The moment you realize that Uchiha could have actually won the war if they actually got to start it. They had been preparing and amassing their strength for YEARS. Fugaku Uchiha had even awakened his Mangekyou (which means he experienced some pretty emotional trauma stuff--- probably the dark side of hidden leaf village/injustice in that regard). Also notice how not even one of the elders in the council of elders is an uchiha.. given how they were one of the founding families they do deserve a spot in the council, this would facilitate a better communication with the higher powerups of the village as they would have a spokesperson. Given how they were isolated to a corner of village, we can already see how they were being treated. Fugaku Uchiha had grossly been underestimated in the series and nobody realizes it... Do u really believe that someone who is a father to two geniuses (itachi and sauske--- itachi is a genius, dont argue. Sasuke is too-- although he lacks behind itachi, he is nevertheless a genius), can Fugaku be considered mediocre? No. Having such excellent sons only means he is an excellent ninja himself with tremendous talent. (A lion does not beget a dog son). Since Fugaku *allowed* Itachi to kill him, we never get to see him in action and hence ppl often miss out on fact that the Uchiha led by Fugaku actually had the capability to turn and win the battle (they were at a point when they could be said to be completely prepared). And that's why danzo and rest were afraid (so was tobirama-- becoz after he died, he knew that there would be nobody to keep the uchiha in check, plus he knew his senju clan was diminishing whilst uchiha kept growing. In a way tobirama was correct.. the uchiha should have been expelled from the leaf). What Itachi and Shisui were doing is to prevent this war. They didn't think for the clan.. they thought for the village, even though they were uchihas themselves! They knew if this war happened lots of people would die and leaf village will be extremely weakened... If that happened, then other villages would take a shot at them when they are down. This was already precalculated by Itachi and Shisui... One might think Itachi was doing it under danzo's orders.. but Itachi was doing it for the betterment of the village.. there was no other option, the Uchihas were at a point where they could no longer be contained. There was another plan that shisui had proposed and that was putting the entire clan under his genjutsu, this would be to make them realize their wrongs/ to change their thinking and prevent the war. But he never got the chance to use this last resort (last resort becoz-- putting an entire clan under his Mangekyou's genjutsu ability pretty much means he is going to turn blind) as danzo poisoned and underhandedly tried to kill Shisui. And reason why Itachi didn't use shisui's eye to use that last resort-- 1. He couldn't as both eyes would be required. Or 2. Since the original wielder of the eyes was dead, the eyes could never be used to their full potential. With death of shisui, and loss of their last resort. Itachi knew drastic measures had to be taken. And that's why he launched his attack at night (when pretty much every1 had their guard down--- no matter how strong he was, he couldn't take them on at the same time, at that time). We can see the scene where before Itachi killed his parents, both his parents were seated and Itachi was right behind them with his blade. This means that he has already *talked* to them regarding the war and his decision to stop it, this is further reinforced with the words Fugaku says ".. so you have joined the other side". You can see Fugaku doesn't try to defend or kill Itachi... It was Fugaku and the Uchiha clan's dream to get back their rightful place and dignity, all this Fugaku sacrificed in the end and let his son kill him.. why u ask? Becoz just like how Itachi loves his younger brother, Fugaku actually loves his sons. Perhaps Fugaku knew that if he fought back with his mangekyou sharingan, even if he isn't able to kill itachi, he would be able to delay enough to get other warriors to come and assist him. But he doesn't do that... Ultimately he just sits there and let his son kill him becoz he can't bare to kill his own child.. (like how Itachi didn't kill sasuke, even though danzo told to get rid of all uchiha). But from the words of Fugaku we can learn that Itachi had never confronted him regarding his decision, which means it was on that faithful night when everything came to light... At that time, even in Fugaku wanted to do something, he couldn't as things had progressed far ahead/but mostly he would still side with his clan. He placed the clan above the village.(also admirable that Itachi's mom decided to die along with her husband and entrusted sasuke to Itachi becoz Itachi told them he was going to spare sasuke). In the end, I would say both father and son are not wrong in doing what they did. The son, Itachi-- thought of the village. The father-- thought for his clan and family. In today's world, everyone is mostly a Fugaku.. thinking of their family and clan. Gone are the days when one actually cared about how their neighbors are doing. It's mostly each man for himself now, that only cares for himself and family.
