I came to know about Sahir ji poetry when I was age 20. I was so impressed with his poetry that I memorized entire contents of his book: Sahir aur uski shayri. I liked his identity with society's downtrodden; women, poor, weak. His poem against kings and their musoleums, like againt Taj Mahal " meri mahboob kahin aur mila kar mujhse." became very popular in India. He was a groundbraeking poet.

It was in the late 80s that my life went through hell personal, social, psychological and financial. It so happened that I was having lunch with my colleagues. One of my colleagues would not part with his food. I snatched from him and said "Jahan sach na chale wahan jhoot sahi, jahan huq na mile wahan loot sahi" To this my boss, asked me do you know who's couplet is it. I replied Sahir's. The boss then said, you pensively listen to his songs and realize the meanings. You will never feel u r alone, and his poetry will give you strength. What a genius Sahir was and the boss's advice. I first heard about Sahir when one of my friends gave me a book translated from Urdu to Hindi, when i was in class 10...It was Talkhiyaan by Sahir ...and on very first page it was written something like "Ashko me jo paaya tha geeton me likha hai" and i got fascinated by this. Shayars would come and go but there will never be anyone like Sahir sahab. Sahir as his name suggests was truly a magician. I am really thankful to Rajesh Badal ji, Kewal Dheer sahab and Amar Verma sahab and all the seniors for their comments in this forum.

For years I was trying to find out how it is that being a mohammedan he has been using the words and ideas that are very specifially are those of guru garanth sahib . There are two lyricists that touch me soul - with different styles but great depth; one Sahir ji and the other Shailendra ji. What an intellectual Man ,and a peace seeker was Sahir. Advising that there is nothing in this world that cannot be settled by negotiation. War is not warranted at all. Be it our blood or some others blood spilled in the war, it is the blood of children of Adam. This should be an eye opener to the war Mongers to stop War Mongering. Also to the general public to stand up and so: Hell no we will not go to War. This should be the motto of the youth . So they do not loose their life and limb .
