Harbor Freight sells some really nice (cheap) magnetic trays, when dealing with ferrous parts these are VERY nice and will hang onto small parts well. You can also stick the magnetic base to things so it won't slide around. :) Also, to help hold the keepers on the valve stem a glob of heavy grease works great!

So... the valve stem shims/Caps are all identical thicknesses ? You do not have to replace them onto the same valve they came off from ? Just asking :)

All the same, just keepers, they have nothing to do with positioning

@@SailingDauntless They do have some bearing on the valve clearances to some degree as there can be differences in ware and manufacture. But yes the value adjustment is not done with shims on the Volvo Penta D2-40 its done with a locking thread and nut on the rocker arm. You will have to use a feeler gauge on all valves on the reassemble now that they are jumbled up. Probably a good thing anyway.
