When I saw the opening I thought you were in for a Mads style rip the whole deck off. So glad it was localised damaged and you were able to effect a tidy repair.

Funnily I thought you did this backwards, I would have preferred to attack it from below leaving the gel coat and top layer of glass fibre in place and getting to core via internal layer of glass fibre, then there would have been minimal intrusion on your gel coat and being inside you would have had the warmth of the boat to dry any glass fibre. It may have been more dusty, but that can be isolated

... Excellent!! .. nothing like learning hands on with experts on hand to show and guide .... worked in a fiberglass boat factory in the late 70s, was pretty skilled at gel coat repairs back then, have not touched since. Seem to remember that the hardest part was getting the colour match. White is not always the white you are looking for .. smilin .. bet Karlie would be good at that ... Surprises me the limited backing in spots where one would think there is a lot of strain, consequently slight movement to start with ... thx for the share team Cadoha .. as always .. never stop dreaming, just dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans ....

Dom that repair will certainly be as strong as the original. FYI for future you missed an opportunity to improve , the plywood is not a great compression member for such a high point loading, it would have been better to use some Fiberglass off cuts as core ( boat yards are full of discarded pieces of boats!) this would be similar to the usual replacing of core with solid epoxy. ( or just build up solid laminate). Also plain cabosil/thickener added to the epoxy has NO structural properties, it does not increase the strength of the epoxy compared to solid epoxy, milled glass fiber is a better strength additive. But in this repair it will not make a different , just common miss conception. (making it thicker to use does not make it stronger cured). Cheers Warren

I would thought you would need to taper the edge of the hole (at least 45°).. for better (wider) surface to the top layers etc.

I just subscribed! The KZbin sailing channel game is SATURATED at the moment. La Vagabonde, Delos, Wynns etc kicked things off all those years ago and now everyone wants a piece of the sailing life some channels are a lot better than others. After scrolling through hundreds of channels I came across yours. It's brilliant. Your story format, filming, music choice, drone footage, smiles on camera etc are a joy to watch. Thank you.

Cored Grp hulls and decks are always prone rot where you've got through hull fittings, no matter how much or how expensive the mastic some moisture always gets in eventually. I'd have thought high load areas like that would have been constructed with a solid core both to spread the load and prevent such issues, was that main sheet system a retro fit? Nice fix in any case. The only thing I'd have done differently would be to feather back the edge of the top layer of existing deck so the new glass had a good bond to it. But ask ten boat builders how to do a repair and you'll get ten different answers .

How come it all looks so easy when someone else does it. I did a similar repair on my boat, I taped up inside the boat to stop the resin simply falling through and filled the void from above. Great I thought, until I went below to have a butchers, and oh what a surprise, great globs of resin had pushed their way passed the tape and collected in a nice puddle on top of my dust sheet. Mental note to self, when placing dust sheet over cushions to protect from falling resin, use plastic sheets not fabric otherwise it leaks through sheet and ends up on cushion which then has to be thrown away.

This is why anyone intending to buy an older sailboat should first invest in a moisture meter, and learn how to use it. Before buying that boat, be aware of every area of elevated moisture, and commit to remediating each area as soon as possible. Because core rot is the slow cancer that will eventually destroy any boat, if not stopped.

Hi , fyi colloidal silica is not a filler it is a thickener, it actually only increases the viscosity of resin. It’s used in many other products too for same reason , ketchup, tooth paste etc . Some true fillers are mixed with ‘silica’ to thicken and fill the resin. See my other comment. Cheers Warren

@@CheersWarren Good to know mate. I just patched a hole in my dingy. I ended up cutting the a square of ply to shape, then used two cross sections of timber (they were wider than the width of ply) to hold the ply in place and flush against the hull. Then glued it with builder bog, glassed over it once I could remove the cross sections. In future should I be using the silica thickener as a glue rather than builders bog? hope that makes sense.

Looks like the rot was localised to the area around the fixing point, have you inspected the other areas where things are fixed thru the deck ? . On your previous video, putting the flue thru the deck , you sealed the edge of the core with epoxy, I’ve noticed on other channels when they do this sort of thing , they undercut the core with a bearing guided cutter, and then seal with thickened epoxy , just an observation 😉 Wishing you all the best for the new “off the grid” year 😃🍻🥂

If the bolts were put thru the cored area the compression load is too high for the core so over time it compresses, this leads to a failure of the sealant and then water get into the core. This then rots the core, depending on how well the balsa/wood is resin saturated. This is why the core should be replaced with a non compressible laminate or resin. Around the stove pipe there may only be light compression loads so sealing the balsa core may be acceptable. Failure to replace deck core in high compression penetrations is the cause of a lot of the rot in balsa core in so many boats. Cheers Warren

Hmm. Would have done it slightly different. I know, that´s what comments always say. However, putting a thin layer of unfilled epoxy on the grinded surface helps get a better bond, as the thinner resin can create a better mechanical bond in the grinded surface. Later the filled epoxy then creates a chemical bond with this first layer. Secondly: Why not leave a spot of pure epoxy without wood core where the D-Ring wille go? It will become leaky one day anyway. Was it drilled through pure epoxy , that would not be an issue.
