I like the subtle effect of your eyes being hidden. Any time a character does this in movies or books, it always adds an extra layer of mystery to the scene. Maybe the real reason behind this is simply because you don't want your face fully out there, but I also love all the comments that talk about the possible lore behind hiding your eyes being hidden. In folklore they may wail and shriek if someone is approaching their likely death, which is what she is doing here! Furthering evidence is some say banshees come from a woman murdered, so it's possible the shadow took her life and now she attempts to warn others from sharing her fate.

"ALL HANDS!!!" The captain screamed above the thrashing the sea gave our vessel as a storm was brewing overhead. We sailors all piled onto deck and scrambled for the wildly flying ropes and moorings. I yelled as the skin on me hands tore open as I grabbed onto a bundle of wildly-swinging ropes, then with a roar, I pulled with the power of the God of the Sea and saw the majestic beauty we we're hunting as the sails turned back into place. A black hull appeared beside our ship, but as soon as it appeared before me eyes, it was gone. But the sea was our enemy here as a mass of dark silhouettes rose from under the waves stirred up by the storm. Each one moved like a serpent as they wrapped their shadowed forms around our hull and mast.
