I’ve always loved the “I remember his hands and the way the mountains looked, light shot diamonds from his eyes,” and the “war is still raging inside of me, I still feel the chills as I reveal my shame to you, I’ll wear it like a tattoo.” Like how much more poetic can you get

I haven't heard this song since 2003. So many things have happened, good and bad, since then. I was traveling with my mother, an army vet, and we vibed to this song on our way back home. I looked up the lyrics, and hearing that it was Sade's interpretation of a talk with a Vietnam veteran made it much, much stronger to me. I'm only 28, I was a young child hearing this song and never knew how heavy the implications are. Now the lyrics really resonate so deep with me, even beyond its general association. We all wear so much on us that way, but the stories we have to tell from it are timeless, just like this song.

I have such a hard time allowing myself to feel emotions, but Sade is the only artist who's work brings tears to my eyes just thinking about her voice, lyrics and her incredible band. I don't even have to hear this song, just thinking about it gives me goosebumps, her ability to create such beauty from such a dark subject matter. This comment makes me sound so dramatic, I swear I don't feel this strongly about any other artists. Sade isn't even in my preferred genre but man she draws you in.

Just spreading some knowledge for the people swinging in. I love reading this while listening to it. The final night of Sade’s 1993 Love Deluxe World Tour, Sade explained to her audience that “Like A Tattoo” was a true story based on the accounts of a stranger Sade met years ago on an evening at a New York City bar: A long time ago, I met a man in a bar in New York. He told me his story. This is his song. It’s about war and what he had to go through. The song’s grave tone reflects his guilt and shame over committing a war crime. Over the course of the song, we learn that he shot and killed a man who had his hands up in surrender-an act that may have also been witnessed by a significant woman in the victim’s life. But despite the soldier’s egregious act, the intensity of his regret is only possible because of the empathy present in his heart; his love for humanity...
@Sarah-bn3xr Жыл бұрын

So beautiful and so soothing. All I could hear in my head was this song when I visited the beach and let the waves wash my feet. I wanted nothing more than to just walk deeper and deeper with this song in my ears into the sea and let it engulf me and put me to sleep. I still somewhat regret not ending everything there when I felt so peaceful, even if that was a totally impossible situation to achieve, considering my family was with me. I'm 17, but all I can think about now, instead of finals and college and everything, is just how I didn't die in the waves that day. Regretful.
