Great video Mads. Love your style of travel review and refreshing new destinations. On a completely different subject, I saw your Hydrovane in the shot at 12:00 and strongly recommend you add some additional triangular supports to your Hydrovane. The default factory mounting "pads" are not strong enough for millions of oscillations in a rough sea. Our previous owners lost their entire unit when it ripped right off the transom near New Caledonia somewhere. A replacement was installed with additional supports near the bottom mount. its since done well over 30,000nm without a problem. I only mention it because its one of our most important pieces of long-distance sailing gear, and ive heard similar horror stories from other sailors with the default installation. Losing it in a big sea would really suck.... PS - also carry a lot of spare pins for the hydrovane rudder and ALWAYS tie a rope around the rudder so that if the pin breaks catastophically (as they tend to do), then you dont lose your whole rudder... another common gotcha with the Hydrovanes!

Another great video, Mads, and well worth the extra week-long wait. I am also a subscriber to Drake's channel, but I enjoy yours more. (Don't tell Drake.) I can't wait to see more progress on Athena's deck. You do excellent work! Thanks to your channel (and some others), I am making active plans to adopt the cruising life in a few short years, as soon as I get my lort together. I'm in the process of buying my first sailboat now, with the intention of honing my sailing skills (and my DIY skill) until I can afford the live-aboard cruiser that I dream of. Thank you for your great work and dedication to the channel. It is my favorite, by far.

Excellent, as usual! I was wondering if your soggy deck core might be contributing to the elevated moisture levels in the hull. Could gravity be drawing the deck moisture downward? If so, you'll start to see your hull moisture levels plummet once the rotten, moist deck core is removed.
@SailLife
@SailLife 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! :) The hull isn't cored so it would be very difficult for moisture to travel down into the hull :)

Ah glad your back... I've watched a few of his vids and the one thing that put me off on him is his self proclaimed "real cruising life" title... but with his amount of cruising under sail... I guess I can give him that. I will give him another look and watch your interview. Almost bought a westsail 43 or 42.. not sure which. Hope Wilma loves her shawl.
@SailLife
@SailLife 7 жыл бұрын
That's funny :) The title was part of what drew me to Drakes channel. The videos they are publishing much more so reflect the cruising life I'll have. I'm not going to be knee high in topless women and booze. Sure that wouldn't suck but that's just not who I am :) So in that regard to me, Drakes videos are more "real" :)

For sure a lot of fake cruisers with just click bait on their channels. To each his own. Best channel by far imo is Sea Change, but these guys haven't been on you tube for a bit so.. and white spot pirates. Nike is a pretty amazing person. New channel , not for everyone, but check out Sailing La Brisa, retired couple refurbishing a baba 35 in mexico. I like it. Of course, Follow the boat is great too! And Delos. Amazing what they do with the camera. And when they have a problem, they don't just replace it, they get it fixed, often with some elbow grease. Sailing Uma... remarkable two young people that give a amazing insight into places I never wanted to go to, but now do. Christian Williams, on Why we sail... pretty great imo. Of course there are others. I have some time on my hands atm so I can watch and learn, and dream, and plan. So I will give Drake's channel another go... see what I am missing. Have a great week.

His title is what drew me in too. In fact, his was the first channel I ever watched when I decided to look for "Living aboard a sailboat" in my search bar. Then I found all kinds of other channels. including "Sail Life" and tons of others. Over the last few years I have subscribed to many of them and then deleted many of them also. But your channel and paragon are the two that I eagerly look forward to the most. This is like a nuclear summit of you tube for me.

Great vid! may I make a small suggestion? :) Perhaps you could experiment a bit with some hand-held video also in the videos when you are traveling or actually sailing. I think your fixed (try-pod) angle style is great and very clear for the DIY stuff, but in this video a few hand-held shots of you, walking, or some pans would make it a bit more dynamic to watch maybe. Just a thought :) Love your channel! Flo

Hi , I have not seen choice of foam talked about ( but not read all you comments, too many!) As you know foam comes in different density so I expect you are using an appropriate weight/density. (In old fashion numbers probably 6-8 pounds / cu ft for a deck) But I do not like seeing you using wood again for the centerline section. Remember 'wood will rot' it's the number 1 major problem we deal with on old boats! They make foam in special high density. Some are so strong they they are used in transoms of quality small boats with hi power outboards bolted to them. I would defiantly make sure you get some of this. Look for 20-40 pounds / cu ft same as hardwood is per cu ft. You should also take the time right now to put some of this high density foam in place of the regular core where you will be putting deck fittings like cleats,tracks and anything you will bolt down. This will stop the core crushing and causing the same problems later. So please do not use any wood. Cheers Warren

Mats, the question I am asking myself is: is there any special reason why you choose Athena to be the boat you will be cruising with? Is it because she has a lot of room inside, is it because she has an ideal underwatership for travelling or is it another reason? Greetings from Belgium, David
