It's so refreshing watching one of the sail-oriented channels that is not only being filmed in real time, but where the protagonist not only reads the comments, but actually considers the proffered advice! Many of these channels are months behind, usually because "it's hard work getting the videos out!" Yes, it is, but it is the same hard work for what happened last week as it is for what happened four months ago. It's laughable reading the advice from concerned viewers for projects that are only a dim memory to the sailors. In short, nice job Mads!👌

Mads, one trick to catch the rust deposits is to make a sock out of nylon stocking and place it over the coolant outlet, then add the coolant hose. Later after a good run you can see exactly what has come out of the engine ,without any going back in .

Mads. Great video glad you have the isolation sorted. This will really help out a lot of folks who don't know about the saildrive/engine isolation. Your probably going to cover the anti syphon valve as you showed the tube to the exhaust gooseneck in your Vetus diagram. Its really, really important. Not having a functioning anti syphon can result in an engine full of water!!! Sea water. We have seen at least 3 boats where they were not aware of how it works or why it's necessary, and it ended in tears. Please keep giving good advice to the sailing community, sharing your experience and helping folks to live there dream with knowledge shared. Sail Safe mate. Ant, Cid & the pooch crew.

Hey Mads.....Don’t rush to get back in the water too fast. With COVID-19, all the borders closed, there is no place to go. As an owner of a Warrior 40, there is a weakness I discovered in the bow grp panels in the forward cabin. Wave action caused crazing to the gel coat on both sides of the bow along the line where the cupboards are fitted. I solved this issue with adding stringers to the inside to strengthen the panels to stop the flexing and repaired the gel coat So far so good after crossing to Atlantic twice and touring the med.

Mads, in your spare time ( 😉 ) you might want to think about putting labels on the diesel tank covers so you or somebody else doesn't have to trace hoses to figure out which port does what. Of course the engine ran. Physics says it had to.

Puzzled over the sail drive isolation but I think it must be needed due to the negative earth wiring on the engine block which have stray currents which potentially could interfere with the anode on the sail drive like an impressed current cathodic protection system as you see fitted to larger ships. Makes sense. Excellent work as usual Mads 👍

I suspect the channel will continue, just showing the sailing adventures of Mads, Ava & Athena instead of boat work. And then we'll all get to learn which of Mads' ideas worked, and which did not. I think there will be a number of changes he makes during the first year or two of sailing. A few (but only a few!) things he's done haven't been that well thought out, and I think they'll come back to bite him once he's gotten some experience.

My diesel heater is also connected to the main tank. If I was to re-do it. I would install a separate smaller tank for it. That then means you can run 'heating diesel' which is much cheaper. In some EU countries, heating diesel is tax free and dyed. There's usually a big fine if it's found in your main tank. The Belgians were catching British sailors out on this as Red diesel (used in farming) is allowed to be used in boats in the UK.

Mads - I've enjoyed every video. Here's a tip for bedding fasteners with only a single pair of arms and hands. You can thread the thickened epoxy you've used to isolate the core using a tap just like you would with a metal piece. Simply thread the fasteners through and there's plenty of holding power to add the nuts all at once from inside the boat.
@haydenwatson79874 жыл бұрын
Jason King, that would work for Poly sealant but not for the Butyl that Mads is using. You do not want to turn the screw because it balls up the butyl.

Mads, This is too late to save you from the Volvo tax on the formed hoses but it might help others. When I need to get a formed hose for my boat, I take the old one or a drawing of the sizes and shape then head to my local auto parts store. I tell them what I need and they let me prowl the auto hose rack and I have always been able to find what I need. I do not try to find a perfect hose, just one that has the correct geometry somewhere in the length. That short 90º is easy. You find any hose with a tight 90 somewhere in it with the correct diameter then cut it down to the correct length. I found one hose with multiple bends recently that was able to replace 3 hoses on my Universal including a transition in diameter.

when wiring/rewiring the mast- I strongly suggest that you run separate coax and separate antennas for your VHF and your AIS-- it's much simpler and less prone to problems than using the same antenna with a splitter-- just mount the AIS antenna on a spreader- the two should not be on the same plane. I enjoy your videos and your attention to detail. keep up the great work!

I agree! Good spreader lights are very useful, especially in high latitudes where we end up doing too much work after it gets dark. I installed Lunasea Lighting LED spreader lights Mfg# LLB-472W-21-10 which produce a ridiculous 1000 lumens each and are dimmable. They look very nice, have a low profile and the light is a fore/aft oval which lights up the whole deck without blinding your dock neighbors. I was out "racing" in 0 knots of wind at 3:00 am and used them to let a 600' ship know where I was after contacting him by radio. Made me really easy to spot!
