so is sailing actually fun or bs? be honest. lol
@TheCornucopiaProject-bd5jkАй бұрын
You get the full spectrum of emotions from sailing. Lots of fun if you enjoy sailboat racing, aka dipping the toe rail into the water If you are at least a little bit competitive, because two boats going in the same direction is a race. Like a challenge, constantly adjusting sails either for speed or changing wind conditions Quite relaxing if everything is just perfect Scary when the weather deteriorates and conditions are not in your favor. Enjoy DIY? Because a boat always needs fixing something. Some people love it Some people hate it All people should try it out.

Very well put! Totally agree with all of that

Your DR courtesy flag is still upside down.. imagine sailing into the US at the moment in a foreign flagged boat with an upside down US flag🤔
@johnmcphee7004Ай бұрын
It looks like relatively decent sailing conditions. I wonder why you would not fill your tanks and have some spare fuel on board before you left. Now you are getting to make landfall and you are out of fuel!? I'm sure you will prepare better in the future which will save you a lot of stress. All the best.
@SailingAfterglowАй бұрын
They were decent in the beginning, just got bad the last 24 hours! We filled our tanks in Clarence Town but after that we were in uninhabited islands until the DR. Another issue we have is we don't have a working fuel gauge - still working on finding a process to avoid running out!

@@SailingAfterglowtrack engine hours. If you use 3/4 gallon per hour and carry 75 gallons, that’s 100 hours engine time.

Not smart to stay in the storm area during hurricane season. Much better to get out and go somewhere safer.
@PN_48Ай бұрын
In most cases - yes - but Luperon’s a prime summer destination for a reason…
@deerfootnzАй бұрын
@@PN_48 Luperon will not be safe in a storm. Firstly nowhere is safe in winds of 100+ knots, secondly everyone else will be there too, which means you are depending on all the other boat owners to have done all their storm preparation 100% correct. You are making a bet that no boats will drag their anchor into you or break a mooring line etc...
@PN_48Ай бұрын
@@deerfootnzAnd how many hurricanes have hit Luperon since recorde began? Zero. None. Zip. As for our friends who went North to the Chesapeake to avoid hurricanes? Loads of lightning and remnants of storms. And friends who we left behind in Grenada (also technically out of the zone)? Beryl. Hence, we’ll continue to happily (and safely) sit in Luperon for another sunny and pleasant summer season (along with plenty of other boats), and you do whatever works best.

@@PN_48 the great Don Street, who has sadly passed now used to recommend various hurricane holes in the Caribbean. He regularly stayed through hurricane season and his favourite hurricane hole was the Ensenada Honda on Culebra which had never been hit by a hurricane. In 1989 he weathered hurricane Hugo which sank 130 boats in that bay. He declared after that experience that there was no such thing as a safe hurricane hole in the eastern Caribbean as they were all to crowded and disaster was inevitable. Further, in my view any irresponsible moron who does try and go through the hurricane season and gets unlucky will then inevitably - I have seen it many times - leave the wreckage of their boat with its oil and diesel and rotting food and tons of plastics and lead and sometimes sewage and abdicate their responsibilities leaving the locals who generally are impoverished by comparison to pay for their thoughtless mess. I have arrived by plane twice into St Martin a couple of months after hurricanes to see hundreds of perhaps thousands of boats being bulldozed off the airport road and piled high, with crews working for years to pull all the wrecks out of the lagoon. In the hurricane season be responsible and sail to Florida or preferably further north of sail to Colombia or Panama. It's a week's sail, that's all. And yes it's harder to get back, but it's still only a short sail. Be responsible, be sensible and as Buddha said " try not to be a C*NT". Ok not Buddhas words exactly but close.
@PN_48Ай бұрын
@@deerfootnzFunny isn’t it, you advocate not being a “c*nt” and then start calling people “irresponsible morons” based on your opinion. Like I said - do as you see fit. I’m just glad with your mindset we won’t be seeing you in an anchorage any time soon👍
