I got married to this song. Unfortunately, 6 months later my husband passed away, he had a brain tumor. I haven heard it too much ever since, coz it still hurts so much. The lyrics gave a different meaning now, I'm so happy I met him before he died, and I know he was happy he had met me before he died too. Love you and miss you, love of my life.

The best line is "I'd rather be working for a paycheck than waiting to win the lottery." Everyone who believes in the crap about "soulmates" should keep this line in mind - there isn't one perfect person out there for you, with whom you will be forever happy with no problems. Love is hard work; it's sometimes putting your own feelings aside for the sake of the one you love, it's even (God forbid) being willing to change. Don't stick around in a toxic relationship, of course, but don't bail at the first problem. This is advice from someone who's been married since 1981.

My husband put this song on the mix CD he gave me when we first started dating. I could have been killed when a car rear-ended me on my moped a week before we started dating and he came and brought me treats and was just wonderful. When I heard the line that said, "I'm glad I didn't die before I met you" it really resonated and it became our song. I ended up walking down the aisle to an accustic guitar version and our wedding bands have, "This is the first day of my life" inscribed inside. In September, we'll have been together 10 years and going on our third wedding anniversary. Corny, I know, but I pretty much can't hear this song without tearing up, it's the main soundtrack to my life.

I think of my daughter when I hear this song. I was diagnosed with cancer when she was 2 years old and although I'm not afraid of dying as it is a part of life, I begged God to give me enough time so that she could get to know me and know what my love for her felt like. I was terrified that I would die before she had any tangible memories of me. My biggest fear was that she would know how much I loved her because other people told her and not because she knew what my love for her felt like. "I'm glad I didn't die before I met you." I'm so glad I didn't die before she got to know me. It's been 13 years now, I'm cancer free! We have the best relationship and I'm so grateful for every single day that i get to spend with her. Myabella, if you ever stumble across this comment always remember, i love you the most most ♥️

Me and my dog listened to this as we drove 259 miles back from the farm I picked him up from when he was 2 months old. He is 14 now and all the time that has passed makes this song more relevant to our lives together. I listen to this with him snuggled next to me and I think about how much I owe him for the blind trust he gave me. We have a lifetime of memories together and this song will always be a reminder of where those memories started.

My first bf attempted suicide shortly before we started talking. He always said after that dark time I was the sunshine that came to save him. He's been gone 10 years now from seizing in his sleep, a few months after we decided to be friends. He was in my life for 2 years. He helped me be comfortable in my own skin and always listened to me and gave me advice. Especially when I felt the most misunderstood at school and home. How I wish I could hug him one last time and apologize for not appreciatating him more than 17 year old me ever did. You never know who means the most to you until their gone.

I really know what thats like Warren. < I lost my best friend at 18 , weeks before i was going to see him. And I lost a lover in 2006 to Borderline. > .... He KNEW I hope you do have someone now, if not a lover, than an intimate friend. 154 strangers think you are great. and for a few minutes* , one stranger Really wished after reading your comment , I could be that person for you . but thats probably just the magic of rock and roll, right? In high school my boyfriend learned to play this song for me, we loved bright eyes. We broke up before graduation and he got addicted to drugs after being a straight edge his whole life- he passed a few years later. This song randomly pops up every now and then, and I know it’s him saying Hi. I consider myself one of the lucky few that knew the “real” him. I know he’s at peace now, and “I’m glad I didn’t die before I met you” 💕

"positive" As in it's about the fun stuff of love, not the agony that follows a failed relationship. Entry way song has good lyrics, but the song itself is not as good as this one i think. And it's cool we can still be friends is not positive at all. It's a bitter song, that's amazing because of that. Art is subjective, and for me this is a song that describes the good feeling of love perfectly for me.

This is the first day of my life Swear I was born right in the doorway I went out in the rain, suddenly everything changed They're spreading blankets on the beach Yours was the first face that I saw I think I was blind before I met you And I don't know where I am, I don't know where I've been But I know where I want to go And so I thought I'd let you know Yeah, these things take forever, I especially am slow But I realized that I need you And I wondered if I could come home Remember the time you drove all night Just to meet me in the morning? And I thought it was strange, you said everything changed You felt as if you'd just woke up And you said "This is the first day of my life I'm glad I didn't die before I met you But now I don't care, I could go anywhere with you And I'd probably be happy" So if you wanna be with me With these things there's no telling We just have to wait and see But I'd rather be working for a paycheck Than waiting to win the lottery, ah-ha, mm-hmm Besides, maybe this time is different I mean, I really think you like me

I remember the day I met my soulmate. I was introduced to her on the first day of a new job. I jumped out of bed every morning after that to get to work so I could see her. The problem was she was married with two young boys and I was a nomad with a drinking problem. I decided that I needed to quit drinking and become a better man so that I would be worthy of someone like her. We were friends and would talk at work and I hung on her every word. I was in love and she was unavailable. She would introduce me to her girl friends and I really did try to date a couple but they all knew. As time went on, problems developed in her marriage unrelated to me. Well, I have not had a drink in 22 years and we have been married 18. We have raised 3 boys and have a wonderful life. I feel the same way I did on that first day, I was born right in the doorway.

I put this song on a CD for my wife back in 05-06. We got married in 2012 and the idea of working for a paycheck instead of winning the lottery has always stuck with me. It’s true, no matter how comfortable you feel in a relationship you have to keep working to show you care. Never take love for granted, it can be easy to obtain but hard to hold.

Like many other teenagers, I made the lucky mistake of getting into a relationship with a beautiful girl. Loving is hard, it's really hard. There's so much that I need to fix in me; she also told me that when she decided to break up with me. I thought that if I loved her enough, if I could help her with anything, we could hurdle over all the obstacles. That should be true right? It's not so black and white after all... It's a messy mix of bright colours. It's the first day of my life. It's my turn to love me.

To me this song is for my older sister. I remember her showing it to me when I was really little, back when she was going through the worst time of her life. She was so deep in depression and trauma, I was so close to losing her back then. Shes told me so many times since that she didn’t know if she would have made it to where she is now if I hadn’t have been there to love her through it, and I believe it. Everything has been worth it to have each other. Every time I feel entirely consumed with hatred for being alive, I think about this song and how she lived because her little sibling loved her and that was enough. I think about how lucky we are that we’ve had that, and that we’ve both managed to live enough to find so many other things to love with that intensity. I’m getting “I’m glad I didn’t die before I met you” tattooed one day, to remind myself of all of the things I’ll be so glad I lived to love, and to remind myself of my sister, who I’ve loved more than anything since the actual first day of my life

He reached out. He hates me, and that's for all the right reasons, and I will continue to love him. I am grateful to have met such a genuine and beautiful person. It's not a happy ending, but I will forever have all those memories with him that I can cherish. I will also have my regret but, as we well know or should know, we have to pay for most of the mistakes that we make. My biggest mistake was that I did not appreciate, at the time, all the good things he did for me. Kind as he is and always was, he gave me closure. Once again, even though I didn't deserve that. Cherish the ones you love, be kind, genuine, and always consciously appreciate what you have.

@@bluemarbles1 My fiance, the only woman I've ever loved, betrayed me so thoroughly, harsly, and repeatedly that I will never be able to forgive her. She said she hopes I can forgive her one day but also refused to do anything to deserve it. She even refused to give me closure when I thought my life depended on it. But her place in my heart is still there a year later. I am still trying to get rid of it or fill it with something else but maybe, no matter how little someone deserves it, we will always carry those people for life. I bet he still has you in his, even if it's tarnished beyond repair. You are still a part of each other.

My mom passed away from addiction about half a year ago. after she passed my family and I were rummaging through her belongings, putting the pieces back together and what not. I found one of her journals and it had “the first day of my life” written inside on numerous pages. When I initially heard this song I was dating a girl in highschool. At that time it encapsulated a completely different meaning. Not only is this my first time actually watching the video but the song itself resonates with greater proximity in contrast to highschool me. I can’t relate to being in-love while listening to this song but I do feel the purest intention of love from the marriage of his craft of song and his craft of visuals. I think I understand. Here’s to the first day of my life.

It's 2021 and I just rediscovered this song. A year and a half ago I broke up with my girlfriend of 6.5 years and through 2020 and early 2021 I went through a reckoning in myself where I retreated inward and addressed the things in me that led to the deterioration of that relationship. It was miserable, paying penance like that, and for so long. It was long enough that I started to wonder if I'd ever be happy again. Then I moved states, got my own place (first time ever living alone), and am building a new life that is all my own and I can't remember the last time I felt this happy. Soon after I started to feel this "complete" feeling in myself, someone I used to know and liked a lot reconnected with me out of the blue, and over the last three months we've been cultivating this friendship that I am certain will turn into a relationship at some point, but for right now we're taking things slow. She is quickly becoming my best friend and today, when I rediscovered this song, I realized that I am in love with this woman. Everything's changed and I feel as if I just woke up. She doesn't know this. Not yet. When we're ready to move forward, though, she is going to know. If you read this far, thank you. Love to all of you listening to this song right now.

I think of my parents when I hear this. My mom loved this song and had never heard of Bright Eyes before, I’d been listening for awhile. At my parents 20th anniversary, they danced to this song. My dad passed away 4 years ago, the year they would’ve had their 25th. I miss him, and she lost almost everything when he passed. I got out of rehab a few days ago, I had been struggling with alcoholism for a few years after his passing. She picked me up, and the first thing she told me was “this is the first day of your life”. It made me think about this song, and how happy I was when I heard it.

We have a pride month, prides days and scores of supporters in the media and arts. Even the army is very inclusive in this front too at the moment.

@@horses529 Ah yes, Disney, only the one of the biggest, if not the biggest media company in the world... What more do you want honestly? I like that I can live and be accepted for who I am in Britain but I don't need the validation of the media and the majority of the population to live that way. Why should I? Live your live well, don't worry 'representation'.

@@horses529 I'll give you another example. I'm a nonwhite immigrant in Britain. I don't need to see a nonwhites doing well to know that I can live well and succeed in Britain. Why should I? I've watched this video sooo many times. Besides the incredibly great lyrics ("Thought I was blind before I met you") and incredible songwriting, the video itself is just so touching and ahead of its time. Who agrees with this?

@@apocalypsedollofficial I'm pretty sure that they are listening to the song. Look at the "And I wondered if I could come home" (1:17), where the woman is holding a photo of her husband/boyfriend who seems to be either away or deceased, or "Remember the time you drove all night" (1:31), where the man starts gesturing like he is driving a car right after the line is stated. There are enough reactions to lines from the song in the video that it seems clear--to me, at least--that they are indeed listening to it.

I wish I had found this song earlier. I’ve never had a song affect me the way this one does. It encapsulates all feelings of life. It’s so comforting to listen to. I recently got into Bright Eyes and found that one of the earliest songs they have is titled “Lila,” which is my name. I’m not sure why but it made me feel like this was my calling. Like this song and this band was meant for me. Anyway, this song has been on repeat since I found it about 6 months ago. First time I listened I felt a certain feeling, and I put it on repeat for 2 hours after. What a beautiful and perfect song.

My wife and I instantly knew this was the song we would get married to, we just had our 14th wedding anniversary. I often listen to this song and remember that boy and girl from back then, when life was so simple. We have been through a lot of happiness and heartbreak over the years. This song in 2024 still brings up warm feelings of how much I love her, more today than all those years ago!

This song used to give me hope, and it still does. When it says "with these things theres no telling you'll just have to wait and see" then, "i rather spend my life working for a paycheck than waiting to win the lottery" to me it means you rather keep taking your chances than give up, hoping things magically happen without trying.

My mom and I listened to this album backward and forward while we picked up my brother from prison. I was in 5th grade going into 6th grade middle school. I thought it was normal for brothers to go prison. My brother and I are like phoebe and Holden we are still really close to this day and intending on going to a show this weekend. I love him and I love my mom for exposing me to this kind of music.

When this video came out in 2006, gay marriage was illegal in almost every US state. It was remarkable and brave for Bright Eyes to feature so much queer representation in this music video (directed by John Cameron Mitchell, a gay filmmaking icon). Thankfully we're now living in a time when it's only one of many music videos like this.

I used to listen to this song in my high school hallway, and I used to sit in a corner balling my eyes out, feeling soooo lonely, and imagining a different life. And here I am, 11 years ago, listening to this song again, feeling as lonely but what I learned is that too shall pass just like many other times and life is full of ups and downs that we need to embrace. I am sending you love for whoever feels lonely, may your dreams stay big and your worries stay small.

This is one of the first bands that my boyfriend showed me when were getting to know each other. I think this might be the song he showed me first. I remember I was alone in the living room of my sisters house, which I was living at at that time, around nighttime and even though I wasnt quite fully paying attention to the lyrics at that time, I began to feel overwhelmed with emotions. My initial thought was "wow, this is something that I would definitely listen to and I've never heard it before". Given the pain and loss I was still grieving at that time, I knew he had a lot of stuff he's been through just by showing me this since I knew all the pain I'd carry and what I'd listen to at that time. I began to cry and just wonder what pain he's been through. I ended up telling him "you've been through a lot, huh?" I normally wouldn't ask things like this straight out but I did it without thinking. I was so comfortable around him, I felt like he wouldn't judge me or think much of it. It of course caught him off guard but it grew us closer. We knew we could confide in one another and we knew pretty early on we wanted to be with each other and that we even needed each other. Almost 4 years later, we live together and have two beautiful boys. This song and band will always have a special place within my heart.
