When aired every Easter and every Christmas, I find myself enthralled yet again with the movie, JESUS OF NAZARETH, in which Robert Powell portrays Jesus. This mini-series has been around for 36 years, but it never fails to totally captivate and spellbind, regardless of how many times I have seen it before. I must confess, though, I rarely sit through the torture and crucifixion of Jesus in any of these movies.
IMHO, Robert Powell's portrayal of Jesus Christ is by far, without question, the most superb and exudes what I personally perceive to be the true essence of Jesus. Mr. Powell's depiction of Jesus projects an aura of Divine Presence and is an extraordinary performance which remains unrivaled to this day. There are now scores of movies on the life of Jesus, and still more are planned; but as yet, no performance has been as moving to me as that of Robert Powell's. Although JESUS OF NAZARETH featured many renowned actors and actresses, without the talents of Mr. Powell and those intense, soul-piercing blue eyes, it would have been just another in the long line of movies about Jesus.
I have assembled just a sampling of some epiphanic, life-altering scenes from Sir Lew Grade's infamous mini-series, JESUS OF NAZARETH.

SadLonelyLovePoems -- I couldn't agree with you more about the aura, the presence of Jesus felt in Robert Powell's performance as Jesus. It's as if (perhaps?) this version of the story of our Lord is anointed. I read somewhere, that while they were making this series, the crew didn't even like swearing, or cursing around Mr. Powell because he was so spot on as Jesus. It is a very beautiful story and the actors and scenery are like nothing that has come before or since when it comes to the life of Jesus Christ.

When I think of Jesus, Robert Powell's version of Him always comes to mind. Of course I've seen other movies about Jesus--I know that Jim Caviezal is a devout Catholic, but this is my favorite of all the movies. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with us about the movie Jesus of Nazareth. I too am one who has been profoundly affected by this movie ever since I was a teenager. It has literally changed by life for the better. And, yes, I too feel that Robert Powell was anointed by the Lord to play this role and that the Holy Spirit was working through him in this role to show us what Jesus is really like. Robert Powell said that he went up into the Atlas Mountains when he was getting ready to play this part and sat there in complete silence for up to 5 hours (yes, 5 hours!) at a time to meditate on how best to portray Jesus. I think that was a mountaintop experience where he came down with his face and soul glowing and then shared that with us in his portrayal.

Secondly, we did not have full manuscripts of many writings, from Homer, Livy, Plato, etc up to until 1,000 years after they were written. Yet we had a full Bible canon only 200-300 years after Christ, in Greek, Hebrew, Syriac, Latin.

If you read an interview that was done by James Barclay in Movie Stars magazine in May of 1977 you will see that Robert Powell says he has come to really believe in Jesus and His divinity through the experience of playing Him and that he was profoundly changed and affected by the experience. He also says he feels very privileged to be portraying the Lord in this role. So please don't spread unfounded and untrue things about Robert Powell.

Anne Patterson Amen Anne.. it could even have been true that at one time, Robert Powell was an atheist- even during playing the movie, and possibly was smoking in between scenes and wanted to put his own spin on everything in the beginning--- but I wouldn't be surprised he had a change of heart afterwards. Playing that part no doubt left an impression on him he couldn't shake off. I had heard that the actor who played Jesus during Mel Gibson's Passion of Christ many years later actually DID suffer hypothermia during the scenes while he was fastened to the cross for the filming. During this movie with Robert Powell, Ernest Borgnine who played the Roman Centurian, actually had a genuine vision of Jesus's face as He hung on the cross during the filming of that part. Robert Powell was ill that day and couldn't make it to the set, so they fastened a paper with an "X" on it, and told Ernest to look intently on that paper and imagine it was Jesus. Suddenly he had an actual vision of the REAL Jesus in agony and eyes full of love while in pain. THAT left an imprint on him the rest of his life. If you go to that scene, the stunned look on Ernest Borgnine's face is genuine.

Even if all you say were true that doesn't change the FACT, that Robert Powell played the best Jesus of any actor. that ever took on the role. He played Christ Jesus with such respect to the ONE who he was playing, and to the audience that would be watching. And it doesn't change the FACT that Franco Zefferelli more than any other producer/director about the life of Christ Jesus, used the Holy Scriptures as his "screenplay" . Therefore the words you hear the actors speak, and the actions you see them take come directly from the New Testament.

Most of these comments are parrot fashioned quotes Not one religious person has ever been able to directly answer my question which is; if there is a God why does he let so many millions of innocent people, especially children, suffer on a daily basis in this world from war to terminal diseases, non of them can ever answer it without quoting from a Bible. Religion is a form of brain washing handed down in families, some people need something to believe in to help them get through their lives, like a sort of 'crutch'.
