Pardon my language but holy shit. Growing up Vietnamese American is a loaded upbringing because I love my family and am proud of my heritage but struggled to find my own modern connection. I thought Vietnamese music was just Paris by Night and bad pop. But hot damn, I’ve been hopping my head nonstop listening to this mix, thinking of my dad’s hippie, anarchist spirit. I am so grateful you uploaded this. I want to learn how to read Vietnamese again. I want to wear my ao dai to karaoke and belt one of these songs. Seriously, I think you just changed my life.

I've also lived in Vietnam and travelled a lot of the country and have learnt Vietnamese at an intermediate level and would love to one day be fluent it's just comes down to, wants vs musts in life and commitment and what label we put our understanding of our identity. I’m a first generation American of Mexican decent (who loves the song at 37:00 haha) and it’s nice to know that we aren’t alone in having to fully embrace our culture as we get older and make it our own. It clicked with music for me too and I practiced my Spanish more by singing along. Congrats and good luck :’)

I think the style was more prevalent in Cambodia - but swapped over to VN. If you go to any community events with “old” people - that’s the music they play and dance to. Unfortunately, that can’t be said about Vietnamese cultural events...

Go for it! Language and culture are worth the effort. My wife and I dragged our kids to Japanese language class every Saturday for almost a decade. They hated it at the time, and we sometimes wondered if it was worth the effort. But now all four of us are glad we did it. BTW, I am not Vietnamese, or even Asian, but I LOVE this music too! It's an opinion, so it's all about perspective. For somewhere like Brazil, of course things have improved, but for many developed countries things have gotten worse. There's more to life than listening to music on the internet. Also, just for arguments sake, right now in lockdown is far worse than things immediately prior to the outbreak of covid.
@LuckyXinRu2 жыл бұрын
@@timothyspool1399 I doubt we can find anywhere in the world where you can say "this was better 50 years ago"... In all aspects of life quality. If we don't wanna look by music look by life expectancy, take USA for example: nowadays it's 85 years old, 50 years ago it was 63 years old... That's a huge improvement.
@romanr.3012 жыл бұрын
@@LuckyXinRu You are absolutely right. Also @Timothy, 50 years ago, the US had barely even abolished segregation. So clearly, 50 years ago, life was decisively NOT better for millions of people in the developed country of the US. And if things have gotten worse, it’s almost certainly because of poor, short-sighted decision making by people in power in the past that snowballed into the present, and not some vague issue of “morality” or “respectability” that so many romanticists of the past love to bitch and moan about. If by “things” getting worse, you mean that the minimum wage has not kept up with inflation, that housing has become a lot more expensive, and that education/healthcare (in the US at least) have become increasingly expensive, then yes, I agree with you. Things have indeed gotten worse in THOSE respects.

You know what is even more horrific? That you're listening to people that were killed... most of these artists were killed when the North Vietnam took control of the South... because they were playing music from the enemies. But here's the miracle, even if those musicians and singers were executed, somehow their vinyls managed to survive stored somewhere... and thus they reached until today, and now we can listen to their voices and instruments here in KZbin. It's a miracle, a true miracle made by providence and the magic of music, and I can't help but cry. Thanks Vietnamese artists, for having made such wonderful music!!!

Not one of these artists were killed by the Vietnamese government. All but three are still alive today (all deceased artists lived out their natural lives) and a quick google search would show you that many of them play shows in Vietnam to this day. What an uneducated, stupid comment to leave on this video.

why would you lie about something like this? literally none of the artists featured in this album were murdered after the south lost the war. most of them are still alive in their 70s and 80s now, and the few who have passed died of natural causes or medical conditions. their names are in the description, you can look them up yourself instead of spreading strange anti-Vietnamese propaganda.

Tóc Mai Sợi Vắn Sợi Dài Thuở ấy em vừa thôi kẹp tóc Thuở ấy anh vừa thôi học xong Yêu anh, yêu anh em làm thơ Yêu em, yêu em anh soạn nhạc Thuở ấy thơ còn non mùi sữa Thuở ấy tiếng đàn nghe vụng quá Cho nên không khoe nhau bài thơ Cho nên không khoe nhau bài nhạc Ở nhà mẹ dạy câu ca Mang ra cho nhau nghe nhé Ở nhà mẹ dạy câu ru Mang ra cho nhau ghi nhớ. A à ! A à ! Lan Huệ sầu ai Lan Huệ héo Lan Huệ sầu đời trong héo ngoài tươi. Đời sống trôi hoài không nghỉ ngơi Đời sống kéo dài cõi trần ai Con tim, con tim gieo ngàn nơi Anh yêu, anh yêu cũng nhiều rồi Lòng vẫn thương người em tuổi thơ Lòng vẫn nhớ tình duyên ngày xưa Bao nhiêu, bao nhiêu thiên Trường Ca Không qua, không qua câu Mẹ hò Ngày nào Mẹ dạy câu ca Đôi ta ru nhau trong gió Ngày rày đọc lại câu thơ Mưa rơi, mưa rơi trên má. A à ! Tóc mai sợi vắn sợi dài Lấy nhau chẳng đặng, thương hoài ngàn năm

@XEREBRL there are many movies that were in the North Vietnamese perspective it’s just not popular unlike the western ones, what we need is a movie from the South Vietnamese perspective themselves, maybe the Laotian and Cambodian perspectives can be added

Really? I left the day Saigon fell so I didn't know about this. Please share some of this same "kind of music" if you know of any. Thank you in advance. The only band I know that is still playing until now is the CBC band (song #1 & #6), in Houston, TX).

+Chris Tran Such music can destroy not only borders between people, but moreover real borders between nation!! We have had very rapid developement of psychedelic music, but all was cut off in 1968 year after invasion of russian troops in Czechoslovakia. It means vietnamese psychedelia is much more developed, like our underground half of 70's:-)

It was so underground though, because of the fear of being prosecuted, that it died off soon after. Artist like Elvis Phoung and were forced to switch up on the music they made in order to keep on going with their music careers. Elvis Phoung continued to be huge in Vietnam, but he never made rock/soul music again.
