I was going through a rough time in May 2020, where I felt like the world would end, and everybody I loved would be lost to me - that I would never get to see them. From living my dreams that I had dreamt for my whole life, my new life came crashing down and I felt like I was trapped in a prison much smaller than I was. SUMMERTIME DYING is a song for that feeling, an expression of despair and anxiety. At many points during the song, I would ask myself if this suffering was worth it and although I am not proud to admit it, writing music helped me escape that pit of depression and extremely dark thoughts that I had dug myself into.
The video, made by the very talented Raghav Rishi, would end up expressing a similar emotion. So many lives were destroyed, so many chances never taken, so many potentials quashed - it didn't feel right to feel good in 2020. We could have been celebrating life, doing random things, making light of reality, but instead, every day we would wake up and something worse had happened than the day before. The video memorialises this, in a flurry of images meant to document the lowest points of 2020, accompanied by a maddening guitar solo. It is all encapsulated by a few moments of bliss that we managed to steal over the last few weeks - my friends Jon-Ayden and Wayne showing off their impressive skills on wheels, myself strumming an unplugged electric guitar for no reason, all of us just being kids for once in 12 months.
With this song, all I want to say is that it's okay to be human, that it's okay to break your suffering with your naivety and that it's your right as thinking, breathing people to make the most of your lives, regardless of the circumstances surrounding it. However, it is also very important to remember the unnecessary suffering that humanity goes through on a daily basis. 2020 reared its ugly head, but ultimately, it was just paint peeling off years of structural oppression, government corruption and bureaucratic inefficiency. The references to "sins of the father", a biblical concept in popular culture which undercuts the fact that no child should be punished for the sins of their father, stand as an irony. The modern world was irreparably damaged by our ancestors, and we must face the consequences for it regardless of whether it is right or not. They did not know any better, and even if they did, their own hubris blinded them.
The fact still stands that we MUST face the consequences and we MUST build a better society. We have to take responsibility at this very moment and I just want everyone to feel that the power within them exists - that we can make meaningful change, if not in a blitz then with attrition, for there is no other alternative than to perish as a species.
