I’m saddling a bunch of 4-inch pipe to build pipe saw horses or a pipe rack for my backyard pipe laydown yard or pipe yard. We started this project in last week's video (linked below) and while we did this I thought it was a great opportunity to talk about pipe templates and the ins and outs of using them and getting them to work properly and consistently.

Austin, I keep a couple of 2 or 3 ft long angle iron around. I put the Template on one end and mark at the seams. Just lay the angle iron edge on a mark and draw a line to the other end. Line Template seam on your line at your proper distance and mark your saddle

Learning more each time I watch your videos. The lesson on wall thickness is good. The tip on keeping the torch at 90 degrees while cutting saddles very helpful. Thanks again

Great content and thanks for sharing life experiences. An old drunk welder taught me years ago to start in the throat of the fishmouth and hold the torch straight to the ears not point to the center of the pipe and I didn't have to grind so much.

Thickness of pipe can make a difference. That looks like more than schedule 40, maybe 80. That’s some thick looking stuff.

I found a good rule of thumb for your saddle depth is 1/3 of the pipe .od less the wall thickness. On smaller diameter tube I use old wrap around material for a template. Or gasket material for larger ones.

piece of angle iron works good to draw the center line.

Austin, it looked like that bar clamp was given you a fit. If you got time make a v-block with one of the short off cuts from trimming the pipe down to size. Hope that made sense. Thanks for sharing your insight and experience.

Austin, belt loop height. Is fairly common. Think of setting up fence pipe in jacks. 9 times out of 10, top of a vee heads hit at a pout your belt/belt loops. Think of you your back, mainlinin’s been hard enough on us as it is when it comes to knees and our lower backs. Slight bend over time will wear a man down in a hurry! Dinner table height is roughly 28” -31” Std. Bar top ht. Is mostly 42” Best height in my experience has been 34-36” fixed heights on fab tables. Just some B2B resource networking, for ya. No puns intended, nor any disrespect!

If you don't "gas weld" much, you can use LP for fuel. Just different cutting tip. Less money than acetylene. The torch is much more versatile! Plasma is more fun!

@@haroldphipps3457 I've heard using propane requires more oxygen consumption, enough to make your oxygen bill add up to whatever you're saving with a lower cost fuel.

@Josh Kuehn I haven't seen that at all. I know the REAL scrap guys use the huge ass liquefied O2 tanks because of how much they cut.

A lot simpler way to get your measurements for your pipe rack legs would have been just to clamp your pipewrap around your pipe and measure 21" from the bottom of the throat of the template make a mark at 21" and then slide your template down to your mark to draw a line straight around your pipe. All that measuring the ears and the adding it to the rest of you 21" measurements was kind of unnecessary.

I’m using drop pieces to make my pipe racks so I needed to know what min length of pipe I needed for my short pups. I needed to know how long the ears were to make sure my shortest drop piece would be long enough.
