ABOUT THE SONGS:
SAIGON ROCK & SOUL Vietnames Classic Tracks - 1968-1974
(From the LP Center cover)
01 - The Greatest Love: Love will be there until death.
02 - The Crazy Song: An anti-Viet Cong song. The VC promised to transfer money from the rich to the poor. This song speaks about being happy with what you already have, and how no amount of jewels in the world can buy real freedom.
03 - YOUR HAIR CLIP: Her soldier lover has sent a hair clip, which he fashioned for her out of shrapnel as a gift from the trenches.
04 - UNEVEN HAIR: She sang of a musician she once loved dearly, and how her life has changed as the result of an arranged marriage with a different man.
05 - THE SADNESS OF BEING A GIRL: “How can I hold onto my beloved? How bitter it is when things don’t work out. It’s better not to love, but to just keep things fresh, like in the beginning…only making love. I keep telling my heart not to miss, not to love, not to dreams. It’s so hard being a girl.”
06 - HEART AND TEARS: Love hurts but still exists.
07 - MAGICAL NIGHT: “If we can be together for one night, then we can love forever.”
08 - STARFISH: The story of a man forced to leave his young lover in order to fight in the war.
09 - THE BLACK SUN: “The sun is so black, black like our life. Life is like a homeless dog at night. Don’t trust or believe, or else you’ll be crushed and part with your hopes and dreams. The black sun is still the king of the dark shadows, of memories. I want to forget and wish away the sadness. The sun is black, black like the night. Why do I still see the sun as black as ink?”
10 - DAWN: “Tomorrow you leave to fight the war. This is the last night we have together, so let’s just enjoy it.”
11- FIREBALLS: Where he is, she will follow and be by his side. Fireballs reference the flares used to light the way for soldiers moving in the night.
12 - SAO LY’s LOVE STORY: A woman (Sao Ly) from the mountainous village of Sau Ri loves a man from a rival village of Cam Ray. As she sneaks away to see her lover by night, she is followed into the forest by a man from her own village who kills her with an arrow out of jealousy.
13 - OUR TREASURES: “True love uis like a treasure. We will always be happy, even though we are in poverty.”
14 - AUTUMN MEMORIES: She sings an ode to autumn in her beloved town of Da Lat.
15 - JEALOUSY: A woman is jealous that her soldier husband is away so often. “The life of a man has hundred of ways, but the fate 9of a girl has only one. When you’re away, you better not cheat, you hear me? Let’s make love for a long time. 15 days of leave go by so fast, leaving sadness behind.”
16 - A GIRL’s DESTINY: Feeling jealous that her soldier boyfriend has not come back to see her, she claims that his love fir the country is greater than his love for her.
17 - RIDDLES: A love song in riddle form. “Who is it that knows how many stalks of rice there are? How many curves a river has? How many clouds are in the sky? Who is the one who can sweep all leaves from the forest floor? The one who knows these answers is the one I will be with.”

Pardon my language but holy shit. Growing up Vietnamese American is a loaded upbringing because I love my family and am proud of my heritage but struggled to find my own modern connection. I thought Vietnamese music was just Paris by Night and bad pop. But hot damn, I’ve been hopping my head nonstop listening to this mix, thinking of my dad’s hippie, anarchist spirit. I am so grateful you uploaded this. I want to learn how to read Vietnamese again. I want to wear my ao dai to karaoke and belt one of these songs. Seriously, I think you just changed my life.

Good luck to you, I'm born British but have Libyan heritage from my Dad, wish I could speak Arabic sometimes to be able to better bond. I've also lived in Vietnam and travelled a lot of the country and have learnt Vietnamese at an intermediate level and would love to one day be fluent it's just comes down to, wants vs musts in life and commitment and what label we put our understanding of our identity. Being bilingual / multilingual is a really admirable, amazing thing though. :)

I’m a first generation American of Mexican decent (who loves the song at 37:00 haha) and it’s nice to know that we aren’t alone in having to fully embrace our culture as we get older and make it our own. It clicked with music for me too and I practiced my Spanish more by singing along. Congrats and good luck :’)

I think the style was more prevalent in Cambodia - but swapped over to VN. If you go to any community events with “old” people - that’s the music they play and dance to. Unfortunately, that can’t be said about Vietnamese cultural events...

Go for it! Language and culture are worth the effort. My wife and I dragged our kids to Japanese language class every Saturday for almost a decade. They hated it at the time, and we sometimes wondered if it was worth the effort. But now all four of us are glad we did it. BTW, I am not Vietnamese, or even Asian, but I LOVE this music too! How could anyone not love? It is just awesome!

You know what is even more horrific? That you're listening to people that were killed... most of these artists were killed when the North Vietnam took control of the South... because they were playing music from the enemies. But here's the miracle, even if those musicians and singers were executed, somehow their vinyls managed to survive stored somewhere... and thus they reached until today, and now we can listen to their voices and instruments here in KZbin. It's a miracle, a true miracle made by providence and the magic of music, and I can't help but cry. Thanks Vietnamese artists, for having made such wonderful music!!!

Not one of these artists were killed by the Vietnamese government. All but three are still alive today (all deceased artists lived out their natural lives) and a quick google search would show you that many of them play shows in Vietnam to this day. What an uneducated, stupid comment to leave on this video.

I’d caught this vibration of death breezing over the music I love. So, I blast it off my patio. Sound travels and never stops. So, I play it, play it, play it. I was gifted an ao dai hand made (for me) in Vietnam. I take care of it. I hope she and band got on a Huey instead, living out life long enough to find something good.

People don't go around banging Jim Crow over Americans' heads when they express appreciation for swing music or colonial imperialism over Europeans' heads when they do the same for classical, why do you think it's OK to do so with the Vietnam War to a Vietnamese person enjoying 60s/70s music from their country?

It's an opinion, so it's all about perspective. For somewhere like Brazil, of course things have improved, but for many developed countries things have gotten worse. There's more to life than listening to music on the internet. Also, just for arguments sake, right now in lockdown is far worse than things immediately prior to the outbreak of covid.
@LuckyXinRu
@LuckyXinRu 2 жыл бұрын
@@timothyspool1399 I doubt we can find anywhere in the world where you can say "this was better 50 years ago"... In all aspects of life quality. If we don't wanna look by music look by life expectancy, take USA for example: nowadays it's 85 years old, 50 years ago it was 63 years old... That's a huge improvement.
@romanr.301
@romanr.301 2 жыл бұрын
@@LuckyXinRu You are absolutely right. Also @Timothy, 50 years ago, the US had barely even abolished segregation. So clearly, 50 years ago, life was decisively NOT better for millions of people in the developed country of the US. And if things have gotten worse, it’s almost certainly because of poor, short-sighted decision making by people in power in the past that snowballed into the present, and not some vague issue of “morality” or “respectability” that so many romanticists of the past love to bitch and moan about. If by “things” getting worse, you mean that the minimum wage has not kept up with inflation, that housing has become a lot more expensive, and that education/healthcare (in the US at least) have become increasingly expensive, then yes, I agree with you. Things have indeed gotten worse in THOSE respects.

I live in City Heights in San Diego, where many of the people associated with the Republic of Vietnam ended up after the fall of Saigon in 1975. This is their music, I'm surprised I have not heard more of this here. Pure Viet vocals combined with rich psychedelic instrumentals worthy of Joplin or Hendrix, this music is really the Viet expression of psychedelic rock. Thanks for sharing this Chris! Yeah, it's a puzzle to me too why this kind of music was never broadcasted in the overseas, "boat people" Vietnamese generation, communities around the world. Perhaps, it reminds people of the war and its sufferings, or perhaps the anti-war period. I was 5 or 6 years old when I sometimes heard this music a few years before the fall of Saigon. I was too young to appreciate its brilliance then.

@XEREBRL there are many movies that were in the North Vietnamese perspective it’s just not popular unlike the western ones, what we need is a movie from the South Vietnamese perspective themselves, maybe the Laotian and Cambodian perspectives can be added

In November 26, 1970, the ROLLING STONE magazine in a two page article on the CBC Band, a band with a 13 y.o. drummer (playing #1 & &6 in this album) wrote "CBC is the best band in Vietnam, most of the Orient for that matter". The band was well known for doing cover songs (Jimi Hendrix, Grand Funk Railroad, Santana, etc...). Check out the sample of the CBC Band's 1971 studio recording, made for their American military fans in Saigon & surrounding area: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5ytiGpjf8p6ZrM Video of CBC playing some cover songs: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pousf3hvrr6NeZY They are still playing in Houston, Texas and in 2013 celebrated their 50th anniversary.

@@Marcjacobs97 I do, thank you for pointing that out. 😊 I suppose I got caught up in the idea that there is a third side that was pinned down by the other two (not to mention America, probably) and reflected my words on that. @@apolloptx Well it was certainly ahead of Saigon time. And they've never been allowed to make anything like this thanks to the communist north. But it is a good record of the south(and west) who fought and died for their right to make music like this.
