Great reporting, rich in detail. Hawaii has everything coming together. Using water as the feed stock with the abundance of solar and wind resources you're focusing on a real path forward, and a model for the 21st century. An energy system (solar-water-hydrogen) operates with no fuel costs, no toxicity, industrial strength, greater safety and higher performance. There's a future in that. Hawaii has everything to gain from this renewable water battery technology driven by distributed solar energy. Economically, the world treats energy as a commodity, if you need it - you pay some vendor for it - the price always changing. The solar water cycle your system demonstrates would change the fundamental economics of energy in Hawaii from a high-cost variable commodity, into a lower fixed cost - reducing energy prices while abating pollution from traditional fuels. Hawaii has a bright future as you accelerate this work. Looking forward to your next report.

Pure water converts to liquid hydrogen at a roughly 1:32 ratio based on the atomic mass of water vs hydrogen. But if you use solar power to convert it, and eventually recycle all involved equipment, you can generate useful power at a fixed cost in a closed cycle since the hydrogen just becomes water again.

liquid H2 needs to be maintained at minus 250C or there abouts, so the cost of getting H2 to liquid state means that unless you do it al large scale it's too expensive to make. The optimum liquid H2 plant produces 30 ton's/day of H2.

Why is there a preference for fuel in the form of hydrogen instead of hydrogen to electric prior to energizing our cars? 2. Why don't we just 'mine' the hydrogen in space? Seems easier than processing water for hydrogen. Best wishes +ThinckTechHawaii :) I found this presentation highly educational, thank you! Hydrogen is the future! - Float Circuit.

Very nice explanation.. love it.. very clear.. If you don't mind Stan, a small question on the h2 market that I can not understand. Why everybody seems to use cylindrical tanks? You said that the biggest issue is the storage.. but I dont understand why nobody take the advantage on the volume/surface ratio benefits of the sphere and the scale. Those cylinder tanks does not take advantage of scale, neither volume/surface ratio. For example: If you use 1 sphere tank with the same surface than 1 cylindric tank, then you get 50% more volume, then if you remplace all those 6 cylindric tank with 1 sphere tank with the same surface than all those cylinders, you get 450% more volume at the same cost. But still.. most applications use it.. why??

First thing I have to say.... This is obviously not Stans channel but someone who has taken the footage and posted it on you tube instead of having to watch it on tv. Now on the the point. Have you ever tried to move a tank of that shape or of that size???? Normal tanks as they are can be very annoying to move and very very heavy. Shape is a very big issue when it comes to that kind of thing. Although I do understand your way of thinking it is very impractical to have something like that for the average person since no one would have a way to move it realistically without help and it would take up allot of ground space in their storage area. With the stand up tanks I believe that you actually get a better amount of storage if you are a company that has to deal with storing the tanks and filling them as well as ship them out.
@AngelLestat2
@AngelLestat2 7 жыл бұрын
I was digging more in the cylindrical vs spherical tank issue since my comment.. What I find out is that is not an issue of handling. is because cylindrical shapes were always (mostly in the past) easier and cheap to manufacture, You simply need a flat metal sheet and fold it like a cigarette, but cyindrical has another flaw beyond volume wasted, they resist less pressure. Now with carbon fiber and automatic machines who "paint" layer by layer.. the spherical shape is not longer an issue, that is an issue only if you start from flat metal sheets, but this technology is still new and there is not a huge demand yet, so nobody made big investments to set a factory of spherical tanks.. But this is an opportunity... About the handling, that is the less of your concerns and can be easily fix it in case you care.. but these tanks are not made to move them from one place to another.. PD: I read a PDF where is explained all the details about tanks manufacture, they explain all shapes, I also find info from NASA, which now is experiment with spherical fiber carbon tanks.

Solar makes power, it takes 12V at X amps to make hydrogen from water. If you want it for a fuel cell you will be losing power due to friction and heat. If you want it to store as a "battery" then I guess it might be okay as an emergency backup. If you want it as a combustible for stuff like an HHO torch and anything then 110% do it, but use a system that separates the hydrogen and oxygen so you can store them separately. Hydrogen with more than 4% oxygen mixed in will create a bomb in the container.

Blue fuel Systems H2o gas I think Fabian is right about certain things. This technology is not well suited for car application, BEVs are simply superior. Trying to make it fit would be a wasted opportunity anyway, since burning hydrogen in gas-powerplants is so much more valuable as aid to balance powergrid-fluctuations caused by renewable energy sources. You could even biologically or chemically methanate the H2 and feed it into the heating gas grid in the winter times. Decarbonising the primary energy resources also means to find a carbon neutral way to heat peoples homes as well. And since the transportation sectors already undergoes a promising technological development it would be unwise to not use h2 in another sector. What do you think?
@oddjobbobb
@oddjobbobb 4 жыл бұрын
I think the live of EVs in Hawaii is related to the fact you don’t produce them in Hawaii and don’t ever have to deal with that noxious part of the supply chain. Disposal and replacement is never something battery proponents want to talk about. An “aged” Tesla that needs new batteries can hardly be given away. Same for older Toyota Prius. And by the time you need new batteries the battery tech is advanced so retrofit of batteries becomes another issue. The only positive about battery cars is that the government subsidizes them d sad so heavily that they seem cheap. Take Tesla off the welfare dole and their sparkle dims.

How viable would a H2 electric generator be? It seems this could be a great way to store solar energy for use in winter, if it can be stored decently. In summer you end up producing tons of power while in winter the days are very short so it could help. Where would one buy a very high pressure compressor if they wanted to build something like this? Most compressors you can buy only go up to around 135psi.

Akash Saini Mr. Osserman will have better stats and numbers but consider this: a hydrogen leak disperses fast (really fast, which is why, in a combustion engine H-2 works so well) and it disperses upward. Gasoline fumes sink, increasing dangers of combustion as the fumes travel along the ground looking for an ignition source.

The firefighters trained by Dept of Energy national labs all say hydrogen is safer than gasoline or propane. A lot like diesel as far as safety goes, but for different reasons. The main reason is that hydrogen is so light it rises and disburses so fast it's hard to get it to ignite, The storage tanks are also very well designed and strong with safety mechanisms built it.

An even better way to store hydrogen is in hydride or lithium 6. The hydride will absorb the hydrogen in high density amounts and won't be released until a heat source is put to it thus making it a controlled release. You could get in a head on collision with another car and the tanks could be crushed or broken in half that has the hydride stored in it and even when the hydride is full of hydrogen it is safe. You could literally shoot incendiary rounds at the tank and it would not explode. The hydrogen again is trapped in the hydride is only released slowly using heat. It's literally the safest way to store and transport hydrogen.

Hence the reason for the flash-back arresters used with the torches. When HHO burns it is more of a detonation than an explosion. @@Inertia888 I made hydrogen at home as a 15 year old using two carbon rods from zinc carbon batteries and a model HO train transformer. The setup included two jars inverted upside down in a plastic wash pan so that they were filled with water. One carbon rod was inserted from the underside opening of each jar with the openings of the jars under water. I think the HO transformer was variable with a max of 12 volts. When the power was turned on oxygen bubbled from one rod and hydrogen bubbled from the other. I could tell which was which by the volume of gas produced. If I dropped a match into the oxygen it would would flare bright and burn real fast. The hydrogen would explode with a load pop.

@@voxelmaniam first off, thank you for the detailed description. I may give it try since I'm a bit of a tinkerer myself. So it seems that if hydrogen is easy to harvest than the missing element is the desire to build motors and generators that run on hydrogen?

Hello Stan, I just watch this video almost 2 years later.... I have few questions.. everybody is talking about Fuel cell and I like them ... as a matter of fact all hydrogen form of energy. But I m with a group who still like spark ignition engines, especially since I would like to restore old cars and run them with hydrogen( I was sold to hydrogen 40years ago, because a magazine said: you can burn it on a v8 motor too) ... if I m able to make a solid hydrogen storage tank Eg: metal hydride, with low pressure: no more than 1000 psi. Will your H2 dispenser handle it??
@fabianseewald7884
@fabianseewald7884 4 жыл бұрын
hydrogen is extremely hot while burning and can damage an engine especially an old one, hydrogen can push atoms through solid steel and even attack a metal storage, however natural gas is a good alternative for classic cars and less dangerous and cheaper and you don´t need a huge storage system.

Im just leaving you with the information that you can either chemically or biologically methanate H2. Methane is basically natural gas/heating gas. Don’t know if it’s still relevant for you a year later now.

The Millennium Reign Energy equipment in this video can fill up to 5,000 psi tanks. There's also a UK car show that runs on the "Motor Trend" channels that does electric conversions and they have done one fuel cell conversions. Internal combustion engines don't do well with Hydrogen unless you can inject it under pressure and delay the timing so you are injecting just prior to top-dead-center.

That's why I'm still driving on fuel..... There are only two hydrogen tankstations in the Netherlands. A machine as you shown us: how much tank fillings (%) I would have (Toyota!) per 24 hrs?

I agree this fuel cell is a lie or more to the point unnecessary and has been don't to confuse the truth, I am telling you this because over forty years ago I was shown a Holden Kingswood run on tap water with no fuel cell at all, he filled his fuel tank with strait tap water and showed it was going into the carburettor. He only gave us a quick description on how he did it as he was trying to sell it to Holden but got told they were not interested and got the same from Ford as well and after that he was visited by two men that told him to keep his mouth shut, but when he showed it to us there was a twenty seven year old that had seen it as well and built his own two years later and the man who showed it to us was killed, But what he told us was all he did was increase the jets in his carburettor and built this coil he had mounted on the side of the motor that was about 4x4 inches in size to burn the water and that was it, no fuel cell at all, when water is placed under a vacuum and hit with x-ray frequency releases hydrogen and is what I think is going on with this system and is as safe as. I know this is real and is a fact so to say it is fake is not quite correct it is just being done the wrong way.
@fabianseewald7884

so the car ran on batterys to fuel the coil and had a watertank? if you seperate water to combine it again your engine produces less power than the process needed to fuel the seperation? maybe they weren´t interested because it´s pointless to create hydrogen to burn it.

how many kilowatt hours to produce one kilogram of hydrogen? How much does hydrogen go for there? Edit: See, these are not comments that are helpful. My research (but the results were really ambiguous) leads me to believe that it takes between twenty and fifty KW/H to produce a kilogram of hydrogen. But that's a huge range. I was really hoping to narrow it down. Similarly, research is really unspecific, but it's somewhere between $3 and $16 per kilogram for hydrogen. Again, that's a very broad range. For people wondering if this could be a going concern, these differences matter.

it depends, hydrogen is mostly extracted from natural gas as it is the cheapest method to come by, electrolisis is very inefficient and you have to do the reverse wich is similarly inefficient, that´s why hydrogen isn´t compatative as prices are concerned

@Stan Osserman You don't need a fuel cell at all just increase the fuel jets in the carburetor to allow enough water into the motor and a high voltage x-ray frequency to burn the water in the motor nothing more.
