My initial idea to cycle through the Middle East to Africa became impossible with all the conflicts and Corona-related border closures. Then the only possibility to avoid flying to the African continent was to cross the Mediterranean sea by boat. I was lucky to get in contact with a Swedish sailor who was sailing from the south of Turkey to Egypt with his private yacht.
In Finike, south of Antalya, we fixed the bicycles on the back of the boat and left with a crew of 5 towards Egypt. The seas were rough and I got very seasick. So I was happy when we reached Port Said in the North of Egypt. Unfortunately though, we could not go ashore there and we continued down the Suez Canal to Hurghada. Sailing through the canal and the Red Sea was a lot calmer and enjoyable. It was my first time on a sailboat and an unforgettable experience.
