Finally an accurate video about the Scandinavian design aesthetic. Most channels just describe minimalism and call it Scandinavian.

#8 Cleanliness I recall my Danish grandmother when she came to visit us on the south side of Chicago on her hands and knees scrubbing clean the public sidewalk in front of our home! My mom yelled "Mor, no need, no need" but Mormor said it reflected on our family. And how right she was.

it would be interesting if you showed in some next interior video 5 to 10 images of Scandinavian-inspired rooms, and dissect the images as to why or how they are not Scandinavian, and what you would do to make them more authentic. Thanks -- I really enjoy your videos.

"Everything white." White is my favorite color and this is a dream come true. I like a simple, clean, organized space with serene colors. This is everything my husband hates and opposite my very colorful Mexican culture. 😅 Needless to say, this has been a source of contention while trying to decorate my home.

Very clear and informative video. I appreciate the sharing of culture and authenticity. Got me on “you don’t see people in Sweden in leggings, we use actual clothes”. 💀😭😅 As a Latina in all the curvy clichè aspects of it, I cannot, for the life of me, find pants in the USA that fit my body well. Leggings it is! But not the transparent ones, for the love of Christ! I like that Calvin Klein has some nice, social, thick material, professional looking leggings. I just got about 10 identical, 5 black, 5 grey. That will do it. 👌🏽😅

I think a lot of people use Japanese & Scandinavian mix (which I think is called Japandi) or Scandinavian style mixed with american farm, beach house or other styles which is why they often say Scandinavian inspired bc they are very aware of that part of the design

Laminate flooring comes from Scandinavia. In 1881, before laminate flooring ever existed, a company called Stensmölla Kemiska Tekniska Industri (the parent company to Pergo and Perstorp) began refining beech wood in Sweden. The process they used grew very popular. It's very popular in Scandinavian homes and was in all the guest homes we stayed in. I like hard wood better but Pergo and other Scandinavian brands of Laminate and vinyl are popular throughout Scandinavia so the look is very achievable. Keeping the décor simple and clean is more important.

Interesting! Although it comes from Sweden does not mean it is part of the ideal Scandi design, and unfortunately is it not a healthy choice for indoor climate or for the climate! :(
@bengt_axle

Scandinavians are the masters of laminate wood fabrication. The best example is the laminate wood cross country ski. It was a major innovation in that it allowed for a lightweight ski which maintained a precise camber, which is essential for a good ski. I do remember the skis of the 60-70s that were all wood, but composed of over 30 pieces of wood glued together. I still have one and it is amazing how 60 years later the glue is intact. I think there is also the IKEA Poäng chair which emblematic of this construction method.

True, I believe that came as a result of the high maintenance natural pine floors. I hae laminate floors in one of the houses I lived in, but changed it out for parquet flooring, as laminate floors feels cold on bare feet. 🙂

Interesting comparison of design aesthetic. We live in a Southern California beach city and."every" flat surface in our home is occupied with photos of family members and friends, small models of sail and power boats, drift wood art and ceramic shore bird figurines. No bare walls. Wall space is taken up by even more framed photo''s. We loo love your channel and I enjoy your videos!.

So true. I will add that a lot of our decor and furniture are handed down from generations before us. I think all Norwegian homes have a memorabilia, like a rosepainted trunk, a painting or even a diningroom set. Growing up I didnt think much of it, it was before the term Scandinavian style. I used to have those natural pine wooden floors, and have spent hours on my knees scrubbing the kitchen floor, to make it look blond and spotless. Today I have white oiled oak floors, so much easier to clean 🙂

Probably because she is actually from a Scandinavian country. Most videos i see on KZbin are Americans 'interpreting' the style but they dont actually live it. I lived in Finland for 10 years and returned to the UK, my house is a genuine Scandi Nordic interior.

I'm a English / British citizen, and I heard about someone building a Eco-Pad eco-friendly mansion house. If I had the money - I would build myself a Scandinavian house, and add some British features to it to make it look like I'm British, too. I think - my opinion - Scandinavian properties are the most attractive ones out there. So this video, has inspired me and given me loads of tips as how to create a lifestyle like a Scandinavian.

Because I've mentioned about building a Scandinavian exterior style house - if I had the money - to some people' and they asked me 'Why would you build a Scandinavian style house when you're British?' But when I told them my thoughts - they were speechless like they didn't know the truth about Scandinavian houses either. Exterior - Scandinavian style Interior - 50% Scandinavian / 50% English The person who built a Eco-Scandinavian mansion - their house is on a website, too (in full detail)!

I have a Scandi interior, I have blond furnishings, except from an old inherited beautiful book cabinet in mahogany with glass doors. It only makes the interior more interesting. Everyone can style their home Scandinavian, inspired from an Ikea catalogue. The personal touches comes from old furniture, before the 50-60s style Scandi furniture are inspired by. You can go more boho, or eclectic and still be Scandi

So as an Indian I am not achieving this look,😂 but thanks for the video, I was thinking of theme for my home. I may use some small elements. 1) Most houses use tiles, marbles as it hot in most places and they provide chill under your feet. 2) Very big windows in Cities - India has plenty of light. So maybe will stick to Indian arts and design which is gorgeous.

Interesting and easy follow. I LOVE this style, but find it a bit difficult to achieve. I'll focus on "no pattern" from now on. Do Scandinavian people hate IKEA?
@SagaJohanna
@SagaJohanna Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Good point, yes I do think it can be quite difficult to achieve especially if one doesn't already live in a Scandinavian looking house!! But bringing in natural materials such as light colored linen bedding and throws, and keeping focusing on "less noise" would be a great start! I think we quite like IKEA, at least most of us :) I think it is a love/hate relationship since we're not used to big malls, and going to IKEA was always a necessity as a child, but I remember my parents not liking the experience. These days I think older people especially think it is a bit too generic, and not of great quality. However, because of cost many people still choose it.

No. It’s quite difficult, you have to speak Swedish or be very specialized

Carpeting OVER hardwood floors should be a felony.... I once lived in an apartment where the landlord had done just that. Baffling decision imo. I was like....but why? What is even wrong with you? And he was just like...idk, carpet is fancy right?

I was never a fan of white walls & light wood until this trend took hold & people did some interesting things with it. I think minimalism is nice as you get older & don't have the energy or as much health to take extra care of all the extravagances. I grew up in a northern region as well & white walls everywhere got boring. I prefer the deeper, autumnal, cozy colors up north compared to the bright white. Bright white makes so much more sense in a southern region if you spend a lot of time going between indoors & outdoors because the sun is so much more intense & it can be jarring going from a dark interior to an extremely sunny area, so having ehite walls & light to medium wood tones makes a lot more sense - as well as throwing some color in there as well to let people know that you have a soul. ^^;

5:38 How is any of this "scandinavian"? All of our cultures had interior decoration with an incredible amount of patterns and wood carvings. From the vikings to carl Larsson to...idk...freaking the average red and white cottage with wall hangings.
@SagaJohanna
@SagaJohanna Жыл бұрын
Not sure what you mean? I say not using patterns and I explain it in details, so please watch again. The idea of Scandinavian design is a modern concept and has nothing to do with historic accuracy. For example, the modern Danish chairs are the opposite of the Viking chairs ;)

"Most Swedish homes did not have a bathroom until the 1970's" I take it Sweden used to be a fairly poor country, yes? Young people today would not know it, and maybe not middle aged people either, but older people would remember.

I live in an apartment in the USA. According to you I won't be able to achieve the true Scandinavian look and decorating because I don't have a well built Scandinavian home! You are biased my dear. I already know how to decorate in the Scandinavian way. I was raised in a household which followed many of the same traditions you describe as being "Scandinavian" The apartment I am living in now was built with as many green and organic materials as possible. Although I think you are trying to help other people live and achieve this way of life, maybe not come across as being "Judgemental" to others because you think they don't know.

In Canada I have been shocked at how much STUFF renters have including luxury items like televisions & all kinds of music, games etc. And pets! But for emergencies they don't have several months of rent set aside or dental money etc. And when they have to move...stuff ends up in the trash cus they can't even afford a moving company. And often leave behind sneaky damage from posters etc that they attached to the walls, doors. And filthy ovens, fridges etc. My mother always said "buy things ONCE & take care of them so that you can buy a nice well built home, & a cottage or little farm to DIY to make life worth living"
