"You have heard that it was said , 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise for the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. For if you love those who love you what reward do you have? Do not even tac collectors do the same? If you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? Therefore you are to be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect." Matthew 5:43-48

"When I look at the work of other manga artists, sometimes the faces are well drawn, but the *hands* are not. To put it bluntly, if I were to choose among artists, I would choose them by how they draw their hands. Hands are the most expressive part of a character, after the face... You can fake a facial expression, but your hands will show how hard you work...If you show the character's life in their hands, you'll get a good result." - Makoto Yukimura

I noticed the chipped broken nails of thorfin, Einar, and even arnheid just shows what they go through everyday, even the masters favorite slave has rough hands. It's something i've never noticed before in any other anime/manga unless the hands are the focal point of the page/scene.

There's a moment in the manga that rly stands out to me. Two soldiers were captured by the jomsvikings to be executed. One of them starts questioning the point of life, wondering if there's anything more to it than war and battle(being a viking basically). Meanwhile, the other one cries and complains for not being able to die in battle, wishing to go to Valhalla to eat, drink and sleep with the valkyries until Ragnarok comes. Upon hearing all of this, the first guy responds,"But isn't that what we've always been doing?"

As a martial artist who trains with other martial artists, Vinland saga has changed my life for the better in so many ways. A true warrior must be capable of inflicting brutal acts of violence but only in defense of yourself and others. Never to satisfy one’s ego to prove superiority over others because you make enemies with people you do not know which leads to unnecessary conflict in life. The discipline to use kindness and understanding is real strength rather then trying to physically bend someone to your will because you do not learn anything from meaningless violence and only hurt yourself or die in the process. Thors and thorfinn are the ideal warriors people should aspire to be like and askeladd is a perfect example of a warrior helping the youth stay away from a path that will lead them no where in life and end up like him. Like Naruto and attack in titan, Vinland saga will change the world as well for the better.

“I have no enemies” I love how Thorfinn started as a child who was so hell bent on vengeance, and as the years went that hate never left his soul. I love that how Thorfinn craved the death of only one man but yet once Askeladd had died, he lost it all the way Thorfinn had hit the very _VERY_ bottom…he only moved upward. Although his road was paved with broken glass and blood Thorfinn at least tried his best to atone for everything he did; moving forward and stumbling along the way.

Thorfinn's journey is the reason I am the person I am today. I read Vinland amd Vagabond at the best possible time in my life I think. I was 19 and the influence they have had on my can't be overstated. They helped me create myself, my identity as a guy. I love Thorfinn and Musashi so much, I legit couldn't be here without them. Oh and also Guts. And that's just when I am talking about anime, there's so many good male role models without whom my life would be so different. God I love stories and how big of an effect they can have on people.

At 20:08 is EXACTLY what I love as well about this magnificent story. The thing I absolutely LOVE about Vinland Saga is how absolutely self aware the whole series is and constantly questions everything that’s happening around it. For every Ideology, political view, philosophy, way of thinking that's brought up in the story from each of the characters, they always get logically and rationally challenged back and this is most note worthy from Thorfinn. Every time Thorfinn WANTS to desperately hold on his notion of peace, believing that there is a peaceful world somewhere, or thinking that he has no enemies, his ideas IMMEDIATELY gets challenged from a situation or characters who argue back of the issues they have with his ideals or try to challenge him at it putting him in constant complex situations. He breaks his promise to never use violence again TWICE because he was put in extremely complex situations that required him to fight back in order to save and protect the people around him which he couldn’t stand still when they were in danger. I absolutely love the fact the story and author is VERY self-aware of these things so conflict and arise in interesting ways that make the most amount of sense. It's what Naruto TRIED to do but this actually succeeded just based on the fact that Thorfinn's ideals and wants might not come to life and fall under disaster but the fact that he's trying regardless of everything that's weighing against just to see if he do it is extremely noble because he shows that he knows that humans CANNOT keep in living society where everyone keeps on killing each other in the worst possible way.

My bet is that younger audiences can’t relate to “looking back on your past experiences”. When you’re a kid, everything moves at lightning pace. There’s no time to slow down and take it all in. School and classes are changing yearly, classmates come and go. It’s all a bit of a blur while it happens and it’s not until it’s all over the we look back on it. I feel like I enjoy this show more because I can understand the weight of those quiet moments of reflection. I understand the tone that the slower pace carries. And from the very first episodes, I knew that Thorfinn’s true journey was to become the man his father always wanted him to be.

I love the song choices. Campfire from FFXV is one of the most moving songs I love listening to and you placed it at a great part of the vid. I decided to watch your vid despite not wanting to watch Vinland Saga. An ex-lover kept pushing it and I see it's because he sees himself in Thorfinn because he was obsessed with fighting and hated himself. Him aside though, the conclusion resonated with my own sense of strength. I'm a short, petite, highly sensitive woman, so violence is an urge but not something I can rely on. I found a sense of respect for my compassion, empathy and love that I almost lost over the years.

There's a certain melancholic irony in knowing what Vinland is, and what actually happened there. War. War arrived in Vinland too. Viking settlement never lasted there. It never could have. 500 years after Vinland fell, more people would find Vinland, make it a place of unimaginable slavery and cruelty even to the proud Vikings at the behest of empire.

A few thoughts I had for people who see Thorfinn's philosophy as not applicable irl(there are some spoilers here!) Remember everything related to Thorfinn is to the extreme. Very few people would need to be so pacifistic, as they would not have his PTSD or Hild behind them. They can kill to defend themselves. Not to mention very few people would be followed by people like Garm, Thorkell or Jomvikings, they only followed Thorfinn because he is strong and strength attracts challenge. This imo is another important lesson of the whole series. His companions were left completely alone, in the whole manga pretty much. I don't think anyone of Thorfinn's crew has been attacked outside whenever Thorfinn was attacked. They are normal people they don't attract much conflict. So imo it will be much easier for normal people to follow Thorfinn's philosophy. Especially in the current world where little physical conflict is required to survive. Knowing enough self-defense to escape is more than enough for most people, there are very few people like Garm who will chase after them and constantly try to kill them over a number of days. And even in Thorfinn's world they don't really need his expertise at fighting when they have Hild and her brilliant mind which can create stuff like her crossbow. But they need Thorfinn's self control and morality, because with availability of weapons a problem presents itself, the more you arm yourself and the stronger anything or anyone becomes(person, community, village etc) the more conflict it or they will attract, even just by the virtue of having the means to escalate situations (let alone other factors like your strength making others uneasy among other reasons), you can see this in the latest chapters. When you have a sword in hand, it will want to quickly end problems with a slash and a weapon sometimes has a will of it's own. That's why the philosophy of no enemies and the mastery over your mind is so important. Seeing people as people and not enemies will reduce the likelihood of you escalating the violence of the situation. Its simple dont view people as enemies so you dont be the one to escalate situation and try to de-escalate whenever you safely can or else run. If none of those work, fight and try not to kill. Then if that doesn't work then kill.

Thorfinn is a great character and I’m so glad he found a great friend in Einar, something he’d been deprived of. There’s a lot to being a warrior, more than just physical prowess and I’m happy to see it being explored yet again in this. Also great reference by others about the details of their hands, the scars, calluses, broken and chipped nails all pointing to walking a hard life.

When I look back at Thorfinn, I recall much of my own life. The differences and the similarities. The choices we made. Much of me has the same ambitions as Thorfinn but that central aspect of hate is still there for me. My hate is limited to the reach of people who are very much alive and who I'd have to see everyday. I don't have the courage to forgive nor the strength to simply forget. What people see in my eyes and my words were someone who desired so much. That intensity is sometimes off-putting or endearing. I am still dealt that rage albeit reconstructed for something productive, but of course old habits die hard. As this rage continues, I can sense my time getting shorter and shorter as I strive to prevent such a thing from being given a reason to manifest as much as mine.

I feel like the people that hate on this show have never hit rock bottom themselves. I relate so much to thorfinns rage and single mindedness. I also relate to his journey of self reflection. Its only because thorfinn has seen the worst things life has to offer that he comes to understand what is beautiful about it. I have no enemies is the most powerful line I've ever heard in anime. The petty things people argue and fight over have no real meaning than creating suffering for others. Thorfinn has become an enlightened being.

Only someone who’s lived such a privileged life that he's never had to stand up for himself in the face of a threat would take Vinland Saga seriously. I can tell by the snobbery and the lack of rational arguments I see in every comment section that the fanbase consists of both kids who think that because they went to college they know everything about what life is all about, and slightly more self-aware individuals like yourself who’re rationalizing how being a coward is actually beneficial for the world. Every time you quote Throfinn’s “I have no enemies” you’re exposing yourselves in the most cringeworthy way. And I don’t use that word lightly.
@hornymonk23

Look it’s not that deep or new. Three decades ago Rurouni Kenshin had no enemies either but he understood that whenever he couldn’t protect the innocent without using lethal violence, his duty was to revert back to being a manslayer. He wasn’t preachy and didn’t walk around like an enlightened being because he was fully aware of the naivete of his decision but he made it regardless because it was the right thing to do. There are four different choices to this moral dilemma: 1. You become a noble warrior who fights when it’s necessary to preserve the peaceful lives of the innocent. (Like Kenshin) 2. You become a martyr who understands his pacifist ideals will bring about his demise, but uses his suffering and death to inspire change. Though for it to work it has to make sense in its context. (Like Gandhi or Jesus) 3. You run. It may be cowardly or smart depending on the situation, but you get to live another day. (Like most people would do) 4. You become so infatuated with your moral superiority that you passively let yourself be killed just to pat yourself on the back in the afterworld, even though your decision will bring more violence and death to the innocent than you could avoid by being passive. (Like Thors)

It certainly isn’t that complicated that you need to drag the show forever with nonsensical writing pretending that you’re doing such a deep exploration of this ancient moral dilemma. I'm sorry to tell you but this show didn't enlighten you, you're just in the phase where "I have no enemies" sounds so profound, but when your life or your loved one's are threatened and your survival instincts kick in, you'll wonder what made you think it was such a deep statement.

@@hornymonk23 I could say a lot to your comment, I could do like you did and just assume what another person's life is like based on a singular thing they said on a video I half ass watched just to argue with people. But I won't do that because I would like an ignorant fool. All I'll say is you have literally no idea who I am or what I've been through in life. So, since you want to call me privileged, all I'll say is this. I'm praying for your judgemental ass and if it ever came down to it, I know how to protect myself. It's taken me my whole life to realize everybody has their own demons. So even if I disagree with you on every fundamental level and it comes down to defending myself, I understand you are a product of your environment. You aren't my enemy for that you are just a misguided soul. I don't have hatred for anybody anymore because hate is a useless emotion that brings only pain for the person feeling it. I would rather seek understanding and the wisdom to correct the things I see that are making myself and my loved ones have more suffering than we or they should. You keep right on believing the world's out to get you see how far you get in life

@@hornymonk23 to your second comment I've never seen ruronai kenshin. Also I didn't say the show made me enlightened I said thorfinn has become enlightened. When I say I have no enemies is the most profound thing ive heard in anime its because I haven't watched every anime ever released and my statement is factual for me. It's crazy how you seem to know everything about me from one comment and yet everything you assumed about me is coming from a place of indifference, arrogance and ignorance. I'm glad you like some other show I've never seen now if you want to keep making judgements about me I'm done with this conversation. If you want to discuss philosophy I'm here for it

You're right, I don't know the first thing about you. What I've said applies more to the general VS fanbase based on the arguments I've seen online than you particularly. But still, I don't need to know you to know that anyone who thinks there's so much depth in VS philosophy hasn't got a lot of life experience, and probably doesn't have enough references of what good writing is, so when so many of you start saying it's a masterpiece and it's so profound, specially with how snobby the fanbase is (though not your case) you're gonna be called out. If you've never seen Kenshin I recommend it, it's a classic worth watching at least up until Shishio's arc (the third season is kind of weird). There's a remake currently airing. I wouldn't say it's a masterpiece but it gives a much better take on this pacifist theme than VS. The only interpretation of the phrase "I have no enemies" that has any real meaning is don't be a hater and don't use violence for no good reason. It's an important life lesson that a lot of people should to learn, but that's not what the show conveys (I don't think the author even knows what he's actually trying to say). But hey, maybe I missed something because the plot is so forgettable and I stopped watching when it became too ridiculous to bear. So if you want to explain to me what do you find so life changing of the "I have no enemies" philosophy, I'll hear you. @@jared30

Thorfinn lived a life of anger, vengeance, resentment, struggle, violence, etc. He suffered and lived in misery all for the sake of taking down the object of his suffering. When he was denied that and the older he became he came to the realization that the cycle of violence and hate wasn’t worth it. In the famous line he sums up the mentality he reached the older he became and that is: *I have no enemies.*

Let's not forget the only reason Askeladd killed Thors was because Flokie (sp?) paid him to do so. Askeladd even questioned or was curious as to why he wanted this hit out on Thors. He was just a middleman. Of course, Thorfinn didn't know this important info.

12:30 I had to learn a similar lesson once, when i was confronted with true violence. I grew up on martial art movies, I'm naturally gifted so I grew up dominating almost all my fights but i always had this internalized "code" i wasn't even conscious of. Never beat someone more than necessary etc. I guess i imitiated modern martial artists stupid ideas of honour in a fight but there's no honour in a fight, biting, never use your hands only any weaponable object around, going for a kill, that's how dangerous people fight. Now even if i can win a fight i just avoid it, if that's not possible I run. For your safety fighting is always a last result. Never let a girl cause you to fight, because when there done with you she's not gonna throw hands.

Vinland saga is a personal favourite for me. Ive always interpreted "the true battle" as the battle against ones self . Or our human urges. The battle of choosing to be good even when life gives you every reason to be bad. To create and love even when you are justified to hate and destroy. A battle against reality and the laws of nature itself

I just finished watching Vinland Saga last week and when I came across this video I would like to say it's perfect timing. Thors philosophy of what makes a true man gave me the confidence to be myself and not to choose violence in any situation. Vinland Saga is storytelling at it's best

Unlike Thorfinn, my revenge was successful. After all these years, I finally got my parents, specifically my father to say sorry to me. Even through all the hell I experienced, I still feel empty. There is still more work to be done. The damage I have caused is far too great to bear. My path to heaven is wrought with many obstacles and tasks. However, this goal is necessary to accomplish.

What saddens me is that all who have gained "the eyes of true warrior" had to first live a life spilling of blood or great loss, they were people in needed of redemption. But that is why the story exists, so we can be true warriors with out such tragedies. So we never forget that: we have no enemies. Heck this video made me tear up.

This video resonates with the kratos from god war video so much...like how they were both ruthless killer and now they dont want to fight, how they know the weight of a soul, one is trying to follow his father's footstep and the other is a father setting the road for his son.

Thorfinn in part 1 is a PERFECT example of an "anti-villain" character, while he's not pure evil person and not going out to commit evil actions like slaughtering innocents JUST for the sake of out of pure sadism or involve himself with rape for his own sick enjoyment, he's more than willing to COMMIT evil actions like killing ANYONE if it will further his own selfish personal goal of revenge. He's the furthest thing from a "good person" in part 1 and was completely desensitized to the evil around him and willing to allow it to happen as long as it doesn't get in the way with his own ambitions. That's what a brutal world like his causes to young boys who aren't guided well.

I loved this analysis. This show is becoming my favourite animated show (after avatar the last airbender). A lot of the themes this show revolves around such as honour culture, toxic masculinity, abuse of power and authority, the inner battle of choosing what you believe in and not necessarily what society deems good and not being tied down by ones lower desires like revenge are all still very real and relevant in our world today. It will be interesting to see where this story leads Thorfinn.

It's curious and impressive how Thorfinn understands what he needs to do to walk the path of a true warrior after witnessing three people who were important to him die, in their own way: his father Thors, his mentor and former sworn enemy Askeladd and one of his first friends (and I'd say best friends) Arnheid.

It's strange, but I see a lot of Zuko and Sokka in Thorfinn. Like the two Avatar characters, the warrior struggles with becoming a man, finding his honor, the horrors of war, looking for vengeance, the taxing anger, and so many conflicting emotions. Thorfinn is gonna carry that weight, all of it, forever. I actually learned this from Wonder Woman, but "Sometimes it takes more strength not to fight." Overall, just fantastic.

Watching Vinland Saga, plus your videos on it made me see parts of myself in Thorfinn and Askeladd. And I’ll save you some time, my worldview is more in line with Askeladd’s. While Thorfinn’s ideology and beliefs are noble, his pacifism and idealism (two qualities that his world and the real world love to punish) leaves him vulnerable to anyone who wants to take by force/destroy what they have, from vast empires to desperate bandits. Without some form of armed defense to back it up, his dream of Vinland will die before it’s ever born. Let me be clear, I’m not advocating the unchecked brutality that Askeladd and Thorfinn became known for. There’s enough of that in the world already, and compassion is needed more than ever. What I am saying is that violence and kindness each have their place. The true test is knowing when to use one versus the other. Askeladd may have been vengeful and cruel, but every choice he made (even his own death) served a greater purpose or goal, whether it was ensuring victory for his warband or protecting Canute from assassination and his homeland from war. To create meaningful, lasting change in both of these worlds, you have to at least be capable of violence. If you can’t protect yourself, how can you hope to defend what you care about or the people you love? I don’t see everyone around me as an enemy, but if someone directly chooses to come after me or anyone/anything I care about, I will always choose violence. No hesitation. No mercy.

I think it's important for protagonist to develop the perfect balance of developmental groth. Being relatable and not boring OP while also not being a little bitch. People that do that really well are Edward Elric, Eren Yeager, Ken Kaneki, Thorfinn Karsefni, Jonny Joestar and Guts.

There's nothing wrong with a character being a little bitch but going too far in that direction does alienate viewers. Simon and Amuro had an excellent balance but Shinji was a bit too much for many.

@@Ash_Wen-li i mean to be fair to shinji, kid was a 14 yr old with abandonment issues cuz his dad was a complete piece of shit. and the adults around him dont exactly put him in the best positions. Simon had Kamina as a supportive figure. Even after Kamina died, he had Nia and the rest of the squad. Shinji had....Asuka, Rei and Makoto....not the most supportive cast of people if I do say so myself.
