Stephane, I really enjoyed your comment about the effectiveness of the daggerboards. And, I would love a more detailed demonstration of how to utilize the daggerboards. Holly, I enjoy your typed edits on the screen. Great video!

I-65 is named because that’s the line of longitude you head to before turning south. I was very fortunate with a weather pattern off the Outer Banks that allowed me to do a hybrid of the two routes and made it from Fort Lauderdale to Tortola in 7 days on a 40’ cat. Awesome time!!!

I enjoy your style of videos and really enjoyed the technical run through of the equipment in this one. As a non sailing person who wants to get on the water it is both enjoyable and informative. :)

Thanks for letting us look over your shoulder!!!! Insane 9kn SOG Up wind and tacking in the salon😅. Great graphics and bow view letting us feel The pitch and yaw. Enjoy the "efficiency" of Stefan (years ago I should have used that term with my wife) and the conservative sailing of yourself Holly. That was the dynamic between myself and my wife. Unfortunate for me, she was right on some critical times I'm too ashamed to admit.😂

Thank you for sharing that. It takes both the gas and the breaks to safely drive a car!

Another great vid. Not sure if it is the filming or the edit, but you really capture the essence of the sailing. Totally forgot you were potentially still wanted for escaping on your trip north. Def best to stay legal, you never know when you may need to go back someday😂

Really like how you give us the fine details of what is involved in sailing. You make the educational fun.

Those upwind speeds are mad ! Stugeron is the best because it doesn’t make you drowsy like the other meds,thanks for another great update 😊

Nice video- thanks! Quick question about upwind at 5:20. When boat was 9-9.5 (which is awesome) I noticed the VMG was less than 6, presumably due to needing to tack upwind. If an important purpose of daggerboards is to prevent leeward slide do you monitor that somehow?
@SailingAWEN8 ай бұрын
We track it to determine if we are progressing. Different boats have different philosophies. Some people like to motor if you get better VMG going straight. We tend to prefer to sail if we can avoid the motors at all and only turn them on when we are basically standing still or the conditions are so bad you just want to get out of it as fast as you can- this was the case in leg 1 to get out of the Med. We chose to motor for a couple days because the wind was in the nose and the wave period was so short, our VMG would have been like one knot and we wanted to get out of there.

To me, this passage screams why a "performance catamaran". Awen performed very well! If you were still on your FP you would have jived even more. IMO Holly needs to trust Stephane a little more, if nothing else, so you sleep better. 😉😉💤💤🤣🤣 and generally be a little more "c'est la vie"

Yes, my appreciation for this boat skyrocketed after this trip! Also, we are both learning to trust each other, it's a process since it is our lives we are talking about so we don't take it lightly. H

It seems Holly has no confidence in her Captain and always second guesses him. As the first mate, learning to keep one's mouth shut can save a trip. And a marriage. If you can't trust your Captain, who's been incredibly correct and right on so far, it's time to swim home.

Were you scared Holly? I’m glad you are getting a break & rest❤

No, not scared. I was impressed with the boat. 😎

Jeeee-zzzzzus, Holly. Relax. He knows what he's doing. How about à little bit of trust in your chosen Captain, and less freaking out from the rookie second mate... Stephane deserved a chocolate medal for his infinite patience and calm composure.

The culture we have chosen to adopt on our boat is that this is a joint project together not a dictatorship. Holly is not a just a cook and passenger on this boat and needs to be able to continue to learn, grow and push her boundaries. Part of that is working through the differences in our risk tolerance and finding our shared happy medium. The example in this video illustrates the realities of a partnership and the work involved the first year in setting ourselves up for better and safer boat operation in any circumstance, which may include Stephane being incapacitated. The risk of taking a dictator approach is learned helplessness and a growing gap in skill. We have chosen a different approach, which may not be what others choose and to each his own.

No more pink with the new boat. Or downwind sails are now white and red.
