Best episode so far. Goes to show what a little luck and a lot of preparation and hard work can get you. Loved the shot at the end of you two hugging at the relief of your home being okay. The emotion is palpable.

Man, you could see the worry in your eyes the whole episode. I don't blame you, Satori is a nice boat and you defiantly get attached to your boat. Truly is like another love in your life. Great episode looking forward to the crossing! Kelly is the bomb! How can you focus on doing anything with her around. Good job guys!

I saw some boat tied up very similar to this. Hurricane Michael came and did not care about lines tied to docks. .. it just tore the docks and concrete pillars straight out. both of our marinas go destroyed.

Good video. Glad you were spared any damages. We went through the same prep and anticipation with our boat on Hilton Head Island, SC. The tidal surge was more our concern but we made it with a 1-1/2' to spare. Turns out that our town in central GA had a lot of trees down and we had one miss our house by just a few feet. Oh well, such is the life in the South during hurricane season.

You see so many folks who just cry and wring their hands about their crap being lost when they weren't the least bit concerned about being proactive about protecting their investment. Thanks for sharing. Great to hear your boat came through it so well. I'm over here in St. Augustine, did all the prep, and the docks got moved around because of the wind pushing on some tall power boats upwind of my boat. No real damage, just some fiberglass work. It looked a lot worse than it was thankfully. As you noted with your stern line, other boats can be a significant hazard no matter how much work one does. Good foresight thinking of it. I'll pay more attention to the boats around me next time.

A really good insight into what hurricanes are about. (Been there myself, St Martin in years past on my own boat). Once your own boat is prepared the big worry is flying debris and other boats breaking free. A big section of roof landed not far from me, I counted myself lucky. Thanks for posting.

So Nick, my question is would it make mor sense not to top off the fuel in the event the boat becomes submerged? Less environmental damage. I am just asking having never had a boat on the water during a storm. New to the channel but I have been binge watching all night.

Pros and Cons on both sides...we were of the mind that Satori would make it through the storm but perhaps we wouldn’t be able to get fuel for a long while. It was a gamble but we’re so happy it worked out 🙏🏻

Great video guys, well done! Doesn't your marina have potable water at the hose? I usually keep 5 gallon jug down below and then use a filter pitcher to give it one more filtering for drinking. Keeps from creating more plastic waste from those single use plastic bottles. So glad to see Satori essentially untouched!!!
@SailingSatori6 жыл бұрын
Certainly... we filled our tanks and a 5gal jug, as well as a few creative containers. But in the event we were unable to get back to Satori, we wanted a supply of bottled water in the van.

You guys thinking about taking the Cruiser Column this year? Grenada/Trinidad or Chesapeake/New England for summer and then cruising back for winter? Or are you guys job locked? Just wondering. I think in the future when we move on we'll do Chesapeake/NE for Summer since we have family up here and Summer in the Bahamas to VI area. Though I head some goto South America and don't venture north until the following year, I could do that too.
@SailingSatori6 жыл бұрын
Neither... we will be having an OTH “cruising plan update soon”, but we will be staying in the DR for the season. Luperon Harbor... probably the best hurricane hole in the Caribbean. We know of many cruisers heading south though... a very popular plan.
@daveg64926 жыл бұрын
Great vid. It always amazes me that some folks don’t take even minor precautions in preparation of a storm. Those boats with damage wouldn’t have any damage if the owners were responsible like Nic and Kelly. Your insurance company should be giving you a refund on some of that premium.

Hmmmmm.... did King Arthur have Merlin put a protection spell on the boat? My house in Orlando had more damage than your boat, a lot more. Trees falling everywhere, power out for a week, sweating our Chihuahuas off. Hooka brotha up next time Arturo. But seriously, you guys are doing great. I day-sailed out of St. Pete for years (and not long ago) before switching to Ft. Pierce. Maybe our paths crossed and maybe they will again but on a distant shore... and hopefully not riding out an Irma. Continued good fortune. Just keep being yourselves. Oh, kudos on the boat tour video too... super ship shape. High five.

I'm a North Dakota kid when I was a little kid. My dad worked in the oil fields. He got a job in a texASS field. We arrived in town just after he went to work. He had rented a mobile home for us. So he was at work no one knew we were there. Weather forecasting then wasn't good. They only knew a hurricane was coming in a few hours. But no one knew we were in the trailer when the park was evacuated. It was the monster hurrican where local reporter DAN RATHER became nationally famous for doing reports on the street during the hurricane. No one had done that before. It got him to the network. Well we were in a trailer in a trailer park my mom my 3year old brother and me age 2 what I remember was my mom held us on her lap all night and I knew she was scared the trailer shock and rocked all night. Meanwhile my dad was on a oil rig working the Derick hand refused to climb to the top of the rig during a hurricane and quit. The tool Pusher asked if anyone had experience as a Derrick hand. My dad 23ish at the time a known BULLSHIT artist told him he had 15 years experience. Anyway it was a promotion. While back in the trailer we were still shaking and rolling. When the storm was over my brother and i went to the door I couldn't reach the knob so he turned the knob and I pushed the door. It swung open. I remember it 5and a half decades later clear where all the mobile home that we're there before the storm. They were gone blown away all there was was a giant lake. That's my first hurricane story.

Next time dont hunt water, hunt for containers and purification tabs and load your own and get yourself a small purification system so you can treat any fresh water source at hand. If systems go down for an extended period of time you will be prepared. If you have the ability store some your goods on land close by, small gen. and fuel in case the boat is lost. Think like a prepper!

Just telling our story, that’s all. Would be strange to skip over the most stressful and traumatic experience since owning the boat. Yeah, we did a couple live updates during the storm for our concerned viewers, but we are not a breaking news channel. This is more of a “behind the scenes” video showing what it’s like to go through a hurricane with a boat in the crosshairs. A unique and valuable experience worth sharing with existing and future cruisers. It’s like watching a documentary of an event that happened years prior, even though you know the outcome. But I wouldn’t compare our trial with one of the deadliest storms in history to a football game, or an old newspaper. Regardless, Thanks for watching!
