Safe Water: Safe Food

Water quality influences our health and while the world struggles with old problems such as cholera many types of contaminants have emerged. Outbreaks of disease associated with drinking water impact health in people around the US and the world. There are major threats that influence water quality including climate change, aging infrastructure, biofilms and issues at the interface between water and food. We measure water quality using fecal indicators and new tools such as qPCR and microbial source tracking methods. This helps to determine the pollution levels and the source of the pollution. These data are needed for making good management decisions with quantitative microbial risk assessment as endorsed by USEPA and WHO.

Joan B. Rose is an international expert in water microbiology, water quality and public health safety publishing more than 300 manuscripts. Her work addresses the use of new molecular tools for surveying and mapping water pollution for recreational and drinking water; assessment of innovative water treatment technology for the developed and developing world and use of quantitative microbial risk assessment. As the Co-Director of the Center for Advancing Microbial Risk Assessment, she links water quality data to quantitative microbial risk assessment to improve policy choices. Since 2003 she has held the Homer Nowlin Chair in Water Research at Michigan State University, US. Rose has received many additional honors, including: the first female recipient of the US National Water Research Institute's Clarke Prize, the inaugural Hei-jin Woo Award from the International Water Association in 2008, a Public Service Medal from the Singapore Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, election as a Fellow in the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and induction into the US National Academy of Engineering. Dr. Rose holds a PhD and a BS from the University of Arizona and an MS from the University of Wyoming.
