Sago Palm Plant Care & Growing Guide

I have This plant. One of my favorites. It was living inside of my house & I regretfully neglected it on watering & I thought it died out as the whole plant was completely brown. Well, I felt bad, & watered it to make myself feel better about it. Then, sat it outside for 3 weeks, in the rain & in the direct sunlight. Did not move the plant for 3 weeks- a month or more. Well, to my surprise, it finally came back & now it’s healthy as ever. I brought it back inside & I will never ever neglect my baby again after showing that amount of resilience ❤

Just bought one today. Will repot Soon. It's so beautiful but toxic pets and humans if swallowed. I have 2 guinea pigs and I keep them away by putting my palm into my room.

Please do not over-pot these plants, as is being shown: they prefer a tight pot and very little waterings to prevent root rot. The "pineapple" looking part stores water. You do NOT keep them "continuously moist" at any time of the year. Water when dry and even less in winter if not being kept under a grow light. If you will also notice, the soil in the original pot is sandy, which they also prefer, not "standard potting mix" which holds moisture too long. Use 50% perlite if using such a mix (even if the mix already has perlite in it) to allow for adequate drainage. The easiest way to kill these is over-potting and watering too frequently. Also watch for scale insects as they love this species.

thank you for the comment, can I ask if the leaves start to go a bit yellow near the "pineapple" is that a sign of overwatering or rot?? I think I need to get new soil for mine.

@@TrueGamingVault I’m wondering the same. I followed the instructions of letting it dry in between watering and to not over water yet not too long after I had it, some needles towards the base started to yellow and now they are completely dry.

@@seaglassmomma4040 my sago palm the leaves are starting to get yellow near the bottom and im getting worried i let it get dry and then water again afytr 8 days but I don't think it's working.... long story short i'm not sure how often to water it. the sago palm is 2 years old so still a baby

I recommend buying a moister meter and use it ti check if it is dry before watering.

Here in Alabama, they are planted in people's yards and both of mine live out doors. They even survived 20 degree weather this year.

I have a sago palm indoors, but it hasn’t been getting any sunlight the last couple weeks, as it’s been so dark and rainy. The branches are curling at the ends. What should I do?

I have one that is browning. I'm thinking of throwing it away since it's toxic, as I will babysit kids. I want to badly keep it, but it's not worth worrying whether or not the kids will be eating it.
