Ah, one of my favorites from Sade... lovely. She's a diva! 😍 The Ortofon looks like an antique car from the 50s, it's very elegant and sounds elegant too. Oh, and i immediately noticed the unmistakable trademark picture quality of a Dslr lens with its shallow depth of field. Very cinematic!

Thanks for your comments, Rui! Yes, the SPU is a vintage design, and it works very well in the SME arm with the vintage Lenco drive, too. It was all part of my master plan when deciding what new turntable to get ;o) Also I wondered if anyone would notice the different camera! I've been using a Canon Legria camcorder, but I really wanted more control - especially over aperture - so I bought a Panasonic Lumix GX7 from eBay. It's a mirrorless Micro Four Thirds camera, so not a DSLR, but the 14-42 kit lens seems pretty good (that's 28-84 in 35mm terms). I've a 14-140 coming, so I hope that'll give me more options.

And it's not just about control over aperture, shutter speed, etc. Picture quality is usually superior to what a consumer camcorder can offer: Cleaner less noisier image, creamy tonalities, and better dynamic range, which puts this type of cameras a bit closer to what old cinema film cameras can do. It has the potential to produce "arty" images! The downside is the learning curve necessary to master the technique, if one is not versed in photography. But if a person enjoys what he is doing, it's not really a downside! Your new zoom will get you very blurred backgrounds in its longer focal length, specially in close range focusing. But sometimes it's a PITA to keep focus on moving objects like the cartridge, due to a very shallow depth of field. I often use a 100mm Canon macro lens, and sometimes the focusing area has no more than 3 mm depth.

You're right about the learning curve, but I had a manual Olympus OM1 (and other OM bodies) many (many) years ago, and a Minolta Dynax system after that, so it's not the photography bit I need to master but the camera controls. The Lumix has a great iPad app that connects to it and allows a lot of control including focusing - tap on the image where you want it focused. Once I'd turned off continuous focusing in movie mode this allowed me to just keep the focus right. The shot just after the track finished was just a tap on the album sleeve in the background on the iPad to refocus it. The wonders of modern technology! I do wish I still had my darkroom going, though - processing your own film and photos was fun, and seeing a print come up in the tray under a safelight was always magical. I sometimes think digital photography has made everything too easy!

Nice one Bob, Sade is one of my all time faves and the Ortofon SPU a particular want of mine. It has a way of presenting music in an organic way, rather than a forensic examination. Can you find the time for a classical music track from the Ortofon? Regards Nigel

Thanks ;o) Yes, those are my thoughts on the SPU precisely. It's probably unwise for me to say this - but I think I've bought my last cartridge - the SPU just sounds so "right" with everything I've played so far, and doing the rip for this video was the first time I'd really felt that the rip was missing out on SQ versus hearing it direct. The SPU probably has about 40 hours on it now, so may still improve :o) And yes - there'll be classical, and jazz, tracks coming up . . .

would love to hear some more carpenters with the SPU!! I think that video of desperado had a lot of views Bob !!
@MusicAndVinyl
@MusicAndVinyl 7 жыл бұрын
Yes - Desperado seems to have done relatively well but my YT "trailer" views don't translate into views for the Vimeo posting (It was blocked on YT). I do have a couple of other Carpenters albums, though the pressing/surface quality is such I wouldn't want to inflict it on you, but another track from Horizon is certainly a possibility! I'll add it to my list ;o) Incidentally, the video that's climbing my own "charts" faster than anything else is the one from the latest Orchestra Baobab album.

This does sound good with the SPU! In the defence of that other record - it was a second-hand 12" that had probably had a hard life!

@MusicAndVinyl
@MusicAndVinyl 5 жыл бұрын
In my system here I use a pair of Harbeth Xpression DPM1-Pro active speakers, but what you hear on the videos is the signal taken direct from the phono amp to the analogue to digital converter (a Lexicon I-O 22). This gives a much better quality sound than recording the speakers with the camera microphone.
