McCoy rules! The king of EPIC jazz. The guy is a genius. Love Sahara, don't know if it's a masterpiece...so many fantastic albums to choose from his amazing output: - Atlantis (the title track is a mindblowing epic) - Fly with the Wind (with the mighty Billy Cobham) - Focal Point (the beautiful Indo-Serenade) - Song of the New World - The Greeting - Horizon -Song for My Lady Tyner is the perfect gateway to jazz for a proghead or a fusionhead. Thanks for this great video Andy!

McCoy Tyner is one of my "late discoveries" in music (being one of those 60's childs "I do not like Jazz" when in fact I always did, it just had to be the right branch of it...). His output between 1968 and 1982 is a treasure chest to explore and Sahara and Horizon are the crown jewels. But all in all there is no bad album from that time. I grew up with the jazz fusion coming out of Miles/Zappa but Tyner followed a completely different road. He stayed (mostly) acoustic and instead fused African, classical, Eastern influences into his mix. His piano style talks to my rock 'n' roll heart, extremely powerful but still very subtle and nuanced, never boring. I had Mouzon's albums since the 1970s and I also knew and liked some Sonny Fortune albums from the 70s but I missed Sahara until about 2 or 3 years ago, the same time I finally started to explore and love Alice Coltrane as well.

A great album. One of my favourites. Trident is awesome too. I love the harpsichord playing on it.

I saw this quartet live. They were magnificent! I also loved freer stuff of Coltrane, Coleman, Taylor. Live, they were monsters, especially Tyner and Mouzon. Alice Coltrane was also amazing live, even without a drummer! Great job, Andy!

According to Alphonse Mouzon, Led Zeppelin came in 73' to see The Eleventh House, due to the friendship between Page and Coryell. After that concert Bonham became a keen listeringer of Mouzon. It went so far, that Bonham would practic to "Mind Transplant", becuase Mouzon's heavy playning. As he put it: "The loudest drummer in rock, would listen to the loudest drummer in jazz, which was myself".

Truly excellent album and first of his I bought on second hand vinyl about 35 years ago. Enlightenment and Atlantis are both live ones released afterwards with Mccoy Tyner : Piano Juni Booth : Bass Wilby Fletcher : Drums Guilherme Franco : Percussion Azar Lawrence : Tenor Saxophone, Soprano Saxophone both awesome too , especially the later.

The best thing about living close to NYC was going in every weekend and seeing and hearing some of the jazz greats up close, McCoy being one of them. One night at a club called Seventh Avenue South, my buddy met Cecil Taylor ( for trumpeter Lester Bowie show,) in the bathroom. My buddy said to him, "Wow. I feel I should bow to you." Cecil replied, "Uhh...not in the mens' room, okay?"

This album kicks ass... Two of my earliest Jazz LPs were TRIDENT (a trio with "Sir" Elvin Jones & Ron Carter) & FLY WITH THE WIND (larger band with Billy Cobham). Both killed me. Tyner is so powerful! Soon after, picked up FOCAL POINT & SAHARA.

Thanks Andy. Tyner had a great run in the 70's on Milestone. His music had a power and intensity that could match any of the plugged-in bands. Alphonse Mouzon doesn't seem to get the credit he deserves when you consider his CV. Weather Report, Tyner, Eleventh House, he played some truly astonishing music. No idea what any of this has to do with biscuits though?

I was just going to make the same point about Mouzon being the “forgotten man” of the great fusion drummers but I think, in part, this was due to the fact he moved to Europe and did more soul and funk based solo albums. Mindtransplant is of course his most famous fusion album, but sadly lacked the compositional quality of Cobham’s Spectrum, which he was effectively trying to compete with. He is stunning with Tyner though, as he was in Eleventh House, and let’s not forget his incredible sideman work, especially the awesome contribution on Al Di Meola’s Land of the Midnight Sun with the incomparable Jaco Pastorius🤘🏻
