I broke one of my fingers 10 years ago because the horse ran off and I held on to the rope.

Yup, I always do this 😅 Most of last year I had to handle a horse who was always nervous around the indoor arena and this helped a lot 😂

It's very frustrating seeing people at my barn do the first thing while leading ponies in birthday parties (teaching children to do the same). At my old barn, someone lost a finger doing that 😃

Great tip 👍 here's another one : tie a knot in the end of your lead and grip just above it with your left hand ; it acts as a retaining pommel in your horse rears up or something

the horse i ride is 23 and in the year i’ve known him he has literally NEVER spooked. the owners say he literally hasn’t spooked at anything in the time they’ve owned him, so honestly i just go wild with the lead rope and he just trails along😭 i should probably get to fixing how careless i am in the way i hold it😅

Yep mg mom did this once before she was afraid of riding them and my dad had sassy horses and it spooked and my mom had it like that and she broke on of her fingers I told my mom once that the horse spooked on me (just a lil spook) and she thought I fell

Also use cotton not nylon if you value and part of your hand. Learned that personally. If my rope wouldn’t have been cotton it would’ve been a lot more severe.

I held the rope like that a while ago but it was very loose so i thought i would have time to react if it spooked but when i got into the pasture and closed the gate my hand that was holding the lead rope had that ring and the horse spooked at the gate and i didn't notice so it pulled and my hand got stuck and i had to run a couple steps. After that i always hold it the right way haha my fingers and palm were bruised for 2 weeks.i'm glad it stopped quickly or i wouldve broken my hand 😅

Same thing when you hold the reins if you take them of the neck when u lead btw always hold the end of the reins so they point out from your grip and not your hand through the reins

Well, if you do that, that’s why I keep my hand down whenever I do that so I can just let go and I don’t do it that tight. I do it pretty big so in winter my horse boot nothing happened. Also, very sorry for the audio, correct

Such a simple tip but it's amazing how many instructors don't teach this to newcomers. I learned on accident, horse got spooked and me? Ended up on the ground. Luckily wasn't hurt, more embarrassed than anything.

This is how you should hold any rope under load... never wrap any rope around your hand unless the load is tiny.

Nylon leads like the one she's holding, are frowned upon as well. Leather and cotton are Recommended, especially for young or beginning equine handlers.

Okay but who the heck does coils that small anyway. I use coils like 90% of the time bc of habit, it's what I grew up with and was always taught and saw with others, and we only do like one or two large loops
