I watch far too many sailing channels which either are in the Med or crossing over to the Caribbean or from the states to the Caribbean and to be honest it’s getting boring watching the same old places just different faces, so what a fantastic breath of fresh air YOUR CHANNEL IS. This is proper sailing with proper sailors.

Sophie, Cris, thank you for the glimpse at the clearance and beauty of the south. You are contributing another sight on the variety of seas. Reading your comment below I was thinking “No! Don’t keep it short!! I want to see more!” Although I know how much time editing films takes, please let us take part more in the daily life on board. Your sailing skills must be tremendous, letting us take part would not be considered bragging. Is this a Bestevaer you’re sailing? How could you afford such a boat at your age? How does the interior look (loved your excursion to the “fridge”). How much time do you spend on maintenance? How much condensation water does the temperature gap produce? So many questions...

Hello CK! Thank you for your very kind comment! We don’t own Pelagic Australis - that would be a dream if we did! We are employed as Skipper & Mate onboard. Skip Novak is the owner and our boss :)) She is a Tony Castro design and built in 2003 in Durban. Glad to hear you liked seeing the fridge! Initially we were not intending on making films and I only videoed to send footage back to my parents. But after my Dad edited the South Georgia film and we got such positive feedback we decided to produce some more from my slightly dodgy filming. With that in mind- most of my footage was of penguins and icebergs. Since the interest in the films we decided to document more on the sailing side of it too and hope that we can feature that more in future films:)) I hope that all makes sense! Any other feedback you can suggest we would gratefully appreciate it:) Many thanks again, Sophie 🙂🌊

You two are doing precisely the sort of cruising that I would love to do if my age and health permitted. Sadly that is not the case but I can certainly enjoy your experiences vicariously through yt. I really enjoyed the albatross ballet and would love to see any more if you have it! I remember David Attenborough also filmed the beautiful ritual some years ago but I can't remember where now except that it was on one of the Southern Ocean islands. I'm getting bored with the vacuous and seemingly endless supply of accounts of bumming around in the Caribbean without any sign of a purpose other than self-indulgence! But you two are actually facilitating important scientific research and that's both worthwhile and fascinating at the same time. Well done and keep on doing your good work!
@seasandsummits3 жыл бұрын
Hi David, I hope this reply reaches you (I’m not sure how to tag people in replies?). Thank you for your kind comment. Yes we do have a lot more of the albatross footage- we just didn’t want to overload it on this film. However! We are putting together short films on the specific animals we observed for the wildlife lovers :)) and the great thing about the albatross dancing was the incredible noise they made too! We have recordings of that :)) We hope to have those films out in the next couple of months. The film that is being edited at the moment is our voyage to Gough Island, where we took a team of scientists and conservationists as they embark on a year long programme to eradicated the house mice that have been decimating the albatross population (eating them alive). It was a really important journey- and incredibly we were granted permission to land there and see the albatross nesting! I can’t wait to share this video:)) let us know any feedback you may have once it’s out (in the next 2 weeks). Thank you again, Sophie 🙂 🌊

@@seasandsummitsYes, I received your most interesting message - thank you. You're doing exactly what I would love to do if I wasn't confined to a wheelchair! I'm not so interested in the stereotypical image of the yachtie just bumming around the Caribbean totally self-absorbed in pleasure seeking activities. If I had a live-aboard boat (if only!) I would definitely want to offer it for the kind of work that you're doing! How rewarding to do conservation and research work and esp. with those kind of people! I look forward to the next video about the albatross and getting rid of the mice!

@seasandsummits3 жыл бұрын
Hi John, Thank you so very much for your feedback. It is of great value to us. I’m glad to hear you think it has the right balance as we were a little worried about putting too much wildlife in. We haven’t filmed very much of ourselves talking into the camera as we focussed on landscapes and wildlife as well as sailing. But hopefully there was the right level of that too. What are your thoughts on the music? If you have any feedback on future films as they come out we would appreciate it again:) Many thanks again, Sophie :) 🌊

@@seasandsummits Thanks for your reply! The music is lovely and suits the atmosphere - sometimes adventure - sometimes peaceful. What a terrific way to continue from Part One! The sailing, scenery and wildlife footages were just incredible. I thought the calmness and tranquillity of Larsen Harbour was an amazing contrast to the breathtaking ocean passages, and yet Pelagic Australis seemed totally at home there. For me, the episode was all the more interesting because of the glimpses it offered of everyday life on board, above and below decks. Watching this (in the UK) has been utterly memorable. I really loved it and know I'll come back to it time and time again. A really professional job. Thanks so much!

Beautiful, as always. Really liked the bagpipe music (never thought I'd ever say that, ha ha just kidding, sort of).

Hello Delavan! Thank you! That made me laugh about the bagpipes! You are the first to mention them- I’m glad to hear you like it as so far the only feedback we’ve had about the bagpipes music was from my parents and they didn’t like it so much! (Which surprised me with my mums Scottish heritage! 😄). That scene in Larsen Harbour with the music is Chris’s favourite:)) Thank you again! Sophie 🌊

The bread maker would have to be the most popular person onboard :)
@seasandsummits3 жыл бұрын
Hahha! I would like to think that! But it turns out Chris’s curries are more popular with the majority 😄

Amazing adventure living the dream. What kind of boat is that, it must be very durable. Good luck in future.

Again stunning, i was interested to see how far the glacier had melted i thought you might have shown that, going from glacier to where it used to be on the old shoreline. Didn't look like there was much of it left. Do you ever take crew?? in a past life i crewed on anaconda 2 a hundred footer that was an old sydney to hobart race boat all around the Whitsundays taking english backpackers out to the reef for 3day trips did that for a few years. You guy's are fast becoming my number 1 sailing channel real sailing around the wild southern ocean and it's magnificent animals and islands, fair winds and following seas

Hello! It's great to have a message from a fellow sailor and it sounds like you have spent quite a bit of time on the water! We do sometimes take on a 3rd crew member- however, the coming season down in Antarctica is all on hold due to covid. Chris and I also work for other companies that take on crew too! Yes it was very hard to see that the glacier had restreated so much. We had the head of the Climate Change department at Maine University onboard, Paul Mayewski (he has a few books written about it). He was running the glaciology project onboard. Thank you for your comment and feedback:)) It is greatly appreciated! I hope you keep on sailing:) You have sailed in parts of the world I would love to experience! Sophie
