I swear if the sails didn't look like used toilet paper I would use them so much more. I do remember my one of my first craft was a sail powered cargo airship, and I loved everything except the sails.

Sails don't really work like air blowing on the back to PUSH them unless you truly do have wind blowing that direction, so instead the best are more like a pressure difference from one side to the other, that's why it works the other way, more like a wing. This way you don't have to have wind blowing directly behind to PUSH but instead the "wing" "sail" gets PULLED "sucked" a direction. It's kind of weird when you think about it.

Square sails IRL don't allow for as high a speed because triangular sails work almost like a planes wing allowing them to go their fastest 90 degrees from the wind and that actually allows it to go faster than the wind. Square sails can only go downwind and can go a maximum speed of the wind. I have no idea if this is how it's modeled in FTD but that is how I believe it is IRL

Its been ages since I messed with sails, but yeah, the square ones are meant to go downwind as of when I last messed with them. The idea, based on some campaign craft, is to put them on rotatable masts to be able to use them at more angles.

You can absolutely beat to weather with square sails in real life. I've raced dipping lug rigs (some are more square than others) in the past, but it really sucks.

the thing with sails is that, like a prop or rocket, they actually only produce thrust in their primary 'forward' direction, throttled by the wind angle. That's why his 'square' sails didn't work well, they're two sails pushing into each other. you can make some funky aircraft using sails as wings because of this property.

Indeed. If you basically made a fighter that looked like a Star Wars V-wing (replacing the wing bits with sails) you could make a sort of TIE-like fighter. Might need to make it try to not roll of course.

Square sails and normal sails should be put on blocks so they can turn to the most effective wind angle. Share sails work differently than the triangle sails as well, as they are for downwind sailing

Set sailing AI behaviour for your AI to manage it. Manually you can assign the spinblock a couple of controls to do it manually. I think bread board could also manage it too.

So I'm about half way through the video, following along with my own vessel. And you see, I hear BorderWise say 'maybe add wings'. So I pause the video and begin adding things like Rudders, and then some Wings and Alerions. Well, now my sailboat is flying, and the fact it flies somewhat better than most planes I make is concerning. I have achieved a stable flight now. It's currently gaining altitude, at 240m, with a speed of around 25m/s. Send help.

Isn't there an AI additionall setting which controlls spinblocks if you have sails on them? It looks somewhat odd having the sails be completly immobile and you would think rotating them according to the wind would allow higher speeds and more controll

Question, how do you give your ships orders while in freecam? I’ve seen you do it often but haven’t found anything that could allow it.

Hit E to bring up the tactical view, set then them in fleet mode or patrol mode, click on them, and right click where you want them to go. 👍

Well this basically invalidates RTG's. Use some helium and sails and you can get a cargo craft far cheaper than an rtg craft of the same speed.

Pretty much, yeah. RTGs are still good for charging heartstones in Adventure Mode, though.
