Working at heights poses significant risks, with falls being a major cause of fatal accidents. It is crucial to understand these risks and take necessary precautions. Even falls from small heights can lead to injuries. Adhere to your company's regulations and follow the appropriate procedures.
Common causes of accidents when working at heights include:
- Untrained workers
- Workers in poor health
- Exposure to electrical power
- Lack of or faulty harnesses and self-retracting lifelines
- Poor condition or outdated safety equipment
- Inadequate planning
- Failure to follow procedures
- Unauthorized work
- Falling objects
Keeping your work area tidy is essential, especially when working at heights. Misplaced objects can fall and cause accidents or obstruct pathways. Use strong safety barriers to prevent falls of people, machinery, or objects. Signal the lower-level work area to warn others of the risks. Protect your colleagues, and they will protect you. Avoid shortcuts that compromise safety.
When using scaffolding:
- Ensure it is in good condition, regularly maintained, and certified.
- Do not overload it or throw items from it.
- Avoid using makeshift scaffolding.
When using a harness:
- Follow your company's height requirements.
- Ensure all parts are in good condition and certified.
- Inspect the harness before each use and follow manufacturer instructions.
- Fasten the straps properly and use overhead anchor points to minimize impact in case of a fall.
When using ladders:
- Choose the right ladder and verify its condition.
- Ensure the ground is even before setting up.
- Do not use objects to level the ladder or extend its height by placing it on other elements.
- Signal and delimit the work area.
- Maintain three points of contact and stay centered to avoid overreaching.
Training is vital for those working at heights. A trained worker is a safe worker. Learn about work safety proactively, not through accidents.
