Hey Mads, I think it would be wise for companies, who supply products that you could use on your restoration, hire you to do their testing and promotion because you do such a good and thorough job ! You and your viewers feedback could help improve their product and spread the word. Keep up the good work !

Why is this channel so good? I'm really enjoying it and am on a binge watching tear. If someone asked me to describe it I'd probably say it was the story of a mild mannered Dane slowly sanding all parts of an old boat up on blocks! Never the less I'm quite invested in this series and wait eagerly for each new development! Strange!

For the formica, I suggest you wipe them with whatever cleaning solvents you use, as well as bleach during your period of decision. Different coloring agents react differently to these solvents (especially bleach) and you may be surprised with the final outcome. ...unless you want to see perfectly clean but horribly yellowish formica within a year or two. Been there, seen it happen and this would be my best suggestion/two cents on the matter! And sail a bit! You have another boat and this is the only sailing channel on the web that we don't see the sea yet we continue to watch! :) Have a great weekend!

Hi Mads! I received a tip from my uncle for seasickness. He told me that putting a plaster over your bellybutton helps a lot. I don't remember if you've mentioned that you've tried that method but I do remember that you suffer from seasickness. A large plaster like the compeed foot plasters is supposed to be the easiest to use! :) best regards /Oliver

@txwallbedmurphybeds82868 жыл бұрын
+Sail Life do you need to use Formica? You can get sheets of metal and cut it to shape. Bend it over the edge with a mitered corner. Also consider the cleanup around the stove and hard to reach areas. A sheet of metal is by far superior. And you could add a rail along the edge. To contain plates. It also will not scorch or stain when you put hot pans on it.

Nice progress! Bear in mind that the led dim controller also uses some watts while even when the light is not on. Ive tested it on board our live aboard boat with an amp meter. Not a lot though. Btw, i would get other light switches than the one that came with the dimmer, Berker makes nice ones that get used a lot in boats and caravans. All it needs to be is a puls switch. Then you can also match the sockets. I think they are the model Integra. Greeting from out of Faaborg, Denmark :)

Hi Mads. I always enjoy watching your videos. I noticed that you were removing some silicone from your bulkhead. Hey Madds...great work so far. Regarding counter tops I would consider going for something like a dark grey with a pattern such as a stone effect. i say this because if you cut or chip laminate the underside is always a darker wood that shows up forever especially on a white countertop. ive dropped my EPIRB on my countertop, accidently slipped while chopping vegetables and ended up slicing the counter and also had some tools fall during rough seas that left dark dents. if your painting some of your trim white that should be bright enough. the darker laminate adds a classy touch and is more forgiving if you chip or cut the laminate.

I used round Ikea led cabinet lights in my ceiling after discarding the led driver. They even fit perfectly without modification, and cast a wonderful candlelight with excellent pattern and little glare. Cheap! For the counters I used the idea led light bars which fit under the cabinet ledge perfectly and flood the work surfaces with a fantastic even illumination. But its probably illegal to do this in Denmark, as opposed to the cowboy/pirate mentality prevailing in the US!

Hi Mads, I guess the only issue with the fridge will be slightly less efficiency. Since you're on shore power most of the times anyways don't bother. Thanks for the intro to signal k, didn't know it exists. I'm just waiting out a calm in sweden and am toying around with a beaglebone, nmea0183 ais, gps, wind, ... connecting it via wifi to my tablet and pc. Seems stuff is much more accessible after conversion, especially for folks who like json and NoSQL storage like mongodb... Cheers, Andi

First for me as well, had it in a box for a couple of years. Might be a sweet setup: beaglebone, grove cape and signal k. Both bonescript and one of the k servers are node.js . The groove ecosystem has plenty of nice sensors and display stuff. But as usual all the stuff drives me bonkers at the moment, I guess I'll resort to sailing tomorrow, gotta get home some day. At least the AIS thingy now communicates with my tablet....

Hi Mads I'm thinking the stove in front of the fridge might be a mistake. We have an ice box of similar shape and depth and there is a lot of leaning over, head down digging to get at things. even if the stove wasn't hot I think it would still be in the way. Maybe one day there will be a "crew" that isn't 6 foot that will have an even tougher time. Just my .02 euros. Good work on the teak. Rob

Hi, Rob :) My icebox won't be all that deep. So that your blade doesn't sink in the wood, all you have to do is lightly, sand a bevel in to the blade cutting the bottom of the teeth. In essence making the blade cut only from above, it will then glide over the surface without the usual need to dig in. Of course, keeping it oriented properly still is important, you can't cut too much a bevel in the teeth without eventually loosing them.
@SailLife8 жыл бұрын
Great tip! I'll give that a try! Thanks :)

I've seen those types of LED's on a CAT at a boat show and they looked great until some one with a GoPro filmed inside. They may "Flicker/Strobe" when filmed at 30fps so make sure ALL YOUR CAMERAS see the same "SOLID" warm white light. Another option you may not have thought about with LED is to go with a recessed RGB LED Strip. One 12V source at 2A can stretch out 2m and save you a lot of unnecessary wiring. The Pluss side to RGB is you can run the lights RED during crossings which wont mess up your night vision when transitioning between below and above deck at pitch black.
@SailLife8 жыл бұрын
I was only planning on testing the light with my GH4 but I'll be sure to check with the other cameras too :) I've got two of RGB LED strips aboard Obelix :) I'm considering using a couple aboard Athena too but I think that will be a project for next winter ;)

I'm all for the middle grey laminate. Reasons- white tends to stain very easily; the whites are a bit different as one has red undertones, one brown and one blue; if you choose one that clashes with your paint or wood tones then you are stuck with it. The middle grey has blue undertones which make it a cool neutral tone that should blend with your more modern style. Just my opinion. One concern with the reflex stove location I would only be concerned about access to the bottom of the fridge with the reflex stove on. Might get a little too hot on the bum but maybe the camera isn't showing the "real" space.
@SailLife8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion :) Once I'm done varnishing and painting I think I'll revisit the topic of laminate color before making the final decision. You seem like you're excellent at picking colors! :)Feel free to take a quick glimpse at all the available colors :) I'd love to hear if there are any other colors you think I should order a sample off :) Link to all colors: www.formica.com/da/dk/products/formica-collection-colors#swatchesTab Seared bum sounds horrible! ;) Reminds me of a story from a ski trip about 15 years ago. Bum vs sauna stove - not what I would call a fair fight. I think I'll make a mockup of the fridge and the stove using cardboard just to make sure. I'll see if I can get that in the next video :)
@Kimbercat988 жыл бұрын
+Sail Life wholly Molly what a selection. You chose good options. Unless there is another color that just calls to you I think your good to stay with the ones you have for now...at least until you finish some of the varnishing to see what tone it turned out to be. What's your favorite color and that will be the best guide. My guess is blue or gray.

Hi there Mads, it`s funny I am doing sanding now on my wash boards. Just had a thought, if you open all your cupboards and all hatches in side , then lock all out side air vet then put a heater in side tune it on for lets say 24 hrs , this way all the heat will go around the inside and may help to dry the fibreglass out, what do you think ?

Hey Mads!! Glad to see you're making progress! The boat is going to look awesome with the white interior with wood accents! I would usually not comment, but I wanted to pester you about your Reflux stove placement - Is this something that will be used at sea or only on the dock? If you're planing on using it at sea you may either look for a different, less exposed position for it, or to put some protective bars around it. We have a very similar heater on our family boat, and in a heavy sea, or when sailing it is the first thing you'd fall in to, or even grab when trying not to fall... I can tell you from first hand experience - OWWWWWWW! :)
@SailLife8 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much :) The ONE downside to the Refleks stove is that you can't use it when you're heeled over. I don't plan on using the stove while sailing :) I'll be adding some railing around the stove to keep Jökull and myself from accidently touching the stove :) Yikes! sounds like that hurt a lot! :S

Hi, Just today came across your videos and they are REALLY fantastic. It's clear you put a lot of effort into good quality. I'm in the process of buying my first boat. We have agreed on price and it's off to the survey in the spring (I live in Canada and it's December 27th). You have done a lot of scraping and sanding on and around the bulkheads. The bright work on my hopefully soon to be boat is not up to standard and I'd like to sand and revarnish. The bulkheads and other surfaces in the galley are plywood with teak veneer. Is there any veneer on your boat or is it all plywood?

Is there a frequency spec listed on that PWM unit? If not then hopefully an easy enough task to set up a test before actually installing anything. But I would suggest trying to rig a test with a complete load if at all possible. I got caught awhile back with one that 'worked just fine' for video lighting when I had a handful of the LEDs wired in. Got surprised when I wired up the entire bank we were planning to use and discovered that the unit self load balanced itself due to the higher power draw and dropped to a low frequency PWM on all the lights. And if the PWM fails, well there is always the good old fall back of "Just add lots of switches" and keep lights you don't strictly need off.

Two supporting reasons: 1. You won't need the Reflecks when you're cooking, the stove will warm you there. 2. It'll be nearer you and your guests and may not require as much fuel to keep you warm.

Push button latches are Awesome. The are clean modern & easy to install. Also if you adjust them right they don't rattle. Excellent choice. Now as far as the Formica you should go with white number 3. Just kidding. Fight the chicken shit and pick a color! Contrast with the cushions is usually good. greenish or bluish grays are usually safe and can be almost as "vague" as white......but that's just my opinion 😷⛵

Haha :P Number 3 is my favorite too ;) Thanks for the excellent feedback :)

Oh, I was also going to ask another question. You did a video on internet wifi extenders/adaptors a while back, but I'm not sure I ever saw a follow-up on the system you ended up going with/liking the best. What did you end up liking/going with, and how decent is the service on board Obelix?

Hi, I have question regarding your choice for heating solution. Have you consider anything else for your heat source than reflex stove? I think in your boat a airheater would be much better solution. (Webasto, Wallas, Safire etc.) Great videos! Keep up the good work!
@SailLife8 жыл бұрын
Thanks :) I'm glad you're enjoying the videos :) Forced air heaters are not a good choice for liveaboards. They are not designed to run continuously. If you ask any of the manufactures their forced air heaters are only under warranty for around 2500 hours of operation. That is not a lot considering I would run it around 4000 hours per year. Some of the other liveaboards here in the marina use forced air heaters. I wouldn't recommend it. They are however awesome if you don't need to run them continuously :) I would like to have a forced air heater aboard the boat for when I'm out sailing but for when in the marina or at anchor I'd much prefer a Refleks stove :)

Ok thanks for your reply. FYI Safire heaters have 2 year warranty. Reason why I brought up this subject was your heat spreading problem in Obelix. Which you by the way resolved nicely.

Another solid, informative and entertaining video...love em...Yerkle too! While you are waiting for the hull to dry, have you looked into using a copper anti foul paint? Just wondering your thoughts...keep up the great work...hope your feeling better!

Love the videos, big fan. Just became a Pateron donor for Sail Life because I enjoy your channel so much. Couple of questions on the iCommunicate interface for NMEA 2000 networks. I understand there is a lack of good apps to really take advantage of the data. what apps are you looking to use? Also can you provide an overview of your planned electronics set up. What manufacture are your considering for the sensors and why? Will you use MFD's or just go with handheld devices using the iCommunicate WiFi interface?
@SailLife8 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for the kind words and I'm honored you have chosen to help support the channel on patreon. I tip my hat to you, sir :) I must confess I haven't looked into what apps are available that utilize NMEA data from the iKommunicate. I got because I wanted to write my own apps ;) When I do the full review I'll be sure to look into what apps are available. I have a feeling there'll be a lot of apps published this winter when all the backers from Kickstarter are confined to their homes (can't go sailing). So far I really like Maretron but that is purely on spec - I have yet to test any of their devices. Also keep an eye on Yacht Devices (www.yachtd.com/). Again I haven't had a chance to play with their products yet but I'm very intrigued :) I'll most likely have a single MFD at the helm (with wifi access from down below) and lots of handhelds as backups :) Personally I'm looking at the Garmin 721 but that is mainly because I've always used Garmin :)

Thanks for the tip on the yachtd.com sight. It is going to be great to have more interfaces and ways to utilize the NMEA data. Quick question is the iKommunicate interface bi-directional? If so, potentially you could build some very cool apps that would have integrated tide & weather information for course planning that then is tied into the autopilot with consist monitoring for changes in conditions. Or intelligent alarms based on predictive analytics and AI. No limits here, it is a very exciting time for NMEA networks and apps are for sure the future. If manufacturers were smart they would be doing a lot of R&D on app tie ins rather then try to hard code features in their own instruments. The app developers will eat their lunch and people will look to buy only the sensors and use third party apps and devices for everything else. Can't wait to see what you do with the iKommunicate interface.

About colors. Maybe talk to Kika (Sailing Uma) and Liz (Followtheboat)? They seem to have done a lot of thinking re color themes..!

That is true and I admire their bold decisions but I think I also would be too chicken for something like that as I love the look of varnished fine wood.

You give us a close look into your life - sail life - and I follow your videos. In fact, I look very much forward to them. Thank you! But i've noticed a lack of anything female in these videos. Now what's a nice looking and cool headed guy like you doing without being hounded by a woman like the rest of us guys?
@SailLife8 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much :) I'm glad you enjoy the videos :) Ahh yes those elusive females! They're not easy to catch! It gets even more difficult when your not into the whole big-house-expensive-car thing but rather a more untraditional lifestyle. Add to that the fact that I plan on leaving Denmark in five years and have no plans to return. Somewhere out there will be a girl for me but I'm not holding my breath ;)

I totally thought you were going to do a door fridge there.
@SailLife8 жыл бұрын
Sadly I can't fit that for the stove but I don't mind a top loading fridge :)
@moejaime26548 жыл бұрын
I think top load fridges are much more efficient since the keep the cold in because the are top opening

Another great video May I ask, what software do you edit with?
@SaltyDougSailing8 жыл бұрын
Hey Mads, if you put the Refleks 66 where you're thinking, will it interfere with access to the fridge? You might burn yourself every time you reach for a beer! ;-)
@SailLife8 жыл бұрын
Small price to pay for a cold beer ;) I don't think it'll be an issue :) I plan on putting some stainless steel tubing around the stove to keep me (and Jökull) from burning myself. During the last 11 months, I've spent aboard Obelix I haven't burned myself once and I reach in over the stove twice a day (to get my toothbrush).

Hi Moe :) I'm allergic to grass but other than that nothing. I think it was something I picked up at work. Lots of my colleagues have been sick during the last two weeks. Good thing it's over! :)
