As a non-sailor, it couldn’t sound more like you’re just making up words😂

LOL you’re probably right!!! The first level of sailing course is typically called “Competent Crew” and it’s mostly just the terminology so you know what the different parts of the boat are called!

LOL!!! I’d recommend taking a lesson and practicing just a wee bit before you head off over the horizon!

Even though I know the jargon and general concepts you're explaining, the zooming-in was worse than pointless; it turned a comprehensible diagram into just a bunch of random curves and arrows.

A compounding factor is the horizontal orientation required for shorts which reduces the available screen real estate by a sizeable amount!

If you lined the luff of the sails with the windex you'de be in irons

No not if the windex is outside of the “no go” zone that is about 30 degrees on either side of head to wind.

LOL you can thank the Brits for coming up with an entirely different language for sailing! When you take an introductory course like 'Competent Crew' much of the focus is simply on the terminology of sailing!

the windex literatly points to the wind. The luff is literatly the front of the sail. If the front of the sail goes straight into the wind...never mind why am I bothering

The sail is not a straight board and has curvature to it and the leach of the sail will “bend” the wind some 20-30 degrees from the angle of the luff. If the sheet had no tension on it you’re right the sail will just flop, but if the sail is trimmed properly you get nice laminar flow over both sides if you align the luff with the windex. If you are not aligning the luff with the windex you are probably stalling the sail somewhat.

Unfortunately the short video format chopped off 30% of the screen on either side so a bit hard to understand in this format!
