First of, thank you so much for your effort to educate us, it is endlessly appreciated! :) I cannot thank you enough. Secondly: when i started packing the PC this way when i made my A license, people were looking at me, asking why i am packing it that way, but, the reaction was one of three. 1) No understanding(or will to do so) of the situation and why it a good thing to practice. 2) Very neutral 3) Saying that it is unnecessary, and that it doesnt change anything. When i saw how the 'packers' packed my PC, i started to at least repack the PC to make sure of this at least. People just folded it (most of em) and then stuffed into the pouch, its ridiculous. There is so much more that can be taught when beginning, but it seems that if you don't pursue it yourself from the first day on, you're not told a lot if you don't reason logically about it

A few things that I want to add to this information: 1) It is impossible to pack your pilot chute this way if you forget to cock the kill line. (How cool is THAT?) 2) Be sure that you do not wrap the bridle around the handle. It should be on the side of the pc that faces the rig. This can cause a pc malfunction. Common sense I think. Wishing you all many happy landings! Bri

I tried your method just now, but not before I tried to extract my pilot chute with the method I used previously. I can tell you that my bridle didn't come out at all, and it was impossible to move! Tried your method and love it. The bridle coming all the way out before the PC has the added benefit of getting the bag as far above you as possible, increasing the drag and chance of extracting the PC. Thanks dude!!!!!!!

It's just a standard pilot chute packing method. But it is nicely presented, from someone who people can trust, and clearly shows the "bunching up" hazard for those who don't understand that issue with where the bridle goes. Brian goes further than most do, by folding the bridle while the PC is on the rig rather than just near the bottom of the rig, in order to have absolutely the minimum extra bridle left out of the PC that needs stuffing in as the PC goes into the pouch. A useful video.

Interesting , When I brought a variation of this method to your attention at the APF Tech conference in the late 90's I was met with resistance from several senior riggers present and brushed off coz I was just a junior jumper at the time . I still teach this method today and am constantly astonished most people are still not aware of it

I've already been packing my pilot chute using a similar method but for a different reason. I only wanted there to be less friction with the underside of the pilot chute when I pull. In most cases, a Freefly handle will still release in the event of an out of sequence deployment. The only way to know for certain is to test it on the ground. Keep in mind that packing this way also prevents packing the pilot chute uncocked. Even if your Freefly handle resists a pilot chute extraction, it is still an improvement in safety due to this reason.

Hi Brian, This weekend I had my first reserve ride. (jump 372) Due to a hardpull. Tried twice but couldn't get the pilot out, so reserve procedure. On the ground we found the pilot balled up in the pocket. I have a bungee pilot on a vector rig. The rig was not packed by myself. When I pack myself I use your method and never had any problems pulling. So whenever I am using a packer I will ask them to use your method or not pack the pilot so I can do it myself. Thanx for the vids!

That is a great question. A pullout is a great way to reduce the risk of pc in tow or a horseshoe malfunction. The downsides are few, and include risk of an out of sequence deployment as the container is open before the pc hits the air. This could result in an entanglement, but it is rare. Some pulpits have a short bridle, which can cause of hesitations and poor openings. The last concern that I know of with a pullout is the risk of not finding the handle. This can be caused by having the pullout "pud" become dislodged from its pouch. You then be going straight to the reserve, with no risk of the main falling out. As an aside, it is not clear that the correct procedure for a of in tow on a throw out is to go straight to the reserve. Some of us are of the mindset that if the deployment has been initiated, deliberately or inadvertently, a cutaway is warranted. If the main comes out, you don't want to be attached to it.

Hi "sweatykev01", Unless you are really high and very experienced, leave your hook knife in the pocket unless there is no other option. Try throwing the pilot-chute first. If you can't get it out, then just chop. There is a pretty good chance it will clear anyway. Hopefully you helped an old person across the street that day and earned some karma points...

I wonder if this method would still work for a freefly BOC handle that tucks in under the container flap where the bridal is stowed before folding it in the pilot chute. In the event of a horseshoe with pilot chute still in pouch, I wonder if the free fly handle tab would keep the pilot chute/ bridal from extracting with whatever folding method you use. I hope I didnt miss something in the video.

I still pack this way. No problems noted when done exactly this way, or with the bridle on the canopy fabric, as opposed to being inside on the mesh. Both ways work, but since I use an F-111 PC, I don't put the bridle on the mesh anymore. I found some minor damage on the mesh after several thousand jumps on the PC. This damage was not dangerous, and the openings did not change when I switched to a new PC.
