I feel Ron 100% at the end. Oda wrote this part of the arc and made it resonate heavily with the male ego. As men, we often measure our sense of self-worth by how useful we are to the world and to the people we love. Usopp is not a strong combatant like the monster trio. He's not the ships doctor or navigator like Chopper and Nami. He's not even as strong as the newest edition, Robin. His only contribution, in his view, is the Going Merry. He did everything he could to maintain the Merry, but despite this, the ship was deteriorating and deteriorating quickly. If the ship is now broken and useless, and his only usefulness was tied to the ship, then what use is Usopp? They all consider the ship an essential part of the crew, but it's now lost its usefulness and is set to be abandoned. Won't the same happen to Usopp? He can't even protect money, nor retrieve it once it's been stolen. Won't the crew soon see his own uselessness once the Merry has been abandoned? It's so well and intentionally written that I never get tired rewatching this scene. Definitely one of Oda's more thoroughly considered plotlines in the series.

Not really, ussop was just being insanely irrational. I understand he was connected with the boat and all and it was a gift from his girl, but its a fucking boat ffs, an inanimate object. What is more important, this mode of transportation or this lifelong journey to find the one piece and the dream of becoming a warrior of the sea. @deat-mq5xi ussop got a point because luffy replaced the ship way too fast insteed of trying to fix it just because someone else said its destroyed. And its not about something thats not human. @@ataluscas Im not really a fan, I think its a fun watch, but its extremely overrated and the writing is not that good. I watched one piece from an objective perspective, I focused on the writing, you all focused on the bonds between yourselves and the characters. But anyway, the fairy was not a manifestation of the merry, it was explained that it was a type of creature who lives on a well treated boat. Ussop didnt have a conversation with that fairy, we didnt know what the fairy sounded like, what its traits were, or even what it looked like. How am I supposed to feel connected to something like that? Like I said, i dont think ussop shouldve fought luffy over that and dismissed his entire ideology and goals. His entire dream was to be a warrior of the sea yet he abandons it even with having a full day to think (so dont say it was just a spur of the moment).

What hits hardest about this scene is that the entire thing started over a misunderstanding, but also because insecurities and a total lack of context and perspective on both sides. A complete collapse of friendship and a brutal fight because tension was too high and communication was lost. Its absolutely heartbreaking how real this is, but theres SO MUCH MORE to the scene as well when coming back to it "after", that enhances it. Thats what makes Oda the greatest of all time.

This is one of the most defining moments of the series. It tested Luffy and his resolve as a captain, Ussopp and his honor as a warrior, Zoro as a first mate, Nami reliving through another family destruction, Sanji as a man, and Chopper realizing again on things that he may not be able to fix. It's a turning point where Oda reminded us why they are on this journey and each of us as a reader/viewer that conflicts can happen between those that are closest to us.

this is one of the scenes that really made One PIece not just one of the best manga of all time but probably one of the greatest stories of all of fiction, the quote that got me the most was when Sanji said "you pity him at a time like this you'll end up hurting him more than any of those injuries" since I remember seeing someone go through that and I completely get that, while we just want to help someone, there are times where it's best to just let the person be alone

When people say "One Piece hits different" this is what they mean. It can be such a fun and goofy show for one episode then suddenly turns into an emotional rollercoaster that hits like a truck in the next. From the first moment he ever stepped into that ship («That means I'M CAPTAIN now, right???», he half-jokingly asked back then) and was part of that crew, Usopp never took Luffy seriously as the captain of the Straw Hats. In fact, up until this arc, we barely see Luffy have to take any big leadership decisions (Zoro, as his VC/VP, usually handles things or the crew as a whole comes to a consensus) but now he has to prove to both the crew and Usopp that he is in fact THE CAPTAIN and that some redlines cannot be crossed. An arc of huge importance for the entire series.

When Ron's eyes fill with tears and he stretches and lets out a slight smile, it's because he felt the emotion of it strongly, and the reason we may never know and that's the fun of it, personal experiences with similar emotions... The coolest thing is that even though it's something touching, it becomes fun to share that experience and hear about those close to you too, something that is touching ends up becoming fun too in the end, and that's what matters, sharing it with those we love in the end.

One piece is one of the few anime/mangas out there that has a strong message of friendship but doesn't feel like some convenient trope mystical power to throw in just to give someone strength. You build up the relationship with each character throughout the series just as much as the crew so when an episode like this happens it's devastating. We've all been there. People get attached to characters they've seen for just a season or two (24-50eps). This is 230+ episodes in. It doesn't matter if you were a manga reader, weekly anime watcher, a binge watcher nor did it matter what age. This scene hurt everyone.

others have already said it, but these last few eps capture so well the way social pressures to meet certain levels of masculine expectations can end up hurting those around us, and/or backfiring into an intense sense of inadequacy. im sure it's hard becoming a doctor, a navigator, a world-class fighter, but you know what else is hard? feeling brave, like truly feeling brave in your bones. the monster-trio doesnt struggle as much with this because of their natural physical prowess, but Usopp has to dig for it day by day, and it makes him behave in such relatable ways, which is why he's my fav character in One Piece.

Usopp not just loving the ship more than the rest of the guys, but he felt the ship is weak like him so discarding the ship also felt like dicarding him in what felt to be a rushed decision to him. He had to stand up for both of them "You're just gonna use us and discard us like trash when we're at our weakest?", you don't do that while I'm here. Luffy and Usopp they were both right in this argument, but it just happened that they felt the other is clearly wrong and too proud or hurt to admit it.

@MrBigTrey

@entengkabisote150 Think about it. Just because Merry can't be fixed doesn't mean she's useless. They could've come up with something if Luffy wasn't so callous about it. SPOILER Luffy and the rest of the crew didn't regard Merry as part of the crew until Merry saved them as the cost of her own life. Franky made a mini Merry but it's just a replica. If Luffy and the rest had thought the same as Usopp I'm sure they would've incorporated Merry into the new ship. But Merry's alone at the bottom of the sea now, and that's the most heartbreaking part of this whole saga. It still bothers me me to this day. I hope in the end when the water recedes that they find Merry and bring her home.

Sanji only use his hands to cook. He stopped Luffy saying those words (and in ALL fighting scene) with his "black leg", but stopped Chopper with his bare hand. Usopp did earn Zoro's respect in this fight - Usopp seems sooooo weak and fragile all the time. However, he still dare to disobey their strongest captain for protecting Merry and did his best for the impossible winning. This scene really proves Usopp's courage and loyalty to his dearest nakama (Merry in this case).

I think what people don’t understand is this scene hits man more than women , because as friends or brothers we get to this level of misunderstanding, ego , anger and fight it out but it’s always difficult to go through this because it’s like a piece of ur chest is being crushed. Totally understanding Ron’s reaction specially if you got blood brothers

The argument between Luffy & Usopp is honestly one of the most realistic ones in all of anime imo. It perfectly shows how something like that can easily get out of hand, especially when both parties are extremely passionate about the situation. & then you have Sanji kicking Luffy and Zoro standing on business about the whole situation which are 2 of my favorite moments from them still. They trust Luffy’s decisions fully, and if Luffy starts to waver, who can they trust? So we can’t let that happen. They made sure Luffy stuck to his code. Remember, “We aren’t playing pirates.”

the thing with usopp is that hes feeling a lot of stuff right now that he cant put into words, he has to prove that his worth it after the franky house fight, he's feeling useless, but he reflected himself and feel empathy about the ship not just because the ship is all he can offer to the crew, but usopp grew so much attached into that ship that he FEELS that the ship is alive, JUST live another crewmate, he can't really separate a human being to a ship, he feels that the ship is alive and have a soul, if you remember at skypeia he was talking to the soul's ship repairing itself, so when the crew decided to abandon the ship in a place like that he felt it in himself and though they would do the same with him, he feels insecure cause all he can do is lie, he is the most human character at this show

I just want to say. Usopp fighting Luffy was Usopp at his best. It's the first fight he never shied away from, the first fight in which he intentionally took control from the start, and more importantly the first time he didn't give up control out of fear. He may have lost, but he knew he would, that isn't was this was about. He had an answer for everything Luffy did. He gave it his all through the entire fight, and that made him more powerful than ever.

Ron I feel your heart ache man, I have easily watched this episode over 30 times via reactions as well as my own watch throughs of the anime and it hits just as hard every single time man, I've never not cried watching this scene unfold. The feelings on display are insanely real and easily relatable as a man, as I think it really does a great job of conveying how fragile the male ego can be. Especially when we question our self worth in relation to a group of our peers or loved ones. And how as men it has been stereotypically shoveled down our throats to not show deeper emotions or express them, but rather to bottle them up and hide them from the world. Ussop's self worth in the SHP being tied to the Merry and his maintaining the ship being his key roll among the group, especially as he is feeling particularly low in his confidence that he has earned his place amongst his peers and that his is contributing because of his lack of physical prowess compared to the rest of the crew. One Piece is amazing in that it will consistently shake you to your core in a way that honestly only AOT ever made me feel personally.

I saw these episodes in a period of my life where I had been with my best friend, she was like my sister, but we had fights because we couldn't communicate properly, the conflicts escalated and we stopped talking after a horrible fight where both We said things to each other that hurt us, then I went into depression, I cried so much over this, it made me see the mistake I was making by leaving everything like this for my pride, for the first time in a month I spoke to her to clarify and apologize for all the What nonsense I had said to her before we separated, we solved everything with a talk, and the funny thing was when she asked me what made me talk to her again, I told her that it was about One Piece and I told her that it was more about these chapters, she told him She was so curious that she wanted to watch the anime. I suggested watching everything with her again. When we got to these chapters, it was very sad to see them together. She hugged me and we cried a lot. Now, years later, we are still up to date with both anime and manga. I owe it to her. this work so much that I can't express how much I love One Piece and how grateful I feel for everything it brought to my life

Ron, Michelle… the reason Usopp was so adamant about getting a new ship is because of Kaya, his friend from Syrup Village. As we all know Usopp loves Kaya dearly and wanted to keep his friend’s gift forever as a way of reciprocating her kindness. Throughout the Straw Hat’s adventure since getting the Going Merry, Usopp was always the one who cared for her the most out of everyone else and was more sensitive when it involved her, even reminding the others on a daily basis that it was Kaya who gave them the Merry. Moreover Usopp also sees a little bit of himself in the Merry. Merry was a ship made to traverse the East Blue, it was never properly manufactured to handle the dangerous waters of the Grand Line. Similarly all of us could see since leaving Reverse Mountain that Usopp was presently unfit to face the challenges that the Grand Line had in store, no matter how hard he tried in comparison to Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, etc he is the weakest member of the crew which lead to him with the mentality that he was only dead weight. He was gaslit himself to believe that his only meaningful contribution to the crew was getting them the Going Merry and thought that once the Merry was kaput and outlived her usefulness that the rest of the crew would just abandon him like they are doing with her now. Furthermore all this time Usopp never once acknowledged Luffy as his captain, Usopp only saw Luffy as a friend nothing more. Which is why Usopp got so confrontational with Luffy and refused to accept reality that the Going Merry couldn’t sail anymore. All of his crippling insecurities such as his stubbornness, his low self-esteem, and his inferiority complex towards the others became too much for Usopp to bear, and the Franky Family stealing the money was the final straw. All of this is what led to Usopp leaving the crew and breaking ties with Luffy and the others. Luffy accepting Usopp’s challenge and not talking things out further was because he was right, there was no turning back. Nothing he or anyone else could say would change Usopp’s mind or make him feel any less guilty about what happened. Once he departed the ship, Usopp officially left the Straw Hats. Usopp put his pride on the line for this duel even though he knew he didn’t have a chance in Hell of winning and if Luffy had refused this challenge it wouldn’t be nothing more than an insult to his friend and to his pride. Like I said, there was no going back once Usopp got off the ship the die was already cast and all that was left was to see it through to the end no matter what. That being said I hope y’all have a bit of a better understanding of Usopp’s feelings now and that everything I said made sense.
