Excellent video, Heather! I always use the banding method. Growing up I was always 'on call' to help my dad 'castrate' lambs. (The feedlot cattle too). We used the Burdizzo for many years on the lambs to both castrate & dock them. But after the first time using a bander, Dad said he'd never go back!! Definitely better!! I've even used it on young bull calves, though it doesn't take long for a calf to get too big for that! Thank you for another great tutorial! God bless!

To answer your question the little green bands with the band stretcher is probably okay up to about 4-6 months old (no earlier than 8 weeks ideally), after that most bucks will have grown too large to fit.

I just got the little sister and brother to my first goats that are now almost a year old. My vet didn't want to castrate my buckling until he was beyond 8 weeks. I think we did it at 11. He said his sister wouldn't be able to get pregnant before then so it was fine. But, the little buckling I just got will be around his older sister who will now be able to get pregnant. These new babies are bottle babies just like my first ones were. Will I have to get my new one banded earlier?

It is. You'll get crap no matter what, people have grand opinions and really, 8 weeks is minimum. Older may be better but not all situations make that possible. Minimum standards are there for a reason. We have seen the boys "extend" at 8 weeks and that's all they need to breed.

I do have a question. Do the goats get ticks? In recent years I have been so surprised at finding ticks on my dogs during the winter months. Our Arctic Blast last month had me encouraged that at least the cold snap would kill off some of those unwanted pests. Then last week I found hatchling ticks crawling on my dogs! I grew up in this community and never remember finding a tick on my animals after a hard freeze. I have never heard you or anyone that has goats mention if ticks are an issue. Now, if you are raising goats for the commercial meat market you want to be thoughtful on whether to castrate or not. Goat is consumed by certain ethnic groups that will look at a whether as being blemished. They prefer their male goats to remain intact. I do intend to castrate at least one young buck to keep as a whether this year because I sold all my males last year with the exception of my breeding buck. Boy did I regret that decision! I will base the decision on if the male is a good breeding candidate or not, and his personality. I would prefer that he be of poor quality for breeding, but with a friendly personality.

Too young for that baby goat. It will interfere with his growth development. Disgusting and cruel !

It's definitely a very viable option for those that need to castrate. We also like the California Bander.

They are easily sold as pets with this procedure and their meat also tastes much better. This is a farm.

I'm doing it so he doesn't breed young females, and so his meat is sweet. Animal husbandry is what this is.

It has more than one purpose. Our intact bucks lifespan is 8 years because the stress if rut is hard on their body. Removing the testicles extends the lifespan of the animal if kept as a pet, they can live for 15 years. It keeps the meat palatable if they are to be eaten, and is a responsible part of breeding so animals are bred intentionally and at ages that are appropriate for their size and maturity. You can focus on whatever you want to to make the concept evil, but it's really an unavoidable part of good animal husbandry.

I want to point out too, that even veganism is full of pain and death for animals. We live next to big fields of corn And soy and the tractors do not care about the rabbit nests or baby deer in the field. The sprayers don't care about the fish in my pond or the bees on the flowers. We grow a lot of our own food and take immense pride in the fact that we take the hard parts of the task of living and eating literally into our own hands. You don't see the squashed rabbits that made the soy burger on your plate. I do. Arguably that's far more senseless than what I'm doing here.

I am in no way trying to offend you or prove you wrong . But I am a vegan and I don't promote animal husbandry economy but it is a lot of torture to the helpless animals . And the animal has not requested you to increase their lifespan by removing their organs what if someone would do that to us and without our wish prolong our lifespan , and they don't deserve the torture , the pain , vegetables , and fruits , all sorts of plants and leaves doesn't have a working nervous system or a spinal cord or any nerve tissues so they don't feel any pain at all after being cut , but that it is bare minimum a human can do to atleast survive because a human being deserves to survive . Coming to the pointers of irresponsible farming practices maybe done even by organic farmers which may disturb other life forms but that should be checked the local authorities, but it cannot be an excuse to the animal torture
