The use of ' that " here can be understood not only referring to Yeats' physical distance from his own country , but also to his psychological distance , i.e., how the poet feels psychologically distant about homeland. That mans , the country he loves is no good place for him and the like , but for the young only . It is the alienation and neglect he feels where the country no longer cares for him for he is now in the final chapter of his life . Many thanks for the interesting presentation you made.

@zahraataher90
@zahraataher90 3 жыл бұрын
Yes of course it means a branch in a tree, but when he said (set upon a golden bough) he meant standing on a golden bough of a tree, which leads us to conclude that he wishes to be a golden bird standing there since we all know that birds stand on boughs of trees and sing.

@@cadredeux1047 I think what is intended here is the idea of aging itself, the passing of time means we are getting older regardless of what age we think is middle age, old or very old.. you might be in your twenties and worry about getting thirty because you think you are starting to get older... even if you are a poet! aging here is regarded as a fact

@@zahraataher90 My original post was meant to be humorous. However I do some what disagree with your interpretation. My interest with this specific poem comes from Cormac McCarthy’s use of it in the title of the book “No Country for Old Men” and the Border Trilogy. So it’s through his eye’s I interpret his poem. I believe he uses the poem as a contrast and not as an explanation of the novel. Yeats talks about a detachment from nature. Those dying generations-at their song, The salmon-falls, the mackerel-crowded seas, Fish, flesh, or fowl, commend all summer long Whatever is begotten, born, and dies. CM embraces nature and his characters identify with it. ‘All the Pretty Horses” WBY escapes the natural world and withdraws into the imaginary world of Byzantium an idealistic world of Gods and myths. CM recognizing the connection to nature and shows the dark side along with the beauty. I can go on, but I will leave it up to you if you want continue this discussion.

@zahraataher90 Жыл бұрын
@@cadredeux1047 I agree with you on Yeats' detachment from nature, indeed I spoke in the video about Yeats' preference of the artificial (here it is the artistic creation) over what is natural because it lasts and does not go through the natural decay of the body. He wants to be taken out of the natural body and become a golden bird singing for Byzantine lords and emperors. I think it is a desire to be immortal in his artistic ability to sing what can be heard and aesthetically valued throughout ages, and a desire of a (materialistic) immortality as well, just like the relics of the ancients that are made of gold and are still preserved after centuries
