“Only nation states can purchase ships.” Easy explanation: for this setting, you bought the sailboat equivalent of a Winnebago manned by fourth-rate sailors. “The harbor master wouldn’t allow such violence.” Easy, he’s corrupt. Or he’s so swamped with work that any fight with a body count in single digits is background noise to him. “But the crew wouldn’t allow a child to climb somewhere dangerous!” Easy explanation; you finally realize why your crew was so cheap to hire: they suck.

I think this is a misunderstanding of maritime law. Writer of the "But muh Realism..." The first few drafts were actually too long to post to Reddit and a bunch of stuff had to get scrapped in order to make a good story. Some of that was his actual argument against not trusting the party. Tl;dr: He was adoptive cousins with one of the Champions, Cassandra. Grew up near noble and well liked. His excuse? "I trust Cassandra, not the other Champions and not their Chosen." I tried to explain to him that it was STILL Cassandra telling him to get along with party and save the country, but he just excused that as "Still doesn't mean I **have** to do what she asks of me." He had a reason to listen. He just simply CHOSE not to, because he "didn't have to."

To be fair, "I don't know these guys" can work if played right. I'm playing a loner paladin right now, who's taken coins from a small bandit hideout and not shared with the party for that very reason. But I don't use it to entirely ignore the rest of the party. I've rather given my paladin, along with "I don't know these guys", a motivation to stick with the party despite his tendencies, and it makes him quite fun to play. Heck, there was even a moment where the group goes to the local inn for the night, and my character (we're still really early in the campaign) has already been in town a few days, and the innkeeper looks at him, sees the party and immediately declares, "You've finally found some friends, how wonderful!" And I got the joy of grumpily muttering about how they're not friends, just business associates, and how he's only doing so many good deeds around town with them because it pays the bills. Long story short, being distrustful toward the party can work, so long as you put in the effort and don't just run off immediately.

For the pirate story about "realism" I've always found it best that realism mainly stay true to environmental aspects and NPC Communities (towns, villages, etc). For example: For environmental, let's say you're party is in a combat scenario inside of a heavily wooded forest or a wooden structure and someone in the party casts a fire spell...realistically, that fire would most likely end up burning wildly creating a massive fire that in turn could cause massive consequences both in short and long term, so players would have to be very cautious when in these areas. Community realism would basically be the NPCs interacting with the party. If you break the law, than the guards will confront you. You cause trouble in a shop or tavern, you run the risk of being kicked out and barred from returning to that establishment. Things like this really make it more immersive for me and even more challenging as you can't just worry about your PC, party or the challenge in front of you, but rather you have to focus on the entire area around you as everything you do can and should play into effect.

On the "What Development" story. After hearing OP's story, my instinct is that Taberis never had any problem with Kalt being an asshole, he had a problem with OP writing/playing better character than him. The fact that Taberis starting having problems after Kalt's arc was being realized and not before is pretty strong evidence. Also that it was bleeding over into bad/hostile behavior OOC and behind OP's back. I've experienced players like this before who get deeply insecure and jealous of other player's RP skills and the depth and attention their characters get (if only from their own player) in comparison to their own. They begin to feel bad or frustrated by their own inability to make their characters as interesting and dynamic, but often don't know how to put it into words, or may not even realize that it's their own insecurity that is making them feel bad about the game and toward the other player's character. OP made a big deal to their group about explaining and apologizing for Kalt's bad behavior earlier, which made it an easy scape-goat for Taberis to latch on to, because OP had basically ALREADY apologized and set themself up to take fault, by showing so much concern. This also explains why the frustration and hostility was bleeding over so much and making a rift between Taberis and OP. Taberis's issues was that he felt inadequate in comparison to OP's character crafting skills, never because of anything Kalt did in the actual game.

My PvP rule is I will not allow any PVP including combat, and spells, any charisma skill, or attempts to Rob players of items UNLESS the player who is not the aggressor consents to the PVP and then my role as DM in the fight is as neutral interpreter of the will of the dice gods. The characters will is in their hands. Thankfully four of my players have been playing together for a year and we all clicked from day one. The fifth player who was new to our group responded with “thank god.” My reasoning for consent is I didn’t want to limit my players if they felt their stories were going that direction but I wanted to make sure that any beef that results in PVP was between the characters and not the players.
@Triggernyar Жыл бұрын
I once had a DM overreact to "PvP." My character wanted to slap another player character. Like, no intention to do damage, just like a "wtf is wrong with you" kind of slap. DM got really mad, and PvP wasn't even discussed beforehand. I don't remember much about how it went, there were some other things that went wrong with that campaign, some of which I've gone along with that, in the moment seemed fine, but really makes me wonder in hindsight. Those moments kind of drowned out the other one. Come to think of it, that DM also tried to do a lot of settling out of game arguments in game, but we were mostly able to talk him down from those.

About the first story: If that player "Wizard" is so stressed and overworked with his professional training at the moment... ask him if he wants to skip the Cyberpunk campaign and came back for the next one once he has again time for hobbies. He might even be grateful for it because it sounds like he needs what little free time he has to relax and sleep. If he can't find the time or energy to even make a character, then the game will become a chore for him and pestering him with questions doesn't help. The post writer mentions being new to GMing and being a perfectionist, so I understand where the attitude "I want my campaign to be super-complex and it must be PERFECT!" comes from. But dude, chill. I know your campaign is super-important to you, but your friend has other IRL priorities right now. If your friend is so stressed from work, he likely doesn't have the mental and physical energy when he comes home to devote to a complex campaign. He just want to be able to wind down and shut off his brain for a while.... not have morally complex decisions in a dystopian Cyberpunk world.

As for the "Jon Comedy" story: While it'S true that it's the job of the GM to make sure the players are having fun.... it's also the _players'_ responsibility to not be pains in the bum, because the GM also has a right to have fun! And if the players are constantly breaking the atmosphere and tone of the campaign that the GM spent their time on to design and run, the GM has the right to say, "Screw this". The GM is not the players' slave.

Absolutely love your Godfather skit!! Parts 1 & 2 are my favorite movies. They're my favorite Thanksgiving viewing, but I sadly didn't manage to stick to the tradition this year. To quote the Godfather himself though, you broke my heart!!! There's no need for our Great Rat King to jump on the 4e hate bandwagon. x) It's my personal favorite edition, and I'm about to *finally* launch my new 4e campaign set in Wildemount. 💜

The guy in the "boring" story needs to join a historical reenactment society, not play D&D.

Personally, I think using mind-altering spells on party members is a form of pvp. It threatens player agency and can be have even worse results then the barbarian punching another pc.

The Dr Jon Comedy story: As a DM, I have NEVER and would never tell a character "Hey, I figured out how to murder your character. You good, bro?" Like... Characters die, but not because I decided to kill them. That's not how DnD works.

I love these videos!! I am so glad to have found this channel. Again the little touches leaped out at me and I have to wonder: Where do you get the art for your computer screen? They are beautiful and I'd love to get that Boiling Isles one!

As far as I see it, personally: Any spells or effects used on a character, that takes control, agency, or otherwise influences how a character will react at the time, is considered PvP. Now there's soft PvP [Zone of Truth, Detect Thoughts, and yes, Calm Emotions] where it's just the effects of being within the Area of Effect of such spells. [And yes, in a way, spells like Fireball count, but are addressed differently] where they can be used in a hostile manner to: - Interrogate a player who may have something to hide [Like a deal with the DM] - Rob a player of an emotional send-off to a loved one who just got X before them. (Calm Emotions should be used when it's needed, not when someone is freaking out) - Or constantly trying to keep a specific player within the range of the AoE. Then there's hard PvP, where someone is directly going after a player with attack rolls, or otherwise specifically trying to undermine what that player is doing. This is where the more powerful mind-control spells come in, such as using Command or Modify Memory. PvP isn't just about dealing damage to another player, it's about affecting how that player's character behaves, or reacts to situations, or even refusing to help that player without a good reason. (Ex: The cleric who refuses to heal anyone who doesn't' worship their gods)

Okay, I ask people here to not spam me with stuff, but I may be the in the story talked about in 28:36 I just dont know if the DMs rewritting what happened or a very similar story (I mean, fire sorcerer isnt that uncommon, and a few other bits are generic enough)

This was years ago, pre covid, so I don't remember everything clearly but enough of it does line up So it might be, or might not I could go threw old reddit (It's how I remember finding said game ) and discord (where I remember playing it on, was a Pay to Play server, but the DM was running his free game on it) and double check stuff

Update: As it's been years since this, I don't know the OP's discord off the top of my head and mobile only goes so far (so no scrolling down your DM list)

My family played a game about 4 years ago that I really want to continue. My brother was running it. Our group is really strange. Like, my druid is more of a wizard, the ranger is more of a rogue, and the rogue is more like a bard.
