Sir Kathak is originated from Varanasi. Kathak is derived from lord Shiva tandav and Devi parvati lasya since Kathak has both Anga. But it also has rhythm of lord Krishna's rastuna nritya so it's like Kathak is derived from Lord Krishna's raas.

That's why Kathak is a classical dance. Classical Indian dances are those dances whose roots are found in the Natya Shastra. It is a book on dances that convey stories of Hinduism. Kathak's root word is literally 'katha' (story) Most of the classical dances are from the South, where there was less Islamic influence. Only Kathak was deeply influenced by Persian styles since the North was always occupied by them.

Yes in Ancient Natya Shastra Kathak is mentioned and the word Kathak comes from Sanskrit word Katha meaning story telling through mudras and positions as i have learnt this beautiful dance in school and now i am interested in learning Bharatnatyam because of its postures and mudras which are very based on yoga postures and it is also very ancient almost 2500 yrs old mentioned in Natya Shastra.

3:15 Kathak did flourish during mughal time but It originated by travelling Hindu bards and entertainers - kathakārs - and flourished and reached its peak with the Bhakti movement because of its charming and thrilling enactment of the stories of Krishna.
