Fascinated by the stuck anchor. I got my anchor stuck at Colintraive on the Eastern Kyle of Bute, in similar circumstances, arriving in the dark. It was my second summer boating and I was under time pressure to get going. It took two hours and eventually I freed in by keeping constant pressure, slowly increasing. The the bow went down towards the water….but suddenly it released and the bow sprung a way up into the air! Was fascinated by your ring! Loved the camera work, looking up at the tops of the trees. And the Blue Caves! Thank you, ⛵️

I think I’ve just gotta hate you both, but only because of weather. Let me explain. I bought a 38’ yacht back in April. The weather was kind & I spent the summer sailing with my sons, my grandkids, my good lady & even friends. With all that experience under my belt September felt like a good time to go solo here on the west coast of Scotland. Then October Etc etc etc. Since then it’s been pants, capped off by today. I arrived in Largs last nite to utter calm & the promise of 9-18kts of breeze on & off throughout the day. I slept well after preparing “Liv of Nyhavn” for 2 good days. 05:30 brought stiff breezes, 06:40 brought 35kts of wind, bettered by 08:30 when the whirligig at the top of my mast became a blur while registering 40kts. Having done all the jobs I can between sideways rain I popped down below for tea & a biscuit & the final nail in my coffin - you guys straddling your stern, basking in sunlight. Give me a break 🤭 On second thoughts, thank you - I’m sure I’ll feel better tomorrow. Cheers for listening. Really love the vids. JohnL

What you missed, is when you leave the cave heading back towards Mamula, the cliff formations to Starboard look exactly like rocky giant faces, that protect the caves. I think there are three of them in line. If you are still in Kotor Bay I will keep an eye open for you. Happy Sailing.

If the anchor ring hadn’t worked I would have done that next. It’s a little deep for me to be honest, but using the chain to go up & down slowly I would have given it a go to at least know what was holding it and advise a proper dive team what they were up against If I couldn’t budge it.

I have in the past had a spare rope attached to the crown of the anchor, and run so as to lay alongside the anchor rope or chain i.e. as a sort of "twin". If the anchor is stuck, the anchor line can be slackened off, and the anchor can often be pulled out by the crown with the rope, either on the capstan or by hand. If necessary, the rope can be attached to a buff, the anchor rope slackened, and the vessel steamed up to pick up the buff, which changes the pulling angle. It's worked for me on any anchor which can have a line attached to the crown.

Yes extra lines and trip buoys are another way, but they are a easy to tangle and can be more trouble than they’re worth I’ve found
@waterboy89992 жыл бұрын
@@svfairisle like many things but proper deployment is the way to do it, I always use my tripping line, what I like most is knowing where the anchor is and much less chance of someone dropping theirs on top.
@svfairisle2 жыл бұрын
@@waterboy8999 Well all I can say is you're probably sailing somewhere sensible with good sailors. Try that in the Med when the charter fleets are out and they'll be coming along with a boat hook pulling you anchor buoy up thinking it's a mooring buoy! Make's no difference if you write 'do not lift' all over it and have big crosses on there either!
@waterboy89992 жыл бұрын

Nice video interesting the use of the Anchor Ring, learn something every time... Q, Why did you not use the sub to find out why the anchor was stuck hard?
@svfairisle2 жыл бұрын
We actually did use the sub, the video was getting long so we didn’t show it. We couldn’t get a clear shot though as the run off sediment in the fjord makes the water a bit murky and at 17m it was difficult to see. I could get the sub down and see the bottom but it was difficult to find the anchor and I was worried about wrapping the subs cable around the chain and getting that stuck down there too. I tried following the chain down but it’s quite trick, kept managing it to about 15m then overshooting the chain (turning risked wrapping the cable around it) Thinking about it what I should have done is have a loop of line tied to the sub and put that around the chain to guide me down. I could even use the bait release on the sub to let go the line once I was down there and wanted to come back up.
@SailingYachtSaltyLass2 жыл бұрын
Interesting "ring thing". We use a tripping line on a float for anchorages that are reported to have foul bottoms or rock. Was that one marked as rocky in the charts or pilotage? The blue caves looked lovely and I can only imagine that in real life they looked even better.
@svfairisle2 жыл бұрын
No we were just very unlucky I think, whole bottom charted as mud. You’re okay with the trip buoy where you are, in the Med the charter fleets pick them up thinking they’re mooring buoys no matter what you write on them!

@svfairisle Жыл бұрын
Just a roll of rode. Fair Isle was set up for high latitude sailing & often tied fore and aft into fjords. We keep it because it’s always useful to have a good length of rode and the only way to keep it and be able to instantly use it is to have it on a roll

The tip of the Ultra anchor looks bent. This will seriously effect the performance.
@ultramarine99422 жыл бұрын
Hello John, the tip of the anchor is not bent but curved and it actually improves the quality of anchor fast setting :)
@svfairisle2 жыл бұрын
If you have a look at the 'Which Anchor' video we made a couple of years ago you'll see a close up of the tip of the anchor. It quite cleverly has a downward bend at the tip which is also lead weighted so it's always the first point of contact and helps the anchor dig in really quickly. You'ld have to really go some to bend the Ultra I think, of course it's always possible if you start bulldozering it around with a 26 ton boat, that's a lot of inertia to stop suddenly which is why we did thing slowly and then just applied pressure, never yank! The tech expert at Ketten Welder (the people who make our chain) tells a story of a very big motor boat who got his Ultra anchor stuck and decided to use the weight of the boat (30 tons) to yank it out, he ended up ripping the bow off the front of the boat! Anchor & chain were fine!!
