade the sanctuary of churches in Lisnaskea, Cooley and Cootehilll over the weekend. Desecration of the holy of holies. May God forgive them.

Thank you Fr. There are churches that I won't go to for Mass because of what you say. The people don't even lower their voices when correcting the children, they chastise them in full voice even at the consecration. Thank you Fr for speaking out on this subject and what we need now is the celebrating priest speaking out before he begins Mass and after Mass if necessary.

Thank you Fr. Brendan. I agree with every word. Unfortunately there are too many priests who have forgotten they step on Holy Ground when they enter a Church. If they do not respect this Sacred Space - God's House how can they expect the laity to do so. All too often Churches are treated as market places and the One whose house it is, is totally ignored. We cannot blame the younger folk or the children, the few that actually attend, if we, the older folk, do not respect His House.

Thank you Father Brendan! I have lost count of the times that when Mass was over, I was quietly saying a few prayers to Our Lord and Our Lady when "Aunt Blabby" would come on over and start talking to some old hen behind me in a loud voice about her latest gallstone operation! For some reason, Aunt Blabby has multiple gallstones and here, I thought you only could have your gallbladder removed once every life time. Maybe hers grows back! God love you, from Texas!

Went to trad Latin mass at the sacred heart in limk, Icksp, Sunday 6pm mass 2 Sundays ago, was saying my Thanksgiving prayers after mass, I was toward the back of the church and up at the front two women were engaged in animated conversation. It so upset me as I didn't expect to see this kind of disrespect for OurLord at a traditional mass. There are signs as you enter the church requesting silence. I left my seat and walked up to them, genuflected before the altar and quietly said "shame on you for for talking in the presence of Jesus in the Holy Tabernacle" one of the women was furious with me and followed me down the aisle, called me holier than Thou, a busybody and a hypocrite. Now I might be all of those things but the icing on the cake was, "Jesus wouldn't mind!!!" the problem here is people leaving the novos ordo and bringing their bad habits and ignorance of the Faith with them

I as a child was awed into silence by interaction of dark and light of the Hiberno-Romanesque style of parish church I attended, it was a place that fascinated and enthralled you into awareness of another worId beyond what I could see and touch. In that place, I knew instinctively that Eternity was real and awesome. Like entering New Grange, you naturally became still, you were confronted by and brought to contemplate another reality. It was a Holy Place! Now I love acting and directing, and a lot of my effort is to produce the appropriate atmosphere for the action (words, deeds, pauses, light and darkness) of the play. I have to know how to leave an audience spellbound. A church should be spellbinding in it form and structure. Since that high jacking of Vat II by well-meaning ideas with regard to Church design. We have designed discussion chambers, not places of wonder and reverence. So that is what happens now! Lastly I am a Sagart, that means I am called to be Holy. Called to be in this world but to belong to the next world, to leading in worship/adoration by my presence in thought, action and stillness. I am (God Help Me) called to be a living sign of the Eternal! A lover of God and his people, shepherding them to the Eternal. I am in this world but living for my Master in Eternity. That is the whole meaning of my person. The Sacrament of Priesthood has changed me utterly and conferred a different character on my existence, and I am growing into that new reality. Pray for me!

I attend latin Mass when I can. There's not a whisper before during of at any time in the church. That's how it used to be. We would get a clout if we talked or laughed even when we were children, probably especially as children. That's the formative time. I never forgot and don't as far as is possible, engage with neighbours in church., only when a comment is addressed to me I feel obliged to reply but I won't in future.

I attend a trad parish with TLM, where we participate in sacred silence; mind you, I consider wailing babies honorary participants in sacred silence. When NO churches were closed during covid, we could have NO parishioners come in to grab holy water & stay for the Mass. I was amazed at how these women - it was never men - could keep up constant conversation for >90 minutes. What subject is so enthralling that you can go on about it without stopping for a breath for 90 minutes? It was like the song of the humpback whale - a single utterance that lasts for hours. And people wonder why traddies are mean! We weren’t born mean; by jingo, things like chatter for the entire duration of the Holy Sacrifice have turned us mean.

Any thoughts on the recent pastoral letter from the archbishop of Tuam?. ‘In some parishes, when the priest is unavoidably absent during the week, parishioners hold a prayer service in their church; this may need to be extended to weekends where necessary’. The prospect of Bishops encouraging people to go to prayer services instead of mass in another town is very disheartening

Absolutely Fr Brendan . But worse than that is the talking after Mass. The Tabernacle is just closed and the Priest not off the alter yet, the clapping and talking starts. You have no chance if you want to say a few prayers in thanksgiving. They are all over you, and quite oblivious of what is going on. I have written to our Priest about this, but nothing has been said or done. In Medjugore, the worst offenders are the English speaking people. The nun asking for silence is ignored completely. Until there is acknowledgement of the true presence, there will be no silence. This includes Ministers of the Eucharist. Its no wonder then, that people will travel miles to a Traditional Mass. This is the Mass that will once again grow in numbers, while others are losing their faith. One comes out feeling incomplete and unfortunately a bit angry. The days of discipline in all walks of life has ended, and we have nothing but chaos. God bless you Fr for being brave enough to stand and talk about the truth, it can only come from the pulpit, but unfortunately we are sheep without shepherds.

In our small church in the French Pyrenees the elderly not only talk loudly before mass but sometimes stand up, walk out (to buy their baguette etc...) then come back in again ! I'd like our priest to address this but I think he's afraid of using his already small flock.

This is the problem, namely that the clergy do not want to run the risk of losing more Laity, if they criticise disrespectful behaviour. If the congregation however don't like being told to behave, then who's fault is that? The point here is that the Church building is God's house. Therefore we, the congregation, are required to behave in a way that is reverential to God. I fully understand that attending Mass is also a chance for people who maybe housebound all week, to meet and converse with other people. That's understandable but the same people need to understand that entering a church building is entering God's domain. In the synagogue, there was a section of the building called "the Holy of Holies".

Yes. Totally agree with everything said. We’ve had such poor catechesis for the past 60 years. Please, all you good and holy priests, catechize from your pulpits at Mass. Just a little instruction each Mass will be a great help.
@seamusweber82982 жыл бұрын
Excellent content, Father. I noted the same behaviour in the local church. Talking loudly, chattering away without any concern whatsoever. Unfortunately. As I understand it, the Church is where God is, and its God's House and therefore we, the congregation, need to be respectful in our behaviour toward Him.
@bernadineperry83402 жыл бұрын
Yes Father I agree wholeheartedly. Impossible to assist at mass it's become the norm for some people to talk loudly sometimes throughout mass. It's so disrespectful to the priest the members of the congregation and especially to God Almighty. It's so STUPID.
