@gamingnation77minecraft
@gamingnation77minecraft Жыл бұрын
The planes look odd due to the rules of the challenge. They are designed with an insane amount of aerodynamics taken into consideration. Most of the planes are built to lift weight not look nice. Students calculate every detail of these planes, and most test them as well. They are tested for lift, drag, staling, wakes, etc in wind tunnels or on the back of a truck if you are a small school like us. We can always do better because that is engineering but looks or efficiency were not part of the goal. Not the goal for a KC-46 to go supersonic if you catch my drift

Shout out to all of the people supporting these teams!! Most of these teams are a small group of students 10-20 who design and build the plane from the ground up. They’re only allowed one academic year to work on the plane. And they have to work on the plane outside of school. They do this in addition to school. Most of the schools attending don’t have aerospace degrees. Most of these teams are made up of rc enthusiasts.

So many of these designs would have been more impressive had the conditions been so harsh. Like flying a Cessna into a tornado harsh. Conventional designs like Texas A&M shine bright as did some of the high tail wing designs, while narrow landing gear and or flying wing designs were caught off guard by the high winds. In my book everyone there was a winner under those conditions.

@@julesdomes6064 from the rules pages... SAE Aero Design features three classes of competition-Regular, Advanced, and Micro. 1. The Regular Class is an all-electric class intended to develop a fundamental understanding of aircraft design. 2. The Advanced Class is an all-electric class designed to inspire future engineers to take a systems approach to problem solving, at the same time, exposing them to explore the possibilities of autonomous flights. 3. The Micro Class is an all-electric class designed to help students balance trades studies between multiple conflicting requirements. e.g. carrying the highest payload fraction possible, while simultaneously pursuing the lowest empty weight possible. ... There are a lot of restrictions like a 750W power limiter, maximum wingspan, weight limit, etc. And since the scoring formula considers things like weight these models are pushing the boundaries of weight-to-thrust. Hence, they look so slow and barely able to fly.

@jetsetretro

I wouldn’t call it engineering just yet. The designs didn’t even take into account the amount of thrust or power needed to fly such horribly draggy monstrosities. Like, one afternoon of research into measuring kv, thrust, escs batteries and power systems would have done them a lot better. Instead they ignored the most important variables like power systems and the amount of wing area needed to fly an aircraft with stability. Glad they’re interested and at least trying but it seems they didn’t do much research into the vital components of flight like center of gravity, power, wing areas to even remotely call themselves engineering students yet. Like I was building gliders that flew better as a little kid because I had a real interest in what makes planes fly vs just building something that looks cool. Long ways to go. But at least they’re showing interest even if efforts are misplaced due to a gross lack of real research and making design decisions based on assumptions vs fact or data. Bad engineering. Good engineering takes science into account over aesthetics.

Nope watched the entire vid (twice in fact) entertaining, but absolutely nothing there was remotely impressive at all really. Any 12 year old kid can watch a flite test video and build a plane that flies much better inside of a weekend. Again you guys didn’t pay attention to the physics and science behind what was needed. Which resulted in the piss poor performance of everything that flew. If you call any of it impressive you simply don’t know anything of rc or flight dynamics at all. Get over yourselves kids you have a pretty long way to go before you even suck at flying. Just because you got it off the ground doesn’t mean it flew well lol 😅 But keep at it, good spirit. over time you’ll learn. 👍

Everyone with an engineering/aeronautical brain Should have made a biplane with silkspan or some other ultra light plastic covering a balsa rib, spruce stringer, but I digress... The lifting wing body guys were micro class and did not read those rules. Guess I am being lazy, but honestly do not care about them. Nor did I list the open class with multiple motors which are essentially same as regular with addition of payload fraction in scoring equation and they do have unlimited runway, but still limited to 55lbs max I believe. A lot of these teams are made of engineering students whose passions were ignited by flying RC. The competition is designed to make students break away from the knowledge of RC and just use RC as a platform for a challenge. For example, most RC airplanes have crazy low wing loading or crazy high power-to-weight figures compared to full scale. These are both controlled in the competition to make the design a lot more difficult and a lot more like the full scale. I could bring out my Showtime 50 and fly 3D for the competition but where is the challenge in that. Most teams have very skilled RC pilots on the team (these are usually the ones flying the planes) but the skills don't translate well

At first glance I honestlly thought this class was a challenge to make a flying model using only your mother's linen closet contents - on closer inspection I still think that, I really don't get everyone's appreciation and amazement here, what are the constraints? Why do these things look like they were designed by toddlers using scraps for construction? In this day and age where even someone with no aeronautical insight can construct a scale looking craft from quality materials in a day and then fly it successfully with almost no skill, it is strange to see people applauding these community oddities - not one was well constructe3ed or flew inherently stable

I guess there has to be the guy you will call a troll, so as not to disappoint here are my comments. !. where is the narration that explains what the objectives were for these unconventional designs. 2. I was surprised that most of the aircraft failed to demonstrate stability or were on the hairy edge of flight. Perhaps I knew what the objectives were it would make sense. My take away is that these groups don't seem to have the basics of flight down and this is a result of people who really should be in some other field besides engineering. I'm sure there were some capable people involved but their ideas were drowned out by the incompetent. It might also help if various clubs competed in a separate class which would allow the uninitiated to see what is really capable..

These young people don`t seem to learn much from their previous experiences with the same planes . Just like the first time I saw these planes fly , almost every plane was seriously tail-heavy . Someone should explain to them how important proper CG is . For some reason they just don`t get it . I understood it at ten years old . Not all planes were like that , but most of them were .

You know....shouting, screaming and whistling while a pilot is getting a "new" design into the air is probably not the easiest thing to manage while keeping it in the air and attempting to trim it. Just saying...😐
