Just a guess but I find myself wondering if having half a dozen cars filled with tourists watching her might be a large part of the stress the mother is reacting to?

Well it makes sense, but these elephants are so use to people that it may just be part of their landscape. Plus the people involved are well educated by their experience with the elephants. At least I sure hope so.

If it wasnt for this reserve and the people here to help them they would be all poached, habitats are getting scarce and scarce - another it pays for anti poaching police that risk there lives everyday to catch these poachers - as far as elephants and animals living in the wild and free away from danger, well that ship has sailed - if it wasnt for these reserves they would be on there way to a mass extinction -

MsDebbiB I've often wondered why there is such a stark contrast in the way the herd reacts to child birth. The herd will either crowd around the new baby and mother, or keep an extreme distance. I was thinking the same thing your are, and that is maybe the mother sometimes send signals to the herd that she needs her space and wants to be alone with her new baby. I adore elephants.

This had nothing to do with humans. I was watching this live Safari before they went to a special video to show others this baby. This is the video you're watching. As soon as the mom stepped off the placenta, she was trying to mask the smell that predaters might smell, the baby died instantly. It had been keeping the baby tethered and that's why it could not stand up well or walk.

Oh my the mother is so stressed out... Ya think?? How many vehicles, people, videotaping, photographing and staring at her are there. She doesn’t have support of her herd and no doubt the cause of the stress is you.

How sad. 22 months of carrying her child and then labor to have her baby and baby dies without human intervention. It breaks my heart. 💔💔💔💔💔 Beautiful animals. What an honor to have these beautiful, humble animals on earth and this precious baby dies. 😢😢😢😢

The rumblings were meant for humans watching...interfering...with a very sacred time for elephants. The mother seems stressed by you and the others. If left alone to check things as all mothers do, she may have caught the umbilical cord being out of reach. Poor baby probably died because cars surrounded her, possibly frightening the herd away. Can you imagine going through labor and then having elephants in cars staring at you and your new baby?

Seem's it never detached from the umbilical cord and on top of that Mom trying to bury the afterbirth that was still attached.

MsDebbiB I didn’t see any other video besides this one, but I guess the baby died??? I just knew something was wrong while I watched this video. Way too much abnormal behavior on the moms and the baby’s part....so sad. Elephants are amazing, tender giants.

the baby did die. The sack was actually berried half in ground and then in one part of video you see the other part of sac around baby. mother noticed but not until it was way to late. once you know the story and watching the video again, you will notice it all. When the baby is moving front and back , it is trying to move towards mom but is stuck. there are other video explaining situation@@katrogers3932

this is a perfect case of why commentary is best added in post, and even more so why it is a feature you can disable on dvd and blu ray. 99 percent of what she said was either not necessary or just plain annoying!
