I've never sailed the ocean, other than on a Navy destroyer.😅 But I do sail a large, round lake in central MN, Mille Lacs. I've had to white knuckle it a few times. Once you learn to trust your boat, if you ever do, and assuming it is trustworthy, it gives you confidence, which to a large degree negates your fear of death. 😒

Love your work Sam, and always pray for your safe passages. Do me a huge favor and at least consider this for your personal safety.... rig your jacklines down the center of your deck from pulpit to mast and make your harness line short enough to keep you IN the boat's lifelines. If you get dumped and are dragging behind Pickle, there is probably very little chance that you will be able to overcome the drag resistance and pull yourself back onto the boat.

Speedy stitch is definitely a must have! I’ve almost completely re sewn a boat top before with one. My most important project was while moose hunting in Alaska, my sleeping bag wasn’t keeping me warm, so I made a sleeping bag liner out of a military surplus wool blanket and stayed warm the rest of the 17 day trip.
@mhub3576

Great episode. You should consider doing a quick "lessons learned" for how you diagnose problems and take steps to prevent them in the future. Like the mooring reel unspooling, how it happened and what steps you took to address it. The inflatable PFDs are very comfortable, convenient, and non-cumbersome. I personally try not to use one, and instead use the old-style that doesn't need to be inflated. The reason why is because the one-time I capsized a sailing dinghy the life jacket inflated, as it was designed to do, and then rode up under my armpits, and made swimming very difficult if not impossible. I assume they make them, but if you can get one with a strap that runs between your legs that will prevent it from riding up, that would be something to consider. Heck you could no doubt do the mod yourself rather than buy new. Regardless, its probably a good idea for everyone who uses the inflatable varity to put one on, manually inflate it, then jump off a dock and see how it is and whether it hampers you at all. Could save your life one day.

As far as I recall, you had the choice of several sub $10 000 30" grp boats around when you were looking. I know that I could easily handle a 30 footer so I would like to fly to family in LA and purchase a 30 footer for me to sail back to Richards Bay. I have family in Montreal and in London so, being retired, I have time on my hands to visit with them. I also have plenty of cash since I sold my flat a while back.
