Nothing wrong with wanting to be accepted as who we are.. As long as we don't force it upon people. In Violoa's case.. i don't think she was asking for acceptance. She was asking for equality.

Viola Davis is an amazing talent and should be celebrated for that. However, as a Black person I can say that I think the time for Black people to stop seeking acceptance, validation, acknowledgement, or approval from predominately white run institutions is long overdue. The first Black woman to win an emmy in 2015 is not indicative of racial progress nor is it a cause for celebration but is a crying shame as it represents the delayed arrival of white approval. It shows how incredibly long white run institutions take to appreciate, acknowledge, and reward Black talent that has existed forever. Viola Davis, strong, bold, talented , and beautfiul, is worthy and deserving of any praise she receives, however she did not win because she is the first Black woman worthy of winning an emmy, she is merely the first one to be rewarded by the white an academy that has historically denied avenues of access to many other qualified Black actresses of yesteryear. Here's to Viola and the Black community shall lift her up with or without an academy.

lifestraight woops I misread, I was just so used to reading people saying it had nothing to do with her being black and that her speech shouldnt have been about it (braindead white privilege way of thinking). I think she nailed that speech, ¨You can´t win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there¨ is not the Emmys tho, it is the whole industry.
