I agree with Dr Owen that some religious artwork misrepresents Jesus, giving him a rather un masculine appearance. I think it was a tendency to try to convey something of his gentleness, but that is not properly represented by making our Lord look rather feminine. I have a representation of the Sacred Heart, which has always disconcerted me because of its overly feminine face. Obviously, sacred images all have their limitations and try to emphasize some qualities over others. They are only symbolic representations. But, yes, let the faces be more masculine.

anselman Perhaps the reasons is LOVE...you see when one marries a person their LOVE for each other make ONENESS of HEART shines in their faces...it's always been the obvious proof of LOVE...when you look like each other eventhough from the start it seems to be not. This will all happen to us too..as we imitate the Life of Jesus, the Christ like image will be imprinted on our face.Our Face become the Face of Jesus to our brethren. But for me...the most powerful to imitate is Mary... Why? Satan cannot look or even glimpse at the Face of Mary...see Fr.Bamonte the Exorcist Leader well documented accounts on Exorcism...when Fr.Bamonte ask the demons to look at the Blessed Image of Mary they cannot look, they are terrified, they are blinded... If we LOVE Mama Mary too much, the demons will saw the likeness of our thoughts,words & actions to Mary. That's why. Fr. Amorth the Chief Exorcist said the famous phrase; "Anyone who goes to Mary and pray the rosary cannot be touch by satan" Mary is the Spouse of the Holy Spirit their mystical union cannot be describe and since Jesus is cosubstantial with the Holy Spirit the image of Mary in Jesus as attributed to the Holy Spirit will be reflected on the image of Jesus. Jong Ricafort. We should not rely too much on religious art, and it must be subject to criticism on theological grounds. Whilst it may happen that faces take on new appearances and can reflect likenesses, it remains true that God always maintains a distinction between male and female. When Mother Eve was fashioned from Father Adam, she was a distinctly feminine likeness of her spouse. That is God's eternal order-male and female, alike but distinctly different. It would not be legitimate to take an icon of the Blessed Virgin and paint a beard onto it and call it the Lord Jesus. As I said, all art is symbolic, and it must always be careful not to convey a false idea.
