Bullay Shah (1680-1757 is more than a sufi. He is subcontinent’s greatest exponent of peace and coexistence. His contempt for the clergy shows how little things have changed in the last 300 years and how the essence, the true spirit of religion, love & goodwill for humankind, has been hijacked by the right-wing fringe. His message simply, is that, the path to understanding the divine starts with looking within. Sharing a kafi by Bullay Shah performed by Abida Parveen which is her most brilliant performance. Have made an attempt at translating this performance and am also sharing alternate translations done by others so that you can enjoy the kafi to the fullest. Jay rab milda naataya-n dhoteya-n tay rab milda dadduan machiyaa-n noo-n Jay rab milda jangal phireya-n tay rab milda gaaiyaan vachiyan noon. Vay mian Bulleya rab onhaa-n noo-n milda Atay dileya-n sachhiyaa-n achiyya-n noon. My translation: If one could find God by (mere) bathing and cleansing, (then) frogs and fish would have found him long time ago If one could find God only roaming wilderness (then) cows and calves would have found him long time ago; O Bullay-yaa, only those will find GOD whose hearts are pure and true) Translation found on youtube /username - Umayr Masud: If washing and bathing were the ways to God Then Fish and frogs would have been closest to Him If wandering in the woods were the way to God. Then God would be closest to cows and calves. O Bullay-shah, only those who are pure and true at heart, find the way to God Translation by Fuad Usman Khan found on net: If the divine is found through ablutions surely frogs and fish would find him first if the divine is hidden in jungles, the cattle would have discovered him by now, O Bulleh, the divine is found by those with pure and true heart Parh Parh ilm hazaar kitabaa-n Kadee aprnay aap noo-n parhyaa naee-n Jaaan jaan vardhay mandir maseetee Kadhee man aprnay vich varyha naee-n Avaain larda ain shaitaan day naal bandayaa Kadee nafs aprnay naal larhya naeen Aakhay peer bullay shah Aasmaanee parhnai-n Jehra man vich vasda aye Onhoon pharyaa naeen Saadhay vayray aaya kar Yaar subh sham dost subh sham Haadi subh sham My translation (1) (You may have) read countless books but have you ever read (what is within) your Self, (You) rush to your temples, your mosques but you have never entered your own heart your quarrels with satan are useless as you have never fought with your own desires Says the sage bullay shah, you yearn for the one in heavens (but) you do not grab the one living in your heart Come to my abode, my love My love please stay, stay day and night My friend please stay, stay day and night My guide, please stay, stay day and night Translation (2) on youtube /username - Umayr Masud: You may have read thousands of books, have you had a glance at your self, they rush time and again into mosques and temples but they never enter their own hearts. You fight with satan in vain. You never confront your evil self within. Bullay-ya you seek the one in heaven but you never try to reach the one in yourself Translation (3) by Fuad Usman Khan on net: You have learnt so much and read a thousand books. Have you ever read your Self? You have gone to mosque and temple. Have you ever visited your soul? You are busy fighting Satan.Have you ever fought your Ill intentions?You have reached into the skies but you have failed to reach what's in your heart! Come to my abode, my love. My love please stay, stay day and night. My friend please stay, stay day and night. My guide, please stay, stay day and night Ooda rab vee naeen rusdaa rab dee soo-n Jinoon yaar manaavarn da chaj hoovay Onhnoo makkay jaarn dee lour-h naheen Jinoon yaar day vaikhya haaj hoovay (Even) the Lord is not displeased with those Who have the art of pleasing (serving) the beloved These are the ones who have no desire to go to Mecca (as) a glimpse of the beloved is a pilgrimage in itself Jungle dhoondhyam bayla dhoondyam (transition to another bullay shah verse) masjid dhaa day Mandar dhaa day Dhaa day jo kujh dhehnda Par kisaay da dil na dhaaveen Rab dillan vich raynda / (end transition) I have searched the jungle, I have roamed everywhere(transition to another verse by Bullay Shah) Knock down the mosque Demolish the temple Tear down whatever you can But never break a heart(because that is) where the lord resides Jungle dhoondhyam bayla dhoondhyam Dhoodyam saara jahaan Avain naa sataaya kar yaar subh-u shaam Saadhay vayray aaya kar Yaar subh sham dost subh sham Haadi subh sham I have searched the jungle, I have roamed wilderness I have searched (for you) the whole world Don’t cause me pain (of separation) day and night Come to my abode, my love My love please stay, stay day and night My friend please stay, stay day and night My guide, please stay, stay day and night (transition to Sultan Bahu’s verse) Tasbeeh baate phayr na Bahu Is tasbeeh da kee parharna hoo Jehra aprnay naal hisaab naeen karda Ooday naal hisaab kee karna hoo (end transition) What good are these rosary beads Bahu what will their reading (prayer) achieve how could we deal with (& trust) those who do not deal with themselves (holding themselves accountable for their actions)(end transition) Jay main jaaraan rothu-ra jo vaynedyaan Pakar ghinaan tayda paandh Avain naa phirayaa kar yaar subh sham If (ever I break your heart) & see you leaving I would hold on to you (plead you for forgiveness) and never let you go Don’t torment me all day long saadhay vayray aaya kar Yaar subh sham dost subh sham Haadi subh sham Come to my abode, my love My love please stay, stay day and night My friend please stay, stay day and night Chalvay bullayaa chal, chal oothay chaleeyay Jithay saaray anay Na koee saadee zaat picharnay Na koeen sanoon manayBullay-yaa Let’s go to a land where everyone is blind (where) no one recognizes (us on account of ) our caste or creed (and thus) no one acknowledges us for it Too aan saqee main aan pyasee Bhar bhar Daynda-ain jaam Bullay noo-n pilayaa kar yaar subh sham You are wine-bearer and I, eager with thirst Keep on filling my glass Keep on serving (wine) to Bullay Shah day and night Saadhay vayray aaya kar Yaar subh sham dost subh sham Haadi subh shamCome to my abode, my love My love please stay, stay day and night My friend please stay, stay day and night My guide, please stay, day and night
