How can gnats to that much damage? I know hoardes of mosquitos in northern Alaska can suck a quart of blood out of a moose in a day, but gnats are much smaller. I don't know that gnats also suck blood. Unless they are more like a flying flea?

The circle of life can be both beautiful and devastating at the same time. To think that tiny little insects are capable of taking down two little eaglets. Who would've thought? What a shame!! I feel for mom, too. Those bugs appear to be driving her a bit mad, too. All that head shaking must be quite bothersome. Yup, the circle of life can be so cruel. Last year I saw an eagle nest that was fumigated due to gnats in prior season. They went up to sturdy the nest and also cleaned and fumigated it, pre-season. IMHO this should happen here as well. Especially since the gnats were such a problem last year and this this year. The idea can be researched and implemented.

@Judy, I understand the pain. Nature sometimes leaves some behind, i.e. the "no child left behind" philosophy is faulty and teaches kids a ruinous lesson. In the real world some people are fired because they can't do the job; they don't measure up. On the bright side there are fish and animals and birds that didn't get killed to feed the eagles.
@catserver85772 жыл бұрын
@@WJack97224 The sad truth is that invasive insects move and encroach on nature just as that other pest, humans, do. Human cause the changes these animals are experiencing. Until everyone is on board and understands how much humans affect everything, the sooner we can start to correct it. And the entire theory about human beings as worker bees here just to work for employers is just as unnatural. Be part of the solution, not part of the problem.

@tacksscherbo77714 жыл бұрын
They can suck their blood just as mosquitos do. In fact, mosquitos target all warm blooded creatures - bear, birds, deer, pets, you name it. And gnats DO bite. So do black flies. They are small bites, but nevertheless, if they open wounds, they will infest that spot, perhaps infect it and torment the hatchling. If the hatchling is tiny, as in this video, they can eventually kill it.
