@@movingforwardLDTHjust my two cents as a 6’6” male who frequently camps in both pull up sites and out in the middle of nowhere, I always have a firearm with me. I’m not as concerned of other people but wildlife, I’ve had packs of coyotes, mountain lions, mother moose’s either waking me up or getting to close for comfort. Luckily I’ve never had to use one other than as a noise maker, and I’m not the biggest 2nd amendment advocate, but when it comes to being alone out in nature I’d much rather have it as a last resort than a whistle or pocket knife.

Get a large dog, you will have a camping / hiking partner and be safer at the same time. They have the magic of making vulnerability disappear. Their ears will let you know if anyone is near even if the danger is not near. I camp alone a lot , just myself and my german shepherd, we have gone to so many places on adventures. I would have never wondered alone on adventures if it wasn’t for my dog and her ability to make me feel safe by just existing.

A high lumen flashlight is your best friend while camping. Most bad things are gonna happen at night, so having a blinding flashlight with a strobe mode can completely blind an attacker in the pitch black of night. SWAT teams use bright lights and flash bangs to great effect and so should you. Combining bear mace with a blinding light would work fantastic. Have a knife you can open with a flick of a finger with 1 hand. If something bites or restrains an arm being able to attack with another can save your life. A spring assisted knife is usually best because it's the easiest and fastest to open in a high adrenaline situation. Keep your car fob on you and use your panic button to draw attention if you need help.

Solo camper/hunter here: Good for you. Genuinely. You've done something most people are too scared to do, and there is not anything wrong with them. For your next step I HIGHLY advise camping solo on BLM land or dispersed camping in a national park. Legit away from a trail or a road and true wilderness by yourself. I recommend a hammock (don't forget whoopie slings, and over/under quilt), bear spray (I'm very 2A and still carry, but stats show bear spray results in more human lives saved than a big gun), and packing high fat foods to lower the weight of your backpack. Remember in bear country keep your food separate from your bag at least 100 yards from your sleeping area. Campground camping is fun. It truly is. But just WAIT until you see what you are truly capable of, and what type of wilderness you will witness. If you have the funds please invest in a an emergency Garmin, and please take a wilderness survival class. You don't need to go 17 miles deep in the woods, maybe a mile from the main road away from car noise and in a place you find safe. And for the love of all skin: pack extra bugspray. Ps: full medical kit including Israeli bandages. It sounds like a lot but in total we are talking about adding 10-15lbs of equipment to the backpack and you can move at YOUR own pace. You deserve to hear/taste/feel what that solo freedom feels like. Rise above campgrounds. Try BLM or national dispersed camping. I believe in you

The only way things will change is if men start calling out other men for disgusting behavior. Things like strip clubs and 🌽 sites almost ensure that our society won't get better. Also terms like "boys will be boys" to justify bad behavior add to the piss poor mindset most people have.

Always bring 2 chairs, but here is some additional advice: never keep food in or around the tent. If possible cook at an empty space nearby. A bb gun for wild dogs, or your own dog is also helpful. Try to camp near the campground attendant, and introduce yourself when you get there. Camp where you have cell service and make sure you check in with your family when you get there, and at least once a day. Bring an emergency kit, and familiarize yourself with it and how it's individual components are used. Source- I solo camp in bear country, and im a woman.

If the chips were down and you’d come from deep sleep and you’re fumbling in the dark, it might take you too long to make it ready. I think you’d increase your odds with a fixed blade? Pls also bear in mind, if you’ve come from sleep your muscles might be at less than 50% strength, which is why I’d personally recommend 9mm hollow point.

Also bear spray is very effective I’ve been charged multiple times with groups and bear spray deterred the bear immediately, a gun works too but by no means should you say bear spray isn’t saving you… trust me from personal experience bear spray works amazing

Just remember that bear spray is an absolute last resort- it should only be used if you are being charged. You should always use proper vigilance. Also bring an empty tin can filled with small rocks and taped shut- this is used to shake to let bears know you are around and that they shouldn't come close. It's always better the scare off a bear than to face one charging at you.

Where were you camping, South Central? You are scaring people away from participating in an incredibly safe hobby. Would you make as big of a deal about getting a cup of coffee from Starbucks? You are a lot safer camping in a park than getting coffee. Why is pretending to be a victim fun these days? I want everyone to know that camping and being outdoors is one of the safest & most enjoyable things you can do, solo, or with a group. Depending on where you are camping, though, the bear spray is a good idea.
