What is the main purpose of the booster explosive? Why not just directly connect to the main explosive?

One reason is for safety. The main explosive is made to be very insensitive. That way it's easier to handle, transport, etc. The other reason is that lots of high explosives are very insensitive. The main explosive is so insensitive that it requires a strong shock wave to explode. And that's exactly what the booster provides after it explodes. Check out the article below.
